What and How to Store Baby Items

What baby items are you keeping and what you are getting rid of? For the big items how are you storing them? I need to pack up her infant car seat and base and the baby einstein entertainer and of course my husband threw out the boxes that i wanted to keep.

Re: What and How to Store Baby Items

  • I am keeping about half of our girl clothes, and donating the other half, keeping everything gender neutral, those are all going to be in totes with labels. As far as the big items, I am using large clear plastic bags to help with dust and dirt control, they are going on shelves we made in the basement.

We looked at everything we needed to store, and then made the shelves, since everything is odd shaped. (SO also threw out all the boxes that I wanted to store everything in) BOO MEN! Haha.

  • I kept absolutely everything until I knew the sex of baby #2, which will be our last, and then I just went through it all and donated stuff I didn't like, or that was seasonally inappopriate (like, baby #2 won't be able to wear the 6 month size Xmas clothes when he's 3 weeks old...or the 3 month Halloween outfit when he's 10 months old...or the 6 month snowsuit, etc).

Car seat, base, etc I double bagged in garbage bags and put in the garage.  Things that fit went into plastic rubbermaid-like containers and got stacked in the garage with labels.  Of course, as soon as I spent the time to pack away carefully the infant seat, swing, etc in the garage, I got a BFP...so we haven't taken a lot of time to get much more organized, but basically yeah...garbage bags, plastic bins, garage....held onto everything until the bitter end...

  • Honestly I haven't put anything into 'storage' because as soon as we had enough to put away I found out we were expecting #2.

We are keeping the majority of things from DS to use for DD.  We were team green with DS so all of the big stuff, and most of the early 0-3 month clothing is gender neutral.  I am going through DS's clothes and what is clearly boy (mommy's little man, handsome, handsome like daddy onsies) will be either pitched if DS spit up on them or will be donated.

This will be our last baby, so as DD out grows things (either clothing or gear) they will either be pitched or donated.  (I HATE doing garage sales).

  • I'm keeping everything for future babies, the only things I have thrown out are clothes that are really badly stained.  I had a few things given to me second hand from my best friend, and I was so grateful, I hope I can do the same for someone else when we're done having kids.

For oddly shaped items like the infant car seat, I double bag them in heavy duty trashbags and then label the outside of the bag.

For clothes, I started keeping a plastic tote in her closet.  Whenever she grows out of something, it gets washed and then put right into the tote.  When the tote is full, I label where we began and left off in the age/size of the clothes, and then the tote goes in the attic.
