Breast Pumps

Hi ladies. I'm probably jumping the gun here but I've started thinking about breast pumps. My insurance provides one free one and I have several to choose from. I've done some research and narrowed it down to two: the Spectra 2 Hospital Strength Pump and the Medela Pump in Style Advanced pump. I like that the Spectra is a closed system vs. Medela's open system. That feature almost made the decision a no-brainier for me until I noticed that parts for Spectra are harder to find. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Re: Breast Pumps

  • Spectra is my choice. Closed system and so quiet.

  • I'm going with the Medela.

  • I have a Medela PSA and I'm planning to get another one through my insurance as my original is over 4 years old.

  • I have a medela and love it!!!
  • I'm a medela user and love it. I just looked up the spectra out of curiosity and it's very cool looking! Has good reviews on Amazon. However, I read in several reviews that because the shields/connectors are one piece that you can't use a hands free pumping bra with it. If that's truly the case, that would be a deal breaker for me. If you're going back to work full time, you don't want to sit around staring at a wall for 20 mins every 3 hours BC you have to hold the pump on. I used a Hands free bra and was able to catch up on charting, play on my phone, or even eat lunch while pumping.
  • I looked into this and found that there are a few bras that work with it. I saw a review from just last month and the Spectra rep suggested the PumpEase bra, as many Spectra customers love it.
  • I love my madella. And parts are so easy to find and clean.
  • Everyone I've talked to has said Madella and it's also recommended in Baby Bargains.
  • So, instead of starting a new thread on breast pumps, can I just jump in here with a question for STM? Should you have a breast pump before you even start to try breast feeding? Or wait to get it once things get going?
