The steak controversy

Hello Beautiful Ladies!!

I have done a quick search and I don't think anyone has asked this before so apologies if they have! BUTTTT I'm trying to get to the bottom of all this "how should you eat your steak" controversy!

Me personally I'm a medium-rare type of girl so I just wanted to confirm how I can and can't eat my steak (I've been craving steak like crazy) I've done a lot of research and all the answers are so conflicted some people say that it's ok to have steak at least medium as long as it's sealed others say well-done is the ONLY way to have it and others say that as long as the meat is fresh enjoy it how you like!

I am SO confused and just really want some clarity haha because as I said steak has been such a massive craving for me but if I have to have it well done I'd prefer to try and avoid the craving haha as that is "ruined steak" to me haha.

Thanks in advance ladies!
Xxx

Re: The steak controversy

  • When I was pregnant with my first it was always well done for me. Will probably do the same this time. Better safe than sorry. It's only 9 months, you'll have time for delicious, juicy steaks.

  • I'm a medium-rare eater too but I think i'd do medium for now. With that said, i had sushi today :) i checked each item and passed on high mercury level items. (Once the fish is frozen the bacteria are killed, a mandatory procedure in the States!)
  • There's a higher chance of bacteria in something like a burger not being cooked all the way through because every part of the burger has been exposed to tables, knives, grinders, etc, so I will be eating those at least medium (usually prefer MR). Steak...I probably wouldn't trust it from a chain restaurant or store like Walmart, but when I go home I'll probably have a medium rare farm-grown, home butchered steak. Like sushi, I wouldn't eat anything undercooked unless you with absolute certainty where it's been and how it was prepared.
  • :::lurking:::: I have never heard of this controversy. I eat steak medium rare, always. Burgers are different, I always do those well done.

For what it's worth I also eat raw sushi from reputable establishments.
  • Our meat comes from the back yard so I'll forever eat my steak medium rare .
  • I'm upset as I've just learned I can't have my usual rare steak :( I love steak and have a craving for it. That and beef crisps and carrot and swede mash! What's a girl to do!! Xmas is my usual time for prawns and steak .
This is baba no 5 and I have to say this is the first time I've ever worried about what I'm eating so much!! 19 years ago it was no liver, no raw eggs and no soft cheese. So I probably consumed most of what we can't eat now!
  • We buy home grown, MR for me. Burgers I eat well done now.

  • I do burgers well done now, but we buy high quality steaks so I still stick with MR for that.
  • Like most posters I usually get my steaks MR but when pregnant I get M. Burgers are a different story - I always get them WD pregnant or not.

  • I don't see how this is considered a controversy. An excerpt from the American Pregnancy Association, "Raw Meat: Uncooked seafood and rare or undercooked beef or poultry should be avoided because of the risk of contamination with coliform bacteria, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella."

That being said when it comes down to it, it's your preference. Personally for me, anything pink on meat grosses me out.

  • I'm really wondering the same thing. I always get my steak as rare as possible. But being pregnant I'm being told I can eat it any way I want but then reading I have to have Medium Well at minimum. I'm so confused and seriously want to eat a big steak with a baked potato and broccoli.
  • I asked my OB about steaks and he said that I could eat them however I wanted.
  • Thanks ladies! I'm actually from Australia and we have pretty high quality standards in most of our retributable restaurants so I think I'll double check with my OB and continue on with my love for streak :x
  • 155° kills E. Coli, which is what the concern is. Depending on where you look, that can be either medium to well-done.

  • My DOCTOR (not the Internet) told me medium is fine. She told me before i could thank to ask when she went over food no-no's. I personally got an aversion to rare even before I knew I was pregnant. I normally love a rare steak, but can't stomach it right now.

Your body will tell you what's okay, trust your instincts. We are fascinating, complex beings literally MADE FOR MAKING BABIES!
  • How do you determine whether the meat is "fresh"? Unless you're butchering it yourself, you really have no way of knowing. I would go with medium well/well... like a PP said, better safe than sorry. However, some people eat sushi or even drink in moderation. Some people avoid cold cuts because of listeria, but in the past few years there have been listeria outbreaks associated with watermelon and peanut butter. Talk to your doctor, but it's impossible to avoid *all* risks... ultimately you have to decide if it's worth the associated risk or not.

  • I'm usually medium rare, too. During pregnancy I just do medium instead:) my OB also said that is fine! She did tell me no sushi though.
