Honest opinions on this baby name...

My husband and I really like the name Benson, but some of our friends, and family don't. I know it doesn't matter what they think because this is our son. I want to get honest opinions on the name from more then our circle. Please let me know what you think. ☺

Not a fan. I think it sounds more like a last name than first.

  • I like it..its uncommon..which is appealing
    To me..
  • I think it's cute, but be prepared for him to be called Ben
  • It's a surname. I don't care for it as a first name.
  • To me the meaning of a name is very important and ironically my son who's due date is literally Christmas Day will be named Layton Benjamin. Benson means "son of Benjamin" and Benjamin means "son of the right hand". I'm all for unique names and Layton happens to be a surname also like Benson so I say go for what you feel. When people meet your little one they'll fall in love with him and his name will feel perfect.
  • It's nms and he definitely will be a Ben immediately.
  • I am 31, and only 1 of my friends said anything about the Butler. My husband, and I call him Benny. I appreciate all of your feedback so far.
  • I like it! Ben or Benny is a cute nickname too.

  • Benny...I love it!!
  • I like it. Plenty of first names are also last names. My son is an Oliver, I didn't avoid it just because of John Oliver.

  • I love the name! If it feels like the right name then it will stick! Who cares what anyone thinks as long as you and your husband love it!

My sons name is going to be Nixon James and I get a weird reactions sometimes but I don't care! I love the name and it fits.. We even refer to him as Nix sometimes. (which will be his nick name)
  • I don't think it's the worst, but it sounds more like a last name or a pet's name than a first name. Ben or Benny is nice, but be prepared for people to assume his full name is Benjamin for the rest of his life.

  • Thank you all. My first son is AJ, Anthony Jr. People always ask if his name is Andrew. We have looked at other names, but we just keep coming back to Benson. @wassuphoes I am a SVU fan lol.

I like benson. It was our top choice for quite awhile.
  • Not at all my style but it's fine. I wouldn't give it the stink eye.

It's nms to be honest. Also, Benson & Hedges is a cigarette brand in Europe so I immediately think of that.

  • I like it. I named DS Jameson, so we constantly get "oh, is that how he was conceived?" or "Is that DH's favorite drink?" As long as you are fine with the snide comments and questions, screw em. I LOVE DS's name; I actually fought for it as soon as they said boy.
  • I don't typically like last names as first names, but this one is nice, if you're going for that style. The TV show Benson also comes to mind, but it's so old and obscure it should in no way be a detractor. People will make associations with all names, as long as YOUR association is positive it's a great name.

I think Olivia too and to hear your a fan makes it quite silly and side eye. Anthony is great I think Benjamin or Benedict is more in line with Anthony and a million times less trendy.

  • I love the name Benson (and yes I did think of the old sitcoms Soap and Benson which were noth hilarious due to the butler Benson) bur most people will not know where it came from and I am one of those that really feels that a name must be what the parents like and not what everyone else feels a.child ahould be named.
  • I like it. We haven't decided on a name yet but when we do we are not telling anybody until he is born.
  • I didn't pick the name after the TV show. My husband actually suggested it. :) Thanks everyone's opinion.

    ;)

I think it's an ok name. I doubt most people would associate it with an older show like that. My mom named me Jamie after the Bionic Woman from the Six Million Dollar Man show in the 70s. No one associates my name with that show or character.

    Jamie

  • I'm named from an actress on a show and my middle name came from Dynasty. NOBODY associates my name with Dynasty or the other show/actress (I can't remember the name). But everyone is different.

  • I like it. Also, like the nn's Ben & Benny

  • I immediately thought of the TV show, but I don't hate the name. It's infinitely better than many I've seen lately. It's classic.

  • One of my cousins is named Benson, and he goes by Ben. Benson was his paternal grandmother's maiden name. Apart from a family connection like that, I prefer Benjamin.
