My doctor hasn't really recommended these, but I heard you can find out the baby's gender early with them. Can I still get them even if my doctor didn't say I needed them? I really want to find out if I'm Team Blue or Team Pink ASAP!!
The tests are used to determine if your baby is at risk for any abnormalities. It is really disgusting posting here suggesting you want one done just to find out the sex. Good luck with your healthy baby.

Why is it disgusting? I don't understand. Is there a risk to the baby for doing the test?

Qfp. Because many people get the tests and are waiting to determine if they will have a negative outcome, if the child will be carriers of a defect, etc. It is very blase to say you want to find out the sex asap.

It's disgusting or blase to want to know my baby's gender because other people might have genetic problems? What does one have to do with the other? If it's not any risk to my baby and I'm not causing someone else to have a negative test result, why does it matter?

Good luck teaching your child empathy! Good luck on healthy baby
Because it is selfish and inconsiderate. People DREAM about nothing more than having a healthy baby. And some don't get that wish. You throwing it in their faces with your "gender" excitement is just plain rude. You should be ashamed of yourself, but you probably won't.

It's rude to really want to know my baby's gender because some people that I don't know might have unhealthy babies? This really doesn't make sense to me. Can you please explain?

This post really rubs me the wrong way. You would be getting that test for the wrong reasons. It's not that hard to wait a few more weeks to find out, in fact that's how most people do it. Some people are high risk and are sick over waiting the results.. In fact I had a terrible scan and am just hoping my baby makes it here alive. But that's not the only reason why this post upsets me.. It more upsets me that people are abusing these tests in order to find out the sex because they can't wait a few extra weeks. If you were concerned about your babies health and found out the sex as a bonus, it would be a different story.
Baby #3 due February. Dx with Spina Bifida Myelo "good things are coming down the road, just don't stop walking"
Sigh... I'll say this, then I'm leaving. Say the situation were reversed. And your baby had a health issue found through this testing. Wouldn't it be nice to know you could turn to an ENTIRE GROUP of supportive ladies offering advice, thoughts and prayers? Instead, you're basically saying IDGAF to everyone else. So... IDGAF to you. Hope for your baby's sake you have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

When did I say I don't care about people whose babies have health issues? I just don't understand how it affects them if I find out my baby's gender early. Nobody has been able to explain to me how it hurts those people if I get this test to find out my baby's gender.
To answer your question talk to your doctor. Mine didn't mention any genetic testing nor having an NT scan and I was a bit confused by that since it seems to be fairly common practice. She said that with no risk factors it was completely unnecessary to have either done. My insurance only covers what is medically necessary so I opted out. Just thankful I'm not at high risk!
@housecow There's nothing wrong with you being excited about finding out the sex of your baby. However, these tests are typically recommended for women 35 or older or for those who have a risk of chromosomal abnormalities. Your doctor probably did not recommend them because you don't fall into those categories. It is also likely that your insurance will not cover these highly expensive labs if there's not a risk factor. I had them done because I am 40, so the risk of abnormalities is much higher, but I admit I was also excited to have the extra bonus of finding out the sex.
This chromosomal test you are talking about is specifically for couples who are at a risk for not having a healthy baby and yes it can also give you the sex of the embryo. To say that you just want to get it for the purpose of knowing the sex part is what people are calling rude and inconsiderate. Yeah you may not know or care about other people's babies that you don't know but those women are on this board. Me included. And you're asking for an opinion from those women. And these tests are expensive since they are not covered under insurance. If you truly are pregnant then just wait till you hit 16 weeks and find out then. Have some patience. You have a healthy baby and that's all you should be worried about.

I am 35 and my doctor recommended the Maternit21 chromosomal test because of my age. However, i still had to get a preauthorization from my insurance company. Otherwise, i would be stuck with the bill, which, I understand is pretty hefty. So you won't just decide by yourself if you are getting the test or not... And no one would pre-authorize it just to find out the baby's sex a little earlier. With that being said, it is ok to ask a question and it would be ok if we could all be a little nicer to each other... Lord knows all of us have had some tough months recently... Good luck!
It is not a sex test. It is a test for genetic abnormalities.
For a much cheaper price tag, you can get an early u/s at a boutique place if that's your style, or you can wait for your medically necessary anatomy scan at 18-22wks.
On second thought, you should ask our OB if you can have the "gender test" done. I'm sure they need something to joke/roll their eyes about in the back office.
Eta: this is a fantastic time to start practicing patience. Pregnancy, l&d, parenthood... All require massive amounts of patience. This is just a drop in the ocean.
OP, as someone who waited anxiously for these results because I was worried about passing on a genetic issue, the SEX (different than gender but I assume you know this and were just seeing how many times you could say it before being corrected) was the last thing I was concerned with. Your doctor probably didn't mention the test to you because you are probably healthy and therefore low risk for the conditions that test is meant to detect. If you want to spend potentially thousands of dollars because you're too impatient to wait another few weeks, that's your call. Keep in mind the more people who get those tests done just for curiosity's sake or because they're selfishly trying to determine their baby's sex early, the longer it takes for those of us with serious medical concerns to get OUR samples looked at and results back. But you probably think that's not your problem either.

