  • I don't think it's terrible, kinda cute to me. I don't really like the nickname but whatever you want.

  • If you're a die hard fan of To Kill a Mockingbird, I guess go for it. Otherwise, I would have a hard time justifying it.

  • Lol I don't watch Pretty Little Liars. I love that it is different but not too different from a common name like Bradley and doesn't sound made up to me at all. Thinking of Radley James, Radley Vincent, or Radley Neiland (all family middle names). The last thing on my mind are trends haha and I feel like a nickname like Rad would just come naturally since it's the first part of the name.
  • You asked ;)

As long as you can live with the fact that these are some of the things that people will first think of when associating a name with your child, then go for it. It's your baby...you can name them whatever you want :)

  • It did ask. And thanks for your input!
  • It sounds like you and your husband are really into the name. I say go for it.
It matters more that you and your husband like the name, not what a bunch of Internet strangers like.
Now, these internet strangers will tell you exactly what they think, so just like in real life, some will like it and some won't. It's just that in real life not everyone will honestly voice their opinion on your kids name in person.
But in the end, you should name your kid what you and your husband like, not what the majority of people like,

  • Reminds me of the psych ward in pll. Otherwise it's cute.
  • I don't love it but I would appreciate it as a lit reference. But please please no with the nickname Rad. That is far too trendy and yuck to me.

  • Thanks monkey! Yes we do like it and Just so everyone is clear, I'm not naming my kid after a character in a book that I read in high school, because I'm a "die-hard To Kill a Mockingbird" fan (which I'm not)... I heard the name, not associating it with anything, and LOVED it.

If you and your H like it, that's all that matters.

That being said, it makes me think of Boo Radley from To Kill A Mokingbird. Not a fan. I feel like you mine as well should just go with Bradley.
I think of Boo Radley as well!
  • Haha I'm not a "die-hard To Kill a Mockingbird fan". And I'm not naming my kid after a character in a book that I read in high school. I heard the name, not associating it with anything, and just loved the name as itself. If I do think of that character, I think of the name Boo, as that's how he's referred to and addressed throughout the book. I don't automatically think of the character's last name :) thanks for the input!

I think it is kind of cute and I think people would get used to it quickly. I wouldn't personally use it bc of the TKaM reference.
  • I thought Boo Radley too.
  • Pretty sure even if it's not your intent, people are going to associate it with the book and assume you named him after Boo Radley. It's just too famous not to. It'd be like naming your kid Hermione and expecting people not to associate it with Harry Potter.

    Exactly.

    I'd side eye it.
I think everyone will respond with, Bradley?
  • Thanks for the responses! If this baby is a boy, he will be named Radley. Not because of a book, but because both my husband and I love it. I'm not concerned at all with the possible confusion between Bradley-Radley. That happens with lots of names and one correction for the people who didn't hear it correctly the first time would fix that issue ;)
It's starting to become more popular, so a character in a book will not be it's only association pretty soon!

I apologize in advance if you are hurt by my response (but you asked for opinions). Personally, I'm not a fan of the name. It sounds made up, too trendy, and people will associate it with Boo Radley from "To Kill a Mockingbird" (that's immediately what I thought when I read the name). It strikes me as a type of Hollywood celebrity baby name like "Apple" and "Jagger" that people feel are "cool" but don't consider that their children may want to be taken seriously as an employed adult someday. With that being said, I am a complete stranger who has no bearing on your life decisions and happiness whatsoever, and I think the most important thing is that you and your SO LOVE the name you choose for your child. If you are convinced, then go for it. Your and your partner's happiness with your choice is the only thing that matters. Best wishes :)
  • Michelle, thanks for your opinion. We will!
  • Not hurt at all! Like you said, our thoughts on the name is all that matters! People can love one name and another can absolutely hate it at the same time! It isn't a big deal in the slightest.

Lol I don't see the association fading anytime soon. It's already been 55 years since the book was published and that's literally the first thing I thought about. But like I said, if yall are happy with it, then by all means go for it!
Agreed. As one of the most enduring pieces of American literature in our culture, I'd say that association will stick. But if you're happy, that's really all that matters!

  • When I see Radley, I think The mental hospital on pretty little liars, I like the name but couldn't ever use it myself.
  • I like this name a lot actually. Kind of reminds me of my friends son's name which is Radford.
  • You seem pretty set on the name, but you must've wanted to hear opinions since you posted.
I hate it. I agree with another comment that Radley seems like some made up name meant to be cool, but isn't.
I also first thought this was for a girl, since it has a girly sounding "ley" ending, like Hadley, trending for girls.

  • I also assumed Radley was for a girl and cringed a little. While not my favorite, it's slightly more fitting for a boy.
While it's important to like the name you choose for your little one, it's also important that you don't saddle him with a name he's likely to hate growing up. He's going to have to be Radley for his whole life, for better or worse. At least give him a normal middle name and maybe he can go by that if he chooses.

  • I personally wouldn't chose it but it's not a horrible name. I watch PLL and I didn't even think of that show when I read the name Radley. I also didn't think of the book. You and your husbands opinion is all that really matters. I dislike my name and my name is very simple/common.

Honestly, I think it's terrible. It's made up and the nick name is plain funny.

    "Just call me Rad!"

    Lol. Sorry, no.

    Edited for grammar.

Are you saying my thoughts aren't all that matters when choosing a name for our son? That's pretty silly. We are already set on the name, and I still love hearing other's opinions! Just people few hate it does not mean I'm going to change mind. People always have different opinions names!
