Advice for 3 hour glucose test!! Please!!

I had the one hour test yesterday and have to go for the 3 hour tomorrow at 830. Should I eat before they told me don't eat for three hours before the 1 hour test the nurse said that can effect my results so now I'm getting mixed answrs and I am confused any tips are appreciated!

  • I was told to fast for 8 hours before the 3 hour test. The first blood draw they do is to get your fasting numbers. I really would think they would have talked to you about eating.

  • I was told not to eat for 8-12 hours prior to the test. I wouldn't eat. You don't want your numbers to be skewed.
  • Call your doctor. Different people get different instructions.
  • I go in tomorrow too at the same time and was told not to eat anything after midnight.

This.. I just had mine today
  • Ok my doctor said don't eat 3 hours prior to the 1 hour I just woke up and went. The nurse said maybe because I didn't it was elevated so eat something light before. I'm just gonna not and hope for the best I was really upset it was up yesterday
  • My 3 hour isn't until 11 am so my doc said just make sure and eat before 7am if I needed to.
  • I had mine at 8:30 am too and was told not to eat after midnight as well.  I passed my 3 hour if it makes you feel better!

  • Ok. I just took the 3 hour 2 weeks ago. It is a FASTING test, and that is extremely important to get accurate results. I couldn't eat 8-10 hours before the test. Also for 3 days before I had to add in addition to my regular diet 16 oz glass of orange juice and 2 slices of bread or a cup of cooked rice. The morning of the test I was also limited to sips of water. OP, you can only eat right before the 1 hour. Are you confused? All doctors give strict instructions before the 3 hour

  • I was told not to eat after midnight and appointment is at 8:00. I failed my first yesterday by five points. :(( Going next week for the three hour.
  • Well mine did not give strict instructions so no snarky remarks are necessary. I was trying to get advice based on people that have been through this. I can't search on my phone and don't have access to a computer at the moment. I have googled and I got conflicting advice as there are "different standards".

To everyone with tips thank you so much hoping for the best!
  • It would probably be a good idea to call you doctor if you were not provided with instructions.
  • I'm taking the 1 hour next Tuesday, and I was given a slip of paper with instructions, including not to eat starting at midnight for the 9am test, even though it seems most people aren't told to fast before the 1 hour.  Different offices have different rules, but they're looking at the results assuming you followed the rules.  Call and ask for your doc's specific rules, and follow them.

Please call your doctor. They are truly the only one who you should be asking this question.
Better to call them and get concrete instructions than have to redo the test because of invalid results.

I don't see how you were not given either verbal or written instructions.

Also, you can search on mobil, as seen by the visual aid below.

This. You can too search on your phone. And you can call your doctor from it too.
  • I had the 3 hr test today. I was told to fast after 10pm the night before but had to add extra carbs for 3 days prior.

I felt really nauseous after the drink, probably because it was on an empty stomach and my stomach felt a little crampy but it subsided fairly quickly and it was just a matter of waiting for each blood draw. I alternated arms for blood draws but by the 3rd and 4th time, I was more sensitive. When I left after 3 hours, I felt foggy and tired and had a mild headache so I treated myself to panera bread and had a nap!

My dr has wifi so I brought my tablet and watched bachelor in paradise ;)

No doctor has ever given a medical test without instructions. I got a printout of the do's/don'ts for my one hour test. Anything longer than the 1 hour is generally considered a fasting test, I was directed to fast 12 hours prior to the 2 hour test with my first pregnancy.

You need to call your doctor and get clarification in what they want you to do. Guessing in this instance is not good enough. Please tell me this is MUD because I just can't even with this nonsense.
  • I am despising doing the 3 hour glucose test! I failed the 1 hour by 4 points. I'm supposed to go on this diet for 3 days then go to the appt st 8 30 am next week on an empty stomach. What's the 3 hour process like? My veins suck, how many blood tests do I need to get in the 3 hour time period? Not looking forward to having both my arms black and blue for days after... Ugh!

....I get that everyone is going through them now, and there's some confusion with these tests, but this is the fourth Glucose test thread floating on the top 3 pages of boards alone. There's only so many things that can be said besides feelings on them (they suck, I'm sick, it wasn't so bad) or how to prepare (eat or don't eat? Can i move around, what should I bring), to how you did (I passed, I failed, I'm scared, oh no). I get it, I do, but the horse is in rig-amorous now, there's nothing more to be said that can't be said in this thread or the following three. Best of luck on all your tests, remember a fail isn't the end all be all!

Please use the search function or simply google.

Edited to change my number 4 to a number 3, because y'know"counting.
  • Call your doc. My midwife said they have women fast the night before foe the three hour, and also carbo load for several days, too.

  • No carbs. Protein protein protein. Carbs and sugars are synonymous, you're begging to fail if you carb load anywhere near this test

Not true. The day of and night before- yes. However the reason many doctors give you a specific higher carb diet to follow for 3 days leading up to the 3 hour test is because if your body isn't used to eating a lot of carbs and sugar then you have a better chance of getting a false negative because your body will freak out.

If you're given specific instructions, and you should get them, follow them. The doctors know what they are doing.

  • Update- I failed the 1 hour & went on the awful carb heavy diet 3 days prior to the test ( Saturday Sunday Monday). I had to have cereal milk and a slice of toast half a fruit, lunch was a sandwich ( or rice bowl or pasta bowl) more milk, cookies or dessert dinner meat veggies baked potato dessert more milk slice of bread ... I stopped eating at 9 pm Monday. Went in on Tuesday ( empty stomach first thing in the am) and passed the 3 hour. I really thought id fail bc I ate so many carbs for days prior and think this was a trick to get me to fail too!

Just trust the instructions and hope for the best would be my advice. Yes it sucked and being there for 3 hours sucked and the blood draws sucked but it ll e over before you know it
  • I'm not gonna touch the repeat posts aspects of this but I will say to the PP'S saying that all offices give specific instructions that they're lucky but that's not always the case. I wasn't told anything for my 1 hr, just given a lab order and told to bring it to the walk in lab during week 28. I did get a phone call saying I failed by 6 points (I'm guessing having lunch an hour before the test didn't help but they didn't say not to) and that I needed to take the three hour. For that one all they told me over the phone that it was three hours long and that I shouldn't eat after midnight the night before but that's it. Nobody mentioned any carb loading etc. Frankly until I read this I was going to go extra easy on carbs for the next few days just in case I have GD. So it can be pretty confusing and reading threads like this is useful as a starting point for questions for my doctor.
  • I have heard varied responses for the one-hour (I was told to fast, but others have been told eating is okay), but I am fairly certain that the three-hour has stricter guidelines and requires fasting.
