Activities for 3 months

I know we've posted things about activities to do now that our Lo's are awake and wanting to play during the day... So if there is a thread feel free to navigate me. But what toys, activities are you all doing to stimulate babies new interests in the world around them? I find myself running out of things to do during the day..He loves his play mat and tummy time but need some things/ ideas to switch it up! TIA

Re: Activities for 3 months

  • I've been reading stories and he looks at the pictures. I have also been putting him in his bumbo seat for a few minutes at a time to help him practice sitting.

  • He enjoys his bath, so we try to reheat the water and keep him there for a bit. We take him to the playground, because he enjoys sitting and watching the kids play. On his play mat and in his Bumbo, we are working with him on reaching for things. In the Bumbo, we put plastic keys over his foot and he tries to reach for them. On the mat, we dangle his favorite toys over him and move them close and far away.

  • We've got a space in the living room with all of her mats, her boppy pillow, and her Bumbo set up. We'll cycle through those this, usually 10 or 15 minutes on each or less if she's getting bored. I'll also sit so she rests on my thighs looking up at me and we'll talk, or make funny faces. I also read to her so she can see the pictures, go for walks, sit on the deck, and she even really likes watching football so sometimes we'll sit on the couch and do that.

One thing I saw on pinterest that I can't wait to try is to put globs of non-toxic washable paint on a piece of paper and put the paper in a gallon Ziploc bag. Then, during tummy time, seal the bag and let baby smack the colors - baby's first artwork!

Definitely for when LO has good neck control and is totally comfortable with her hands. Not sure if we'll be doing this as soon as she turns 3 months - this Tuesday - but probably by the end of the month!

  • He's not too fond of his bumbo.. He lasts about two minutes lol. And he loves his baths so I always get excited for bath time which I try to do at same time each night before bed as part of his routine... Thanks for the replies!
  • When it's not too hot, we have been going outside. I put down a big blanket under a tree and he loves it! I think the fresh air helps knock him out for a good nap too.
  • Yeah, my kid wasn't a Bumbo fan at first, but he is tolerating it longer if I put him in it when he's in a good mood, and get on the floor with him to play and make faces. I finally started using a mirror for tummy time as everyone suggested, and it worked wonders.

He loves the swing, too. I think he gets motion sickness because by the end of his time in it, he's slowly spit up his whole lunch... But he smiles through it.

@esampson1983 - how long do you leave your kid in the swing? My LO can stay in it for an hour+ sometimes, as long as we pay attention to him every few minutes (talk to him, smile back at him). I am totally overthinking this...
  • Um, our activities are anything that keeps her from being grumpy in about 6 minute increments. Activity mat? Cool for 6 minutes until she's sick of it. Tummy time? Another 6 minutes until she starts whining. Singing songs? Sure for one or two. She's just gets bored so easily yet I don't want to overstimulate her.

FYI I don't actually time 6 minutes she just has a very short span of putting up with things so I assume it's about 5-6 minutes.

  • We talk, stare at mobiles (we change up weekly), read, play with toys (new phenomenon started at 11 weeks),go for walks where I learned he is obsessed with trees, tummy time

I'm with @dancegurl1118. We don't do these things for long other then walking. I also have to switch how I hold him a lot during walks now. He is getting squirmy!!

It depends on how he is feeling. Some days 5 minutes. Some days an hour plus, especially if we use white noise with it.

Ok, phew. I was getting worried that leaving him in that long wasn't good.
Things are going well with my LO, but I'm having some days of second-guessing myself after learning some new things on here lately.
    Thanks for the response!
  • @esampson1983 - Are you referring to the ceiling fan? Our boy loves the ceiling fans! I think because the fan is a dark color. But we look at the fan and talk about Mr. Fan. Lol

@henrytviii - We love those books! Yummy Yucky is a favorite in this house. LO also seems to like one we have called Chomp.

Since LO is a second child, I feel like he doesn't get as much direct activity play as the first which makes me feel a little bad at times. But he loves his swing and he loves sitting in his bouncer watching his big brother play on the floor.

That's funny you say you feel bad he doesn't get as much direct activity play. This is my first (only?) and I feel bad that he's not around other kids more! He loooves watching kids, so I try to take him to a playground a few times a week.
Need to find a mommy group but... Just no time. Guess this guy is doomed to be the serious oldest/only child stereotype.
  • @virginiaunicorn11 - I never thought about it that way! I guess I'm just comparing it to my experience with the first baby who got all the attention, all the time. Just like yours, my LO loves to watch his brother and older kids play.
  • LO loves going for walks in her stroller, tummy time and watching TV while sitting in DH's lap. She's also recently fallen in love with her mamaroo and has been taking her naps in it during the day. I count that as an activity because prior to falling asleep, she's staring and trying to grab at the toy balls on the mobile. It exhausts her and I love it.
  • Ok I was going to get a bumbo but then I read this: https://mamaot.com/beware-the-baby-bumbo-seat/

Has anyone else heard to avoid them? They seem all the rage!
  • ^interesting, I just bought one today.
  • @hoodoll82 I was actually given 2 and sat LO in it for about a minute on Sunday. He still needed help from me with his head and looked extremely uncomfortable so out he came. That article actually makes sense to me...
  • @hoodoll82 we read that too and have just used it a few mins at a time. Its cute to see him in it and they say the same thing about wearing your baby in wraps and carriers. I personally think you could make something out of a lot of things. I'm not neglectful, my pediatrician agrees. I don't leave LO in it for hours and hours.

And this again...your baby shouldn't stay in any 1 position for long periods of time, so is it true? Yes, but they could make the same article "beware the laying on the back"

  • LO looks so uncomfortable in the bumbo. Kind of slumped. And her fat thighs make it impossible to get her out. Home girl needs some core strength.

Ya my little looks uncomfortable too and is hard to get in and out because of his thunder thighs
  • According to Dr. Internet your baby should just switch between tummy time and flat on his/her back in the crib all day long. Anything else and they'll never learn to sit or crawl or walk.

Yes, the ceiling fan ;) I agree- I think he likes the contrasting colors. He just talks and talks to the fan!

...don't forget playing drums and pretending to talk on the phone.
  • Heh! Didn't mean to cause any ruckus or judgement about the Bumbo - I was just surprised when I read the article and per usual started to question everything... Stupid internet.

Re thunder thighs, an acquaintance has the summer infant one I believe for the same reason.
  • I use the app Babysparks. There's a free version and an upgrade. Everyday they have different programs you can run through with your LO for fun and development. I do a couple of sets of each program.
  • We've had fun playing "sensory games." I'll let her smell different things, mainly foods. She loved the smell of banana. Yesterday she touched different materials, i.e. a kitchen sponge with a scrubber side, tin foil, silk. It's funny to see her face when experiencing something new.

Is this an app that baby participates in? Or does it recommend activities to do with LO outside of the app? I'm big on limiting screen time for LO (personal choice) but would be interested in new ideas for activities for her, as long as they're not dependent on her using a device.
