Baby only wants to stand!

My DS hates being on his back, he is so over it. I try tummy time and it's very frustrating for him. We only do it in tiny time increments. I'll try to sit him up and that makes him mad too. He will slouch his body down making it hard to put him in any baby seat. He's only happy when he's completely standing! He marches when we hold him up, it's pretty cute. But he is literally super angry that he can't walk yet. I tell him he has a few months to go. Just wondering if anyone else has a baby that is determined to walk already. I feel bad for the guy.

Re: Baby only wants to stand!

  • Same here! My LO is 3 months today, every time we hold her she is pushing up on her legs! I let her stand as much as she wants but she spits up every time I let her. :( And she doesn't care much for tummy time either. I came across this site https://mamaot.com/2012/03/25/tips-for-making-tummy-time-a-little-less-um-miserable/
For tips & tricks on how to get baby to enjoy tummy time more. And she's an occupational therapist so she must know what she's doing. ;)

  • Mine is the same way! And now when she's laying on her back she's struggling with her head to sit up.
  • My grandmother just told me that having a baby bear weight on his legs can cause them to be bow legged.. This has to be an old wives tale lol!
  • That's a great point actually. My parents just came in town for the weekend and said the same thing. We have an appt with the ped this week and I was going to bring it up to him. Even though my DS is huge, he may not be ready for a walker, jumper, etc. just yet.
  • @jesshowland I actually never thought of that before, it does sound concerning though!
@lilsunflowermomma Please let me know what the pediatrician says! DD doesn't go back til the end of the month.
  • Our pediatrician said it was a good sign for him to bear weight on his legs.
  • We just visited our pediatrician and he said that is is an "old wives tale". It's normal development for babies and does not cause bow legs!
  • Hallelujah! :) Thanks, ladies!
  • Went to the ped today. He said it's great that my DS wants to stand - however, walkers and jumpers should be used just for fun and not on a regular basis. He said floor time is most important right now. He told us that the previous generation used walkers all the time and they saw a decline in babies crawling on time. Floor time it is!
  • Okay, we don't even have a jumper or walker yet so we're good there. Thanks for the insight! And yes, floor time it is!:)
  • My 16 week old is the same. I put her on the jolly jumper today and O M G she loooved it! It's okay for use if it's only 10-15 minutes a day only. And they usually don't last that long anyways. She got bored after 5mins
  • Mine's easily getting 60-90 minutes of 'tummy time', so I do about 10 minutes in the exersaucer, and I'm going to get a used jumperoo, for another 10 minute block.  This kid gets bored easily so I like to try to break up her day with something new.  I won't use both in the same day though.
  • My mother said the same thing but my LO loves to stand!!
  • Haha I thought mine was the only one..she loves to stand..every time I hold her up to stand her legs are stiff so I don't make her sit down lollll..she wants to grow up fast!
  • Our son is the same way and has been since about 2 months! He tries to stand all the time! Amd when you hold him to stand he puts one foot in front of the other! I'm glad we aren't the only ones! And hearing y'all say your pediatricians said it can cause their legs to bow is an old wives tale is a relief!
  • My little man loves to stand but I know how important tummy time and floor time is. He hates tummy time and fights it the whole time and gets hysterical. He seems to last longer in his crib, so intake him to his room every time he needs a diaper change and I let him have tummy time in his crib while I get stuff done in his room.
It's embarrassing to say, but his room still isn't fully put together. We moved thinking we had 6 weeks till he would be born, then had him 4 weeks early so we really were only in the house for 2 weeks and I had developed preeclampsia so I really wasn't up to putting his room together. We only have AC in our bedroom so he's slept in a rock n play there till now. So, I get things done for 10 minute increments multiple times a day while he has tummy time. It sounds like he thinks it's hell... But I know it's important!

My dd is the same way when it comes to being so mad about not being able to walk yet. As soon as she was long enough I bought a walker.
  • Mine has been doing that for months! I always get comments about how strong she in on her feet/legs.
Thank god for her walker she loves it
