Luxury Items

Ladies,

I know we have so much expense coming our way with the essential items for baby (stroller, cot, clothes etc!) but I wonder if you have picked any luxury items for you and /or baby?

I honestly didn't think I would but a friend passed me on a list of baby items and on it was an Anya Hindmarch baby emergency kit. It is a little case that has specific compartments for clean clothes, diapers and wipes. It also comes with a laundry bag and changing mat and will fit nicely into a large handbag or underneath the stroller! So this is on my list... Feels like an expense and a luxury but I really love it.

Over to you!

  • I want some nice soft Jammies too. It feels like after labor you will be depleted. I just don't want to spend too much lol! I feel guilty getting stuff for me right now.

  • I put a slightly more expensive ($75) diaper bag on my list. It was the only DH said he would be willing to carry around. I love the girly ones since I had the boy with DS. But DH said no!
  • Im totally with you on the expensive Jammies and sweats. I told my mom and DH (it's a celebration for him if I actually give him gift suggestions)that's all I want for Xmas , and our anniversary is January 17th too so it's happening. :)
  • Ah now I want to see links to the good PJs! Would make a difference to my usual Gap sweats!
  • I feel like great pajamas are essential after birth! I'm splurging on some nice soft pjs with a button up top for easy feeding after I give birth and a comfy pair of slippers to match! No shame in my game, I've done this once before, I know what I need this time to make it the best and most comfortable, so I'll be rocking the adult diapers and expensive pajamas :))
  • Also, diaper bags are so expensive now it's almost impossible to find a decent one under $50. Supply and demand. These companies know we need them, they have began milking it! The thing I'm really splurging on for my baby that is completely unneeded is a jacuzzi bath. I could easily get a cheap plastic tub, but I had to get the one with the removable hose and little jets. I know it's ridiculous, I still insisted she needed it.
  • Yes to the luxury items. I will not be spending a fortune on afterbirth pajamas. I have some expensive night wear from La Perla but I would much rather ruin the hospital gown than something like that.

If I were going to get a "luxury" item for birth or after it would be a house cleaning or gift cards to a food delivery service. Matter of fact maybe I will.

This. The last thing I know I wanna be doing is cleaning my house after just having a newborn. Time is precious and when baby is sleeping, I wanna be sleeping/doing other things, not cleaning! To bad I don't have the extra money right now to get a cleaning lady lol
  • I want a bigger diaper bag ($45ish) and a Boba wrap. If I thought it was possible I'd so spring for a nice rocker/glider/recliner. Maybe it'll work out to get one with that lovely tax refund we should be getting this spring ;)
  • I want a coach diaper bag that's 100$ xD if I don't get it for my baby shower I'll be getting it for a gift to myself haha
  • The 4moms mamaroo is my luxury baby item - its pretty expensive and on my registry. I haven't thought of a luxury item for myself, but i'm pretty good at spoiling myself when needed so not worried ;)
  • Yes to a cleaning service, that would be my pick too.  And how about a dog walker?  I'm giving birth Dec/early January in Ohio and its cold here!  I actually mentioned this to DH the other day and he was receptive to the idea.
  • Oh and I'm looking at that mamaroo too.  It looks awesome.  And if I'm really feeling like I need to do something for myself after baby, I'm thinking spa services:  a nice massage, maybe getting my nails done.  Just some time away from the house would be nice!
  • Can I buy a clone? I think that could come in handy.

  • I'll be investing in a Tula this time around. I'm not dealing with our current carrier that is too big for me.

For those of you buying expensive jams, please at least get a dark color so you won't be so sad when you ruin them with leaking boobs and bloody messes for six weeks! I actually pulled out all of my crappy old clothes so I didn't ruin anything nice.
  • We were gifted a Tibuk2 diaper bag.  Both DH and I have messenger bags that we take to work with us and have lasted us over a decade for not only work but through international travel.  So when DH found out they made diaper bags, he put it on our wishlist and my in laws surprised us with one!  Definitely an item that is worth the money, as we already know the quality of the brand.
  • I've purchased a few nicer items. A Blooming Bath because I hated the whale tub and trying to keep my newborns from slipping around in there, a nice snugly blanket, and some woven wraps for baby. I have almost everything I need already from older kids though so a new baby isn't quite as financially daunting as with my first. And for those looking for Mamaroo swings, keep an eye on Craigslist or local swap sites, I scored one for cheap on there and they show up fairly regularly

  • The mamaroo is great. I got the fully-loaded one for my BFF and it was fantastic.
  • @chilton1286 sure did! I work in the fashion industry in the luxury sector so my view of reality is completely distorted lol!

Baby and I have coordinating cashmere going home outfits (me sweatpants and Chelsea boots, baby onsie and moccasins) which is totally impractical especially bc babe's is white but it was cute and on sale. I also bought a 4moms bouncer which they'll probably hate but it wouldn't be the first time I wasted money on something my baby hated.

I'm a full believer in splurging on yourself as long as everything else (bills, mortgage, savings) is taken care of and it doesn't put you out financially. It helps me get in a good space and not spazz out when things get too hectic.

  • @miaitene - I live in Cashmere sweatpants in the winter… But I hope that yours or black or a dark color going home?
  • I agree with borrowing a Mamaroo (or buying cheap on CL)! My daughter hated it. Seems to be the theme with that thing--some babies love, some hate.

