That and I don't think it's coincidence that someone who started a different mud thread happens to be a white knight on this one... Yet the usual white knight suspects are no where to be seen.
(I am sure they will appear now.....)

Okay. I wasn't going to join but...

    1. I wasn't required to see a genetic counselor.

    2. I am not advanced maternal age but had the panorama. It took 8 days to get my results. That doesn't seem like a backlog to me.

    3. Before you all jump on me for having the test - my husbands aunt and uncle, so my MILs brother AND sister both have downs. BOTH.
Yes my doctor explained that it was indirect so less likely and I shouldn't worry. But I did.

So what. I don't see the issue of someone getting these tests. It's not like her getting the test takes away the opportunity for someone else to get it.

That being said I wouldn't pay this amount of money to find out the sex early. I am cheap. That is crazy.

It sounds like you had a reason to get the test, and you weren't doing it for the sole purpose of finding out sex, so none of what PPs said was really applicable to your situation.

Like I said before, the backlog I was talking about was in the doctors office, not the laboratory. Under my insurance which is the predominant one in my area, you are required to see one before the test. Also, I can only see a specified list of doctors which creates limited resources.

  • There is no evidence of backlog at any significant level with these tests. It's all theoretical. Just like in theory ultrasounds can be backloged.

Bless your heart. Even if you quote yourself... It defeats the point. The point of quoting someone is so that they can not change their post later when they take back what they said, change their mind, or whatever thing they decide. If you quote yourself you can still edit both posts

  • And actually the more low risk women who take these tests the better the tests become and the better our understanding of the results become.

So you're advocating that low risk women spend money on tests they don't need so laymen understand results better? Doctors and laboratories that provide these tests have a pretty in-depth understanding of these tests as it is. So you make no sense to me. If people are impatient, have problems with impulse control and can't wait a few weeks they should just come out and say it. What they should not do is make up reasons to justify their lack of self restraint.
But why does this board care SO MUCH about what people choose to do w/ their pregnancy and money?  You all talk about sparing the feelings of other women, but damn - anyone dares to say they want to find out the sex of their baby or dare to ask a question that was asked a week ago- out come the pitchforks and stakes!

    Oh, the irony.

Well here's where you're wrong, because I was specifically told that my results were delayed due to high volumes. It took over 3 weeks to get my results in, when the timeline is usually 7-10 days. There are so few labs that do each kind of test, more tests doesn't equal more resources to handle them. But please tell us all more about how you're an expert at this.
I am asking because I really don't know... Is this the only thing they process?? Or is the backlog also caused by other types of tests?

No, I'm advocating that this board lay off castigating low risk women for getting NIPTs.

  • Oh and before I peace out I just want to say that even as someone who presents two of the risk categories for testing (AMA and downs in the family) I am STILL okay with low risk women taking the test (even if it's because they are mostly excited to find out sex). Bottom line: these people don't affect me. Nor did they affect my recent NIPT.

Nobody has castigated anyone. Stop making a difference in opinion sound like we're apart of the Salem witch trials. A tad bit melodramatic if you ask me.
I still find your points advocating and excusing the need for instant gratificatiction meritless and rather naive.

Well, for newbies who lurk for awhile, seeing how open and accepting you all are of new people who may (oh no!!) post an innocent but repetive question, I'm sure they'll want to come back and post about more serious issues.

The evidence is very subjected, I'll give you that...it depends entirely what insurance you have, the test administered and the area you live in. Where I am, my insurance only covers one test, and that test is only sent to 1 lab for processing (university of Washington), and actually takes over a month to complete because I had to go in between 12-13 weeks for a scan and blood draw, then come in again between 16-18 weeks for another blood draw. I don't get any of my results until my second sample has been tested. Oh, and this one test I was given does not give you results on your fetus' sex..so if I hadn't had some concerns on genetics and just wanted to find out if I'm having a boy or girl, I'd have been out of luck. There is nothing wrong with finding out the sex early if you want. That is why many suggested op go to a boutique ultrasound diagnostics location to do it. There are probably several in her area and will be a lot cheaper than getting an unnecessary chromosomal test. Also, I highly doubt those tests will be "standard" coverage by insurance because I think they recognize what a cash cow it is..