Here's another perspective that might help you understand from a different angle. I'm going to be 34 when baby is born so I inquired about the testing with my insurance over the phone. I had to speak with someone who specifically specializes in chromosomal/genetic areas. He asked me briefly about my risk factors and then explained to me that if I would like to go on with the testing, I would need to meet with a specialist doctor to gather as much info as possible first which might take time since the office had a backlog. Since I wouldn't be 35, my insurance would not cover it. We decided my best course of action would be to have the standard 16 week blood test (does not test for sex) and if that came back indicating something is wrong we could go in to do the more accurate test you are talking about ( which would be covered at that point by insurance). Now do you see how many medical professional's time and resources I would be wasting if I was doing all this to find out sex? From the guy on the phone to the doctors, etc. and adding to the already existing backlog? All to find out the sex? It just seems a little selfish.
You can find out the sex easily at 14 weeks through an elective ultrasound. Most places will do them for around $100 which is less than you would pay to have this test done since you have no risk factors and your insurance won't cover it most likely.
My doctor hasn't really recommended these, but I heard you can find out the baby's gender early with them. Can I still get them even if my doctor didn't say I needed them? I really want to find out if I'm Team Blue or Team Pink ASAP!!
There isn't a test to determine the gender. That's something that your child won't know for years to come. The reason your doctor didn't recommend the genetic testing is because there's no reason for you to have it done. Those tests are for women with fetuses at risk for chromosomal abnormalities. They are very expensive if you choose to do it unnecessarily.
The tests are used to determine if your baby is at risk for any abnormalities. It is really disgusting posting here suggesting you want one done just to find out the sex. Good luck with your healthy baby.
Why is it disgusting? I don't understand. Is there a risk to the baby for doing the test?
It's not disgusting. Don't let other people's nasty comments deter you from what you want to do. I just had my bloodwork done for the panorama test this morning and I can't wait to find out the gender! Obviously I want to know if my baby has any risks (not that it would make a difference) . It's simple blood work and if you are willing to pay for it then do it! Safer than ultrasounds in my opinion.
Posts like these are why I lurk and refrain from commenting how I really feel. I don't think someone who truly understands what this testing is for would ask such a careless question. It's nice for you that you are obviously not of advanced maternal age and/or at risk for certain disorders, which would be why your doctor hasn't recommended this type of testing. Yes the testing is simple and straight forward on your end, but without calling your ethics and "gender" issues into question I can answer why it may be a bad idea. This testing isn't done purely to determine sex, the sex is listed as they test for extra chromosomes that could point to a problem with baby. There is also, among the other great point brought up by PP, a risk of false positive. Is learning the "gender" of your baby a couple weeks early worth the risk of a possible false positive and months of unnecessary worry and concern because you're impatient?
So when exactly are women allowed to be excited about gender around here? Only at the 20 week anatomy scan? But ultrasounds were not developed primarily to determine gender. They were developed to detect defects. Gender is a bonus ... Kinda like ...light bulb moment...these blood tests.
Moreover, should women even express excitement over the gender reveal at the anatomy scan when SOME women have to get the scan for critical diagnostic purposes? Their excitement over sex anatomy could be seen as...what was the word used above? "Disgusting"? to those women who are needing it for more serious reasons.
And I am very sorry if this sentiment has already been posted. I didn't go through all 100 (give or take) pages of your surely scintillating board to see if I was expressing a duplicate thought.

Also the 20 week scan is standard for everyone so your argument doesn't apply.

You argument doesn't apply because the 20 week ultrasound hasn't always been standard for everyone. I wouldn't be surprised if eventually these blood tests become standard like the ultrasounds are now.

Did you miss everything above about medical resources, doctors time, backlog for moms who actually need it, etc.? Maybe one day the tests will be standard but they are not right now. This is not a difficult concept.

There can be backlogs in ultrasounds too. Your squeee sex reveal ultrasound is taking time and resources away from someone who who needs to check for genetic abnormalities because of certain risk factors.
This is immaterial because there aren't backlogs in the NITPs (they are administered by quite a few companies) and there aren't backlogs in ultrasounds, in the sense that people should refrain from doing either, especially if ordered to do so by a medical professional.
So everyone needs to take a large chill pill about NITPs, who gets them, and why.

How it works under my insurance, you have to see a doctor who specializes in genetics before the test. That is where the backlog occurs. Plus you are just flat out wasting his or her time.
The elective ultrasounds are boutique offices that do not do anatomy scans. No need to worry about taking away resources from anyone.
2. I am not advanced maternal age but had the panorama. It took 8 days to get my results. That doesn't seem like a backlog to me.
3. Before you all jump on me for having the test - my husbands aunt and uncle, so my MILs brother AND sister both have downs. BOTH. Yes my doctor explained that it was indirect so less likely and I shouldn't worry. But I did.
So what. I don't see the issue of someone getting these tests. It's not like her getting the test takes away the opportunity for someone else to get it.
That being said I wouldn't pay this amount of money to find out the sex early. I am cheap. That is crazy.
