35 weeks today! 1 1/2cm dilated!

So excited!! 35 weeks today and had my normal check up. Was told I am 1 1/2 dilated! I don't know whether to freak out or not lol. I don't remember being dilated until my due date with my first one. Still so excited! The end is near!

How about you ladies? Anyone else dilating yet? Your past experience? Your thoughts on this?

  • Im 34wks and 4 days... Havent had a pelvic exam since my pap at the very beginning. At what point do they start doing full exams?

  • Normally 36 weeks for my doctors office, but they decided to check me since he had to do the swab for bacterial whatever it's called.
  • My midwife said cervical checks are unnecessary and don't tell you anything about when labor could start. So in theory you could be a few centimeters dilated for a while, or not. I hate being checked, so I'm pretty happy she won't do it until I am in labor and wants to see how I'm progressing.

My doctor said the same thing. They will only check for dilation if you ask (unless you are in labor or have symptoms of labor, obvi). I suppose when they do the swab, since they are already "up there" (lol), it makes sense.
  • Agree with others, your cervix could be completely closed and you could have baby hours later or you can be 3-4cm and "stretchy" for weeks before baby is born... no hard and fast rule! But at least you are already 1.5cm down!
  • I am 32 w 5 d and already 1 cm dilated and thinning.. You could stay at that for a month or so (I am hoping that is my case) so I wouldn't put too much focus on it, but since you're already 35 weeks you're almost full term so that is very exciting!
  • My doctor usually starts checks at 36 weeks and has always been able to tell about how close labor will be based on dilation, thinning, and how low baby's head is. It at least makes you feel like SOMETHING is happening those last few weeks of waiting! But yes, plenty of people are dilated for weeks with no progress until labor truly begins. And a friend of mine had early labor and dilated to 3 at 30 weeks only to go back to 1 at 36 weeks.
  • My midwife said they will check on my due date to see how things are looking and also start talking about the possibility of induction but they prefer not to have to unless there is issues. Fine by me.:)
  • I think I will refuse checks if I am not having premature labor or any other issues of concern. That area will get bugged enough during labor!
  • 30 weeks and 2cm hoping we make it past the 34 week mark! These girls need to stay put till October!
  • At 34 weeks 4 days I was 1cm dilated and thinning.
  • My dr told me that after ur first pregnancy your always sitting at 1-2 cms. She said it really mean nothing.
    Is that anyone else's experience?
  • My best friend was 4cm and 80-90% effaced for 4 weeks and her baby was born two days past EDD. Cervical checks don't tell you anything unfortunately. I had membrane sweep THREE times with my first and it didn't help. I am refusing all cervical exams and sweeps because of the false hope lol.
  • Yeah I don't opt for any unnecessary cervical checks for that reason. False hope. I had a friend get her membranes stripped and still had to be induced. Had another go into labor not even 24 hours later. But, more often than not, I hear it doesn't help :/
