Well, this is "fun" *vent ahead*

so, my manager at work just had a talk with me and I got in trouble for using the bathroom "too much" and she understands I'm pregnant but I need to bring in a note.

What in the hell just happened?
Like I'm ready to leave. Just leave.

Ugh, I hate my job.

Well that's rude. You definitely don't need a note to say you have to go to the bathroom. I would ignore her and if she insists on being a pain in the ass, talk to your HR rep. That's ridiculous.
  • You can't fire someone for using the bathroom... And since when does a doctor need to approve of your rate of needing to go?
Agree with PP, go to HR that comes across as discrimination against you being pregnant.

  • Where do you work (what type of place)? Your manager needs to tread lightly, she can get herself into some big trouble. And what is your note supposed to say? That you're medically authorized to pee whenever you darn well please?

    I work at Walgreens (pharmacy)

Nope, nope, nope. Check your labor laws for your specific state. For example, in a 8+ hour shift in my state, hourly employees get a 1 hour meal break and 2 15 minute breaks. As long as your total bathroom breaks don't add up over 30 mins without you using those actual 15 min additionally, you're well within your rights to your personal break time- regardless of the reason. And that's without taking into account your meal break that, given my experience in corporate pharmacy, I'd guess you're not getting in its entirety.

This isn't even taking into consideration the fact that common sense says pregnant women have to use the bathroom more frequently. I'd call HR, who should go to your manager or the pharmacy supervisor directly to take care of it for you!

Edit words, also that's not the part I meant to quote!
  • Wow! That is ridiculous. I had to do this once in high school because the teachers would never let me go pee, and I kept getting infections. My mom called the principal and he said get a note and that will serve as her hallway pass and she will never have to ask to go. It worked out, but I was in HIGH SCHOOL! Definitely talk to HR. I would of told her to her face that in calling HR. I don't mess around with stuff like that.

  • That's ridiculous. I'm geniunely upset for you! I agree with PPs...talk to HR ASAP so they can straighten this lady out. I also love your idea about getting a note for 15 minutes of sitting time every hour. Then it's there if you need it and this woman can't say or do a darn thing. Good luck, and don't let her ruin your day. I just found out what a TW is...and it sounds like that's your TW story! ;)
  • I'm sorry you are having a hard time, uncaring bosses suck. From a business perspective you should get the doctors note even if it seems silly. While the legal rules vary if you are taking excessive bathroom trips it could be disciplinable. Not so good employees will sneak to the bathroom to use their phones etc. I'm guessing if your manager is a pharmacist they would have no idea what the legal rules are or how to handle the situation from an hr perspective. I wouldn't have the doctor write anything extra like breaks you don't need. If the doctors restrictions are unrealistic in your work environment you could be forced to take disability leave which you may or may not get paid for.

  • Echoing prior posters, wtf! That takes the cake for micromanaging!
  • I'm sure this is super childish, but that would make me want to pee on my chair and request a new one. Leave the wet chair outside the boss's office with a post it "Sorry, I tried to hold it since I take so many bathroom breaks. New chair please." :)

Ps- I wouldn't actually do it, but I'd be really offended if I were you!

  • What?!? I'm sorry your dealing with this nonsense!
  • This infuriates me for you. What a TW I would go over her head and get her in trouble. That's illegal. Or you can pee your pants and sue! Just jk! :) seriously go to her boss.
  • @NoelBird although I see where you are coming from, businesses should also care about their employees. It has been proven that business with happy employees are more productive and typically better off. Caring doesn't mean they have to provide you lunch or snacks or a game room (Google does) but simply being understanding and caring of employees needs goes a long way. Companies should and typically do consider these topics before hiring employees. If what they wanted was constant work, perhaps they should of invested in a self check out machine, that doesn't have needs (except when it breaks down). My DH works for a refinery, they are ridiculous on their rules there, no sitting down ever, no standing around doing nothing (even when there is nothing to do because they are waiting on permits) and missing days even if it's vacation counts against you and they will use that to lay you off, with the excuse of not needing you. AND even they get unlimited bathrooms breaks, without harassment. Think about it, it only makes sense! All I'm trying to say is, yes companies want profit and production but limiting a pregnant women's bathroom breaks, is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure if HR found out, they would not be happy with the manager. That's just my 2 cents though. I do however see your point on them possibly giving her hell and making her take disability leave. Companies will do tricky stuff like that, to get around people.

