Trying to Get Pregnant

Honest question

Ok. I have a really stupid question.... I think I know the answer but I have to ask anyway! Feel free to flame away....
Can you have a period if you haven't ovulated? Don't you have to ovulate to have a period?? After all, that's shedding the unused egg.... There was some debate over this somewhere and I just want to make sure my grasp on things is correct.
Man I feel dumb!

  • You don't technically have a period because periods are the result of progesterone thickening the uterine lining to prepare for a pregnancy and shedding that lining when implantation doesn't occur. With anovulatory cycles, you have what's called estrogen breakthrough bleeding.

  • Fascinating!! Thank you guys I had no idea what an anovulatory cycle was :)
So you would know you had one based on your temps right? No sharp drops/raises in temps? You just have bleeding at some point to shed the extra lining but no egg then a new cycle starts? Man bodies are weird.
  • @hunnybunny17 thanks! I read the article and it was really helpful. I think I've had quite a few anovulatory cycles in the past, likely due to being overweight, too stressed and a crappy diet. However, once my bbt and opks arrive then I can confirm what's going on. :/
  • Your period is more than shedding an egg, it's shedding the lining of your uterus. So, yes, you can still have a period even if you haven't ovulated. That said, not ovulating can also mean you don't produce the hormones needed to prompt a period, but that is actually an issue that can lead to your uterine lining becoming too thick. So, it can go either way.

So interesting! I had no idea how much I didn't know about fertility.... I thought I was really knowledgeable after donating my eggs! I was so wrong.

Yes, yes, and yes. Usually you can tell even without temping because they are longer than what your normal cycles are.

Omg. Well now I'm wondering if I've been having them.... Only rarely do I get the "egg white" cm. I never knew what it was!!! It freaked me out and I thought it was so gross! Haha I thought it was ejaculate... O.o So ignorant. Sigh.
Recently my cycles have been getting longer each time, and no signs of fertile cm so I'm really curious now. I guess I'll find out soon. Man I'm starting to realize how badly I need to get healthy! :(
Here's hoping your wait is over soon!!

    Edit: no text block??

You can ovulate and not get EWCM. A lot of women only get watery CM. Watery is still considered fertile CM.

Well I don't get that often either... At most it's the stage before that, the creamy/lotion consistency :/ Though I guess technically that could be fertile?

I just bought it, looking forward to a good read :)
  • ****previous pregnancy mentioned*****

I've never had ewcm. I get watery cm for a couple days, tops. Otherwise mostly creamy. I have to check internally, because i tend to be somewhat "dry".
I've been pregnant before, so I promise it didn't affect anything.
    Happy reading!
