Is Sapphire Isabella a bad name?

I'm having a girl. My husband and I both decided on and absolutely love the name Sapphire Isabella. When he told his parents they said 'You are naming it after a rock..?' They didn't sound very pleased. I have plenty of friends and family who love it - very few don't like it. I do not plan on changing the name. I just wanted some other outside opinions. Thank you.

  • Pretty trashy, yep.

  • Sorry, not a fan of Sapphire at all
  • I actually knew a Sapphire growing up. She now goes by her middle name, Mary. Nicknames and taunts ranges from Sappy ("hey, you gonna cry, Sappy Sap Sap??") to Syphilis. Kids can be cruel. Just some food for thought.
  • I don't really mind Sapphire, but something about Sapphire Isabella sounds over the top to me. I think if you went with a very simple middle name, it might balance Sapphire out a little better. I'd rather see Sapphire used as a name than Neveah or other "made up" names that aren't even words.

  • I don't mind Sapphire, but am not a fan of it paired with Isabella.

One of my favorite bands, The Hold Steady, have a character named Sapphire that they reference in a few in their songs, so I have always thought it was kind of coo.

  • Think it depends. I'm a business professional in a large city. A name like that might be a bit challenging on the initial uptake in my field. However, downtown in the art district and in that community, the name would work and might even be a benefit since it's a bit more memorable.
  • I do not think that the name Sapphire passes the resume test.
  • So, there was an anime this past season that had a character named Sapphire. Since it wasn't a magical girl show, said character was embarrassed by her name and asked people to call her Midori instead.

While life isn't an anime, I foresee your daughter asking to go by "Isabella".
  • I don't think people close to you are going to be particularly honest, especially if they know you're set on it. Sapphire screams stripper. There's no way I can imagine a 30 yo Sapphire in a traditional professional environment being taken seriously and it is a fact that names matter in the workplace.

I think your best bet is to switch them around if you must use Sapphire at all.
  • I have a friend of a friend whose daughter is named Sapphyre. She's gotta be about 10 or so now? Her family is kinda trashy so that's where my brain goes.

Makes me think of the insult (and none meant to insult you, so, sorry. Once again... Where my brain goes...) Where women name their kids after things they can't afford- Diamond, Bentley, Mercedes, Rent...
  • Maybe consider something like Sapphire in a different language? Many Hebrew/Latin/Greek names, etc. use animals and precious stones for names and they sound A LOT better.

  • I think Isabella Sapphire would be much better as an adult/professional.
  • Sounds like a stripper name to me.
    You beat me to it
  • Sounds trashy. At least put Isabella first. You can still always call her Sapphire.

  • high five to your in-laws for giving you their honest opinion. often people will say that they like a name when they really don't.....then talk about it behind your back. Sapphire is pretty ridiculous sounding. please look at the above poll and believe it.

  • If you really like Sapphire, I looked it up, and Safira is Portuguese and Sapira is Hebrew for sapphire. I actually think I've met a Sapira before. Those sound less stripperish.

  • It makes me think of Bambi and Destiny pole dancing, mid-day in a bar filled with old men and cigarette smoke.

    .........and Velvet!
  • Sapphire is not a good choice at all, but if you really love it put it in the mn spot instead.  Isabella is a beautiful name.

  • Sapphire is really bad.
  • Another vote for sounding like a stripper name.
  • Not a fan of Sapphire.  I immediately think of an...exotic dancer.

  • Sapphire is pretty bad on its own, but if your LO is born any time in the month of September it would be incredibly cheesy. I don't know when you're due, but please don't name your daughter sapphire, especially because of reasons listed above which I won't repeat again.

Your friends and family are probably just trying to not hurt your feelings.
  • Sapphire isn't going to be a cute little baby forever. She's going to grow up and I feel like you are setting her up for failure with a name like that.
  • It's a stripper name. Isabella Sapphire is a million times better.

  • In all honesty, it sounds like a stripper to me as well.

And totally true about family members and friends not wanting to hurt your feelings if you have already said that you are using the name. My friend found that when she said "We are THINKING of the name ___" she got a ton of different responses (a lot of people trying to change her mind). But when she started saying "We are GOING to name him ___" people just talked about how great it was.

If someone in my family said "We have chosen the name Sapphire Isabella."....right then and there, I would know that they are dead set on the name by the way they said it. And then I would say "Oh! That is a cute name!".....but then as soon as I could, I would get on this page and put it down under the "Facebook gems" baby name thread.

  • It's stripper city and so bad. But you don't plan on changing it, so good luck.

  • I knew a dancer named Sapphire.

Sapphire is great first name if you are planning on raising a stripper or a slam poet.  Like a PP said, it does not pass the resume or the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court test.

Edited to add:  I'm not comparing slam poety to stripping I just wanted to point out that the one person I know of who uses the name Sapphire picked it up as a stage name and wasn't actually given that name at birth.
