Baby Clothes - Asking Moms

FTM here. I get mixed answers about how much clothes I need. Most baby registry lists say something like 6-8 onesies. Someone donated me 14 NB onesies, and I bragged to my BFF and she huffed and said, that's not even close to enough. You'll go through them in 3 days. When I showed the pile to my mom, she was like, woah that's way too many. You don't need all that!
So I keep getting these extreme responses that I either don't have nearly enough or that I have too much. I am also getting other sizes, but not as stocked up yet.

What has been your experience?
Thanks

Re: Baby Clothes - Asking Moms

  • Im a FTM as well and I have tons of NB and 0-3 months clothes because my sister isnt having any more babies and literally gave me everything she had for my niece. I like to be way over prepared, so having a lot of clothes makes me feel better haha! Of course babies are going to go through some outfits changes in 1 day but all in all, I think you'll be fine with whatever you have!

  • IMO, 14 is more than plenty to start out with unless you never plan to do laundry!  If you have a baby that spits up a lot or you are just having a hard time keeping up with laundry, you can buy more.  I found that I was having to change my clothes almost as much as the baby so we were doing laundry on a very regular schedule.  For baby, I only changed his outfit when he was dirty, which meant that sometimes he went through a few outfits a day and sometimes he wore the same outfit 2 days in a row!

  • My in laws spoiled our Little girl, she is their first grand daughter. We have enough new born/0-3 month outfits to wear 1-2 per day. We were also gifted a ton of outfits and received hand me downs. I don't mind because I'll hold onto them for possible next girl if she's in fall / also give hand me downs to people I know in need.
I don't find what we have necessary, but I have no idea what is!
  • I'm a FTM as well and have been wondering the same thing. I have quite a bit of 0-3 months outfits and onesies, but very little newborn size.

I have been given the impression that ill need more footed sleepers and gowns more than anything. How many of those would you get in each size? I have like 2-3 newborn and maybe 4-5 0-3 month size.
  • My last baby was born early October in the north and he wore exclusively footy sleepers and gowns for the first few months (unless we were going out in public and I was dressing him up).  He was 7 lb 11 oz at birth and we just went w/ 0-3 month clothes.  I am not sure what an exact number would be because all of our clothes were also hand-me-downs and we had way, way too much and never wore most of them.  I think 8-10 would be a safe number to start with for 0-3 months.  I would only buy a very small amount of newborn clothes because they will outgrow that fast unless they are very small.

Mostly it's because the laundry machine in the building is huge and costs money so I was aiming at once a week (once in 5 days maybe). Baby clothes are so small I'd feel silly running a giant machine with just that.

I think if I pick up a few more I will get 0-3 month size.  I'm not too worried about newborn size because having GD, I don't really anticipate having a baby that will be in newborn size very long...and if she is, I can always pick up a couple when she's born.
  • I am also a FTM, I have been doing a lot of second hand shopping and have found this list very helpful.

  • As a mom of a kid who spit up constantly, I'd say 10 or so onesies/sleep'n'plays/outfits is a good start. 14 isn't too many either, since between spit up and diaper blowouts you may easily go through 2-3 outfits a day.

As far as sizing, don't go overboard on NB or 0-3 month size (read the weight guidelines on the tags as these vary). Most babies won't be in NB very long, so I'd stock up on 3-6 month size over anything much smaller. Though it doesn't hurt to have some 0-3; my 7 lb 11 oz boy didn't outgrow that size till 3 months.

Carter's and OskKosh tend to run smaller, as do their brands for Walmart and Target. The Children's Place runs a bit bigger, as does Macy's First Impressions brand. So what fits when might vary some.

  • You'll also find that no matter how many outfits you have, you will gravitate towards a few favorites that are either really soft, easy to take on/off, etc.