Japanese Weekend sells amazing maternity and pp pajamas. I splurged on some, and will get a new robe too (probably just from Target!) I also like to get fresh and fun travel toiletries to take to the hospital.

  • My luxury items (that I paid for myself) were a decked out mamaroo and limited edition petunia pickle bottom diaper bag that looks exactly like a high end purse (DH registered for a Columbia backpack diaper bag as soon as I showed him mine ;) ).
The Pj thing I definitely will not do! I was 11 when I saw my mother give birth to my little sister at home with the assistance of a midwife and I will never forget how messy everything got. Thankfully hydrogen peroxide and witch hazel are excellent about getting blood out of clothing without ruining the color.
I bought a black robe and 2 button-down henley pj shifts from Nordstrom Rack and that's my fancy hospital wear!
I did splurge on 2 Body After Baby "recovery" and "reclaim" garments (the Sienna and Leilani) but even those were bought on Zulilly so I saved $70 total on both!
  • What's a fully loaded / decked out Mamaroo @BostonBaby1 @lynem29 ? Currently living in Middle East and have fear of missing out!

They have several different models. The highest end ones function differently. I purchased 3 1/2 years ago, so they weren't sold at target then. I'm not sure if they all come with the iPod adapter or if it's sold separately… You also want the infant insert.

I think what PP wrote is true though, some babies love them and some babies don't.

    @chilton1286
I got the 2015 mamaroo in designer plush with the newborn insert. That's what I consider fully loaded because that's all the accessories you can add and the iPod feature is on the 2015 model. I'm sure shortly after my LO is born though the company will come out with a newer version just like everything else :-w
Like @BostonBaby1 said some LO's can't stand them. If that happens I have a very deserving friend who I would love to gift mine to because she'll have an infant around the same time.

*edited because my brain hasn't started working this afternoon yet.
  • I had to order mine from the UK due to the electricity voltage here - wondered if there was more to it! Definitely need to get the newborn insert :) thanks!

I was going to say this! I also think a nice pedicure right at the end of pregnancy might be in order ;) I never get my nails done but one of the ladies I worked with swore that it helped her go into labor :)
  • I want the stokkes tripp trapp high chair, I love that it grows to adult hood and I can get a color that matches our furniture...but it is an expensive high chair with multiple parts sold seperately so I am not sure if I'll justify it or not ($200-500 depending on accesories). However, if we have more than one child the accesories can be reused and we'd just need another chair (the chair adjust to ergonomically correct height all the way to adulthood so the base can be used as long as desired).

I'm trying to decide if I want the bassinet for the running stroller so we can use it from birth or if we should just wait until 3-6 months to use it (I know you can't run until baby is older but I am looking at the mountain buggy terrain which has city wheels included in the new model).

  • Jelly over this post. If it were in our budget we'd get everything luxurious! I think I'm going to try to convince my husband to buy a really nice diaper bag. I found a Jujube at BRU I loved, but it was definitely pricey. :(
  • @BostonBaby1 my favorite color - charcoal grey ;-)
  • I do love just a few things that are a little nicer. My current diaper bag is a Kate Spade one and I love it! I just couldn't see myself with a traditional one and this is really spacious and have to say, that 2 years later, it still looks as good as new. I've washed it now several times and it's still good so I'm planning on using for 2nd baby.

What I'm coveting are a couple of blankets from Designed by Artists that are just so soft and beautiful. And this Freshly Picked set that has a rob for mom and moccassins and swaddle for baby that is just gorgeous but can't justify getting for myself. I've given it as gift ideas to quite a few ppl so maybe one day...
  • I want a BOB Revolution Flex stroller in Lagoon Blue so much.  It's so functional, pretty, and will probably actually be incredibly practical living in a city with bumpy sidewalks and some flat hiking trails nearby.  I know it's normal for some people but for us a $400 stroller is a luxury, compared to the $100-200 ones my friends have who don't live in a city and use theirs less.

Unfortunately my MIL just called tonight excitedly saying they wanted to buy it for us to get us something really nice and wanted details about which model and color we wanted before they went to REI.  Twenty minutes into the conversation and I realized she never looked up how much it cost. When the price came up, it was really awkward  I tried to express that they really shouldn't feel like they have to get it and that we put it on the registry for the completion coupon and to let people know the stroller is picked out, but I think she was still a little embarrassed, and I feel awful . :(
  • I suppose my luxury item was also the stroller. We already have a City Mini GT that we got for DD. I got it through my Amazon Baby Registry with the completion discount last time and it also happened to go on sale, so we got it at a great price. This time, I got a City Select because I'll be able to put both DD and the new LO in it at the same time. I didn't get the second seat because we won't need that for a long time and may not even need it if DD will use a glider board later on. I got an older year model for $299. It's a little more cumbersome than our other stroller, but I'll need it, so I wanted to get it.

I'm also kind of interested in a MamaRoo, but I doubt we'll get one of those.

  • Look around online I got a brand new one off craigslist it was the 2014 model but still in box and wrapped up for 75.00. And it was the one one that's 200 plus :) . Just a suggestion if you don't get from shower
  • That was suppose to be a reply to someone not sure why it made its own post
  • Diaper bags are definitely coming up as our luxury item here! I'm honestly not sure if I'll get one. I've used the same tote for the last 6 years and carrying anything else would seem really unnatural! I can insert the baby emergency kit to that and chuck in bottles etc if needed. FTM here so might be absolutely deluded but can I do without?