  • Maybe you should remind her that if that story got out, it'd be really bad PR for Walgreens- ugh. What an idiot!
I'm sorry you have the go through that. I'd go to HR- for sure.

    Uhm this.

Lmao but seriously, when I was in elementary school the teacher wouldn't let a girl go to the bathroom when she asked, so she straight peed herself on purpose in her chair. It got her point across.... Although as an adult I would never do this, it's the thought that came to my mind right away. Your boss sounds like a real b*tch! Hasn't she ever been pregnant!? Jeeze!!!

  • As someone in management, I definitely understand her need to perhaps check in with you to make sure everything is okay. As pps have said, excessive bathroom breaks and personal time can be considered a problem, even if you're pregnant. I've had agents sign out for basically an entire extra break so I check and make sure everything is fine and then just make sure they understand they shouldn't make a habit of it. You may want to contact HR if you haven't already for FML paperwork. They can write it up so that it includes extra bathroom breaks so you'll be protected

I agree with what everyone above says. Let us know what HR says and how it all goes.
  • What a beeyotch!!! I agree with PPs, that BS needs to be reported to HR. You should not have to bring in a note. Going to the bathroom a lot when pregnant is a well known symptom. I'm so mad for you!

  • Yes I think definitely she needs to be reported to HR. Don't let her get away with that. She sounds crazy! My dad is a pharmacist at rite aid and bought a chair for his two pregnant techs that work with him. So they could sit when needed. They are high counter chairs. You should be allowed to sit down for 10 min too at work! Let alonel pee when you need to. And its a wemon boss who you would think would understand... which makes it a lot worse! I commend you for keeping your cool!

I'm not saying it's right or wrong I was just trying to give some insight into the legal workings. It is important to know your actual rights so you can look out for yourself. Legally businesses have to provide a responsible accommodation for a person with a disability (which is how pregnancy is classified)if you cannot do your job because of a disability or you put unreasonable strain on your employer they legally do not have to keep you. Again I'm not saying that I agree with your boss out anything but I personally know I always try and look out for myself.

    HUH.

How does she have time to monitor your bathroom breaks?
  • I don't know what walgreens has in place for pregnancy. I would want to find out. This is why I think I need to let HR know and find out. I don't want this to blow out of control if that's now what she wanted it to be. She tried to tell me that we only had 3 people working today, and I make it difficult when I go to the bathroom. It's not my fault that the store is understaffed and you can't hire people.

I'm just lost and don't know what to do.

HR will be able to tell you if she was out of line or if there is a policy that validates her talk - as much as they are there for the business they are also there to make sure they don't get sued so they will be able to direct you more

  • @NoelBird - true, but using the bathroom often is a long stretch to being a disability. There are thousands of employers that deal with that. I know that when I'm not pregnant if I drink a bootleg of water I will have to pee at least 3 times in 1 hour. None of my employers have ever called that to my attention. I think management also very often over steps their boundaries thinking they won't be called on it. Yes, I do agree employees should be well aware of their rights. That is something that I throughly read through when I have a job. I want to know where I have protection.

  • Everyone at my job is ready to walk, we are short staffed always getting yelled at. Working 10 hour days and never getting a thanks. Everyone went from enjoying the job to hating it. I've been with walgreens 15 years and I'm just done. Wish I could quit BUT kinda need to pay bills, lol.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have a number to call tomorrow and voice my concerns.
  • Tell her you have digestive problems and have the runs, so if she wants to stop you from using the restroom often then she's gonna be cleaning up shit. Lol

  • Document what she said in a written notice to hr and keep a copy. Include the date, time, and exactly what she said. Then if they try to fire you or otherwise give you a hard time you can most probably sue the pants off them.

Thaaaaat explains it! Are you a pharmacist or tech? I'm a tech at another one of the big 3 chains, and trust me, my manager already knows that I won't listen to the corporate nonsense that we're not supposed to pee when we need to. I have a male manager though, so I'm wondering if he wants to avoid awkward conversations. Talk with HR and pee when you need to! If it's anything like my job you stand all day so be sure to sit when you need to, too!