With NB clothes it could go either way...some babies are so big that they don't fit or aren't in them for long. 0-3 is probably a safer size to have more of.
  • They go through NB and 0-3 quickly. I found my son wore 3-6 month for a longer time. If your baby is tall, they will size up quicker in the sleepers with footies. One pieces and sleepers with footies are likely going to be the go to for the first several months as others have said. The other "cuter" outfits my son never really wore much so don't waste your money on a lot of these. I returned a lot of these and bought more practical clothing in larger sizes, up to 12 months bc I received so much NB and 0-3 as gifts. I would say a couple of outfits and the rest one pieces and sleepers would be good. Also, white onesies to go underneath each outfit if you are in a cool area and socks if there are no footies. Zutano booties are nice, they snap and stay on.
  • FTM here but I have 4 NB and 14 3month, both are a mix of footies and onesies. My plan is to see what baby is fitting in when she arrives and then get more as needed. My mom loves shopping for baby so if I need more she can pick up stuff for me. I don't want to over buy NB because hubby and I are both tall so I'm expecting a long baby
  • I'm a ftm and we got tons of 0-3 onesies, sleepers, and little pants from yard sales and hand me downs. And several in NB as well. And those miraculous gowns that I've heard are life savers for night time diaper changes. I know for the first couple of weeks I'll want to keep laundry doing to a minimum because our laundry room is down stairs in the basement and I don't wanna have to deal with the stairs while trying to recover, so having those extras for LO will definitely come in handy if she's a spitter upper or if there are any diaper "incidents."
  • for clothes we have hand-me-downs from my nephew plus what we got as shower gifts so we have a lot-- actually too much! that being said we don't have much newborn stuff and i am glad we don't because according to my ultrasound yesterday baby already weighs 5 lbs 11 oz (35 weeks tomorrow) so i don't expect he'll be in newborn for long and maybe not at all! for the types of clothes we seem to have a ton of short-sleeve onesie plus pants outfits and not so many sleepers/one pieces. as PP have mentioned if i were going to buy more (at this point we will make do with what we have), i would focus more on the footed sleepers/one pieces with long sleeves.
  • I didn't register for clothes yet somehow I ended up with tons lol! Not only will shower guests bring outfits anytime someone comes to visit they will bring clothes for the baby. They're so many cute choices it's hard to resist.

With my son (Dec 2012), outside of a few outfits to meet people he wore mostly white onsies and pajamas. Since it was winter even if we did go out he would have on a bundler or snowsuit so no one saw how cute he was dresses anyway. He didn't start "wearing" clothes until maybe the spring (3 months) when you could actually see them and he didn't just lay there lol. As far as sizes I would skip newborn bc unless baby is born small 0-3 is sufficient and lasts longer. I had about 2 weeks worth (14) of onsies, footed pjs, socks and leggings bc i refused to wash laundry every day. And if I needed something between online shopping and hubby I was covered :-)
  • For those without any newborn clothes, be careful.  I was told that newborn were a waste of money so only got 0-3 size and DS was swimming in them for months until he grew enough.  He was 7lb, 5oz so average size and didn't have any trouble growing.  A month after he was born he was still swimming in the outfit I got as a take home outfit for him.

This. Dd was 6lbs 9 oz and was in nb forever and 0-3 until she was 4/5 months. Ds was 8lbs 2 oz but only 19.5 inches so he was also in nb for at least 3-4 weeks (which doesn't sound that long unless you are doing laundry every three days!). 0-3 was swimming on them so much that they would work their arms out of the arm holes through the neck holes.

I would pick up more nb. Don't wash it if you have a big long baby so you can return it.
  • DD was born at 6 lbs 6 ounces, and hank goodness someone gave us some preemie sizes hand me downs. Because she swam in NB and 0-3 clothes. She was only 7 lbs at her 4 week appointment, so she was in the smaller sizes for quiet a bit of time.

This time, I'm a little more cautious. I'm waiting till my growth scan to find out if DS will be bigger before washing any of the NB onesies I have, but I have about 3 sleepers and 8 onesies in NB and everything else is 0-3.

I definitely think I need more. Fortunately, Amazon and Carters both ship quickly, so i can always order more once he's born.

As for styles of clothing, gowns and sleepers were what DD lived in for the first 4-5 months unless we went out somewhere. Especially considering the cool weather.
