I plan on leaving work 4 weeks prior to EDD.. I want to make sure I'm prepared for Xmas before LO arrives, I originally was planning to take 6 months maternity leave but I am now leaning more towards taking 9 months
cw122515 but that's only if you are "disabled" and can't work - right? Your doctor will have to authorize it and you have to have a disabling condition as far as I understand, I'm from CA too.
I get a year off in the uk and my husband gets 2 weeks, both of us paid, I can take time before and after the baby is born depending on how I feel, I'm thinking of finishing work at 34 weeks but I may work on longer
My due date is 12/29 and October-December is my works busy season, so I will be working until Christmas Eve if I can. No point in coming back after Christmas for just a few days.
I'm an adjunct professor & my last day of class is 12/9, w/my due date 12/12! If I can't teach the class I have to pay a sub out of my own pocket, plus it's an acting class so it's really hard to have someone else teach & then judge their work, which I have to grade them on. So, I'm hoping the peanut stays put until my due date, or even a few days after to give me time to finish grades! I do have another teacher who I will pay to be "on call" for the last two weeks, just in case. Cross your fingers for me ladies & let's all hope there's no school closures for any reason as I probably won't be able to swing a make-up day! Also, who else wants to move out of the usa after hearing the maternity leaves in other countries? You ladies are LUCKY! Enjoy it!
I'm due 12/6 and plan on starting my leave the week before Thanksgiving, somewhere right at 37 weeks. My previous two babies were born at 37 weeks and I'm prone to extremely short labors and the way my job is set up, the pharmacy can't be open without me there. So my plan is to head to the hospital at the first sign of labor (45-60 minute drive) and even planning on closing the pharmacy down entirely and making my manager deal with finding coverage for me, I'd still have a really hard time getting out (can't just tell everyone waiting "smell you later, hope someone comes by to sell you the scripts you're waiting on") So for peace of mind I'll be starting mine a bit early (assuming I don't get induced early due to IUGR, which is looking likely) I don't think work will begrudge me the FMLA time, winter usually has people scrambling to find hours so I still plan on staying home until baby is 12 weeks

@grkgdss00 I think it is a standard with CA state SDI regardless of your ability to do your job. I have a desk job with work from home flexibility and could technically work until I give labor but my HR rep recommended I take full advantage of the leave if I wanted to. I was told I would just need paperwork from my dr. stating my EDD.
I work for a local TV news station and I get up to 4 weeks paid ahead of the due date. My EDD is Dec 4th. It's non-transferable to use after baby is here... So part of me thinks I should take advantage.. But I've heard from other mommies say they wished they worked longer cuz that last month dragged. I still don't know what to do? I might just see how I feel.
I'm planning on finishing up 2 weeks prior to the birth (having a scheduled Caesar). With my son I ended up finishing earlier than I had planned as I got very uncomfortable and tired by the end and it was nice to have some down time prior to him arriving. I think it's important to be flexible if you can, as it can take a bigger toll on your body than you think it will.
I'm a teacher (but in a support/pseudo admin role). My due date is Dec. 10th, and I was originally going to work through Thanksgiving and then take off the two weeks before due date. A coworker talked me into working two more weeks, through Dec. 11, but now I'm questioning that. After lurking on other BMB, it seems like things get VERY uncomfortable at the end... As a FTM, I'm not quite sure what to do. Although the leave policy is horrible, hubby and I have enough saved that I can go out whenever I want/need to, so it really comes down to personal preference for me. Not sure what to do.
Hey- my school is full of teachers in their late 20s / early 30s (read between the 40 of us there's usually 2-4 maternity leaves per year) and most of the time due to the demands of the job ( being on your feet all day, middle schoolers can be stressful) a lot of people's doctors have been forcing them out 1-3 weeks early because of blood pressure and swelling. My friend was set on working up to her due date (Nov 19) a few years ago but her dr made her stop Nov 1. So keep in mind you may not even have to make the decision yourself.
With my dec 31 due date I'm hoping to be able to teach right up until break since that'll still give me almost a couple weeks
I'm due 12/17 and I plan on working until Thanksgiving then I'm outta there! Will be leaving permanently as I am staying home with kids for a few years! Can't wait.
I have an office job. I will be working right up until I go into labor. I only get a small amount for short term disability so I want all the time I can get with baby at home.
Planning on working as close to my due date as possible. I'm a high school teacher so I'm on my feet a lot but it isn't exactly strenuous work. The amount of leave I can take is limited, I'm not going to waste it before the baby is born!
Im working up to my due date because i only have 22 days of vacation, 20 sick/ personal and 3 wks of std and i have fml that im using the same time as std so i can get almost a full paycheck
You might want to check into getting paid for holidays if you are already on leave. I'm due Dec 3rd and am trying to work thru thanksgiving weekend because we don't get paid for holidays if you're on leave (and I want those 2days of pay for thanksgiving)!
I'm a teacher but work for a charter CMO with very generous maternity leave as far as teachers go (12 weeks paid childcare leave). That being said, I want to save all of those days for once she gets here. I intend on working up until winter break as my EDD (12/23) is once we are on vacation. I don't imagine I will need to take it before then.
My colleague took who just had a baby girl began her maternity leave two weeks prior to baby's arrival so her and her husband could get things in order. I think it all depends on what you need.
I worked until the day I delivered, but I had switched to working from home for about three weeks before he came. It was a nice transition if your job has that flexibility. Plus I could work in my pjs
My employer doesn't offer any maternity leave. We are only a 10 person company so I am taking all of my California Disability which starts at 36 weeks!!
I will be delivering at the hospital where I work so I plan on working for as long as my body will let me. Ive already had preterm contractions at 25 weeks so Im praying to deliver full term. My work does not offer any short term disability so I plan on just using the 12 unpaid weeks from FMLA. Luckily my hubby has good benefits through his job, so I plan on switching to his health insurance after my earn time is all used up. We get a bank that includes sick days and vacation all in one I will only have about a month saved up at that point. Once earn time is gone, gotta pay out of pocket for your own company benefits. Wish I knew more about all this when I accepted the job, but having a baby was not at all on my radar back then!
