Infertility

One embryo - need reassurance.

Hi ladies!

I am new to the bump and have been reading all of your amazing stories and would appreciate your advice.

My husband and I just went through our first cycle of IVF ( I am 40) and had 3 failed IUIs prior. Similar to the story below, they collected 17 eggs, out of which only 10 were mature, all were fertilized but only 7 became embryos. We did the pGD testing as well, only 4 were able to be tested, and after all was done with PGd, we were told we just had one healthy embryo. I was shocked, crushed and optimistic at the same time. Without the PGD we would have 4 embryos but with the risk of abnormalities.

I have been trying to stay grateful that it was our first ( and will be our last, it is just too expensive ) and even though we did not get the numbers we wanted, one is considered a success. I know many women who go through this and end up with zero. But, it is very difficult to not think of the odds by having just one..but we are taking it day by day, and I wake up everyday being positive.

Due to PGD, it was frozen and we will be doing a transfer in early September, I can't even think of the defrosting risks...it's overwhelming. So in the interim, I am taking the best care possible of my body to welcome this baby girl! And have my body carry her and develop. I have quit coffee, refined sugars, and alcohol. I am eating all organic, doing yoga and just trying to relax and prepare. I am even doing Castor Oil packs (look this up) to heal my uterus. I had to have polyps removed two weeks ago ( for the second time ). So the journey has been interesting to say the least, and I know so much is out of control, but being positive and taking care of me, I can control.

So, I hope this helps a bit. And would appreciate any words of advice or experiences as some days are harder than others.

Thank you ladies,
Patty

Re: One embryo - need reassurance.

  • Hi Patty, I am also fairly new and don't have retrieval experience yet but I just wanted to say that 1=hope and that I will be praying for the best for you! I do have experience with hard days though... It will be ok. No matter what, it will be ok. : )

  • Thank you Kare! I really appreciate it that. I hope the same for you. :)
  • I think that one PGDd embryo sounds great!  you already know it's healthy!  I definitely would have only transferred one if I had done testing on my embryos.  and so many clinics are preferring to do FET to control the body better (and the thawing process has come so far!!!)  I just did a FET and got a BFP last week--my lab said the thawing didn't effect their "grading" or whatever.  I know after all the crap we have to go through to get to this point, that we all want multiple healthy embryos, but one healthy one is a blessing!  chin up, mama!  praying that baby girl starts growing in your belly very soon :)
  • Just have faith and remember it only takes one. You are doing all the right things plus more to prepare for this baby. I will pray for you that all will go great!!
  • Thank You ladies! Just having a group to able to share this with that can relate, makes me feel better. I know you are right, all you need is one and it is a blessing!
  • It really does only take one. I only had one and I have a DD now :)

The success rates with pg tested embryos are in the 80% range, so you actually have a great shot. Just, as you said, prepare your body as best you can.

FX for you! Please keep us posted. I know it's annoying to hear people keep saying that you only need one, but it's definitely true.

  • On our 2nd (first FET) attempt we only had one healthy embryo to transfer and I am currently 30 weeks!

Sounds like you are doing everything you can to have the best chances possible.  FX crossed for you!  BTW - I turned 40 in the spring. :)
  • @jnissa - really?! 80% range? That is he Best news I heard all day! Thank You! My other concern is my actual body. Right after the IVF cycle was over, my doctor found polyps again, and I had surgery to remove them - this is twice now. So I am concerned about my uterus. Plus in the process of getting ready FOR IVF I had to have a mammogram done, which found stage zero breast cancer. Which by now has been removed. So, my body has been through a lot. Should I worry so much?

I feel great now, and I am thankful for the technology and medical care that I have had in order to catch these tumors so early, and have them removed. But it has been draining in every way possible.

I am willing my body to carry this embryo, this pregnancy and lead me to her.

Thank you ladies, your words fill my heart.

  • Hey Patty!
Sounds like you are doing all you can to be ready, I would recommend considering acupuncture as well. While overall there is not a lot of evidence based medicine about health benefits of acupuncture, it has been shown to increase live birth rates if done on the day of transfer (my acupuncturist is planning on treating me the night before, morning of and afternoon of....assuming I get to that point- still waiting to start my first cycle:)). Plus I find that hour of acupuncture so relaxing, I fall sound asleep on the table:)
    Fingers crossed for you!

  • Yes! Thank you. I have been doing some accupucture for some time. I love it. And I am planning the day before and after the transfer. It's a must!!
  • I had a fresh IVF cycle last month and I got a BFN. :( It seriously broke my heart as my husband and I have been trying for about 4 years. I did read however that FET are even more successful at times! Your body won't be so stressed and we've been doing our FET cycle now and I have to agree its less stressful. You don't have to worry about how many good embryos you'll get. You already know you have one PERFECT baby girl in there. You just gotta have the faith everything will work out the way its supposed to. I know how hard that is but you have all of us here to support you! Let this little girl be your miracle!
  • Good luck Patty :)
TTC for Baby #1 for 3 years. After 2 failed IUI's & IVFs, God blessed us with our miracle :).  FET 12/17/15 (transferred 2 embryos at 5days). First Beta 12/29/15 = 354. Second Beta 12/31/15 = 694. Third Beta 1/7/16 = 6,695.  Finally heard his heartbeat (126)  on 1/14/16 @ our 1st US.  2nd US on 1/21/16, HR was 159.  The most beautiful sound ever :)
  • Thinking good thoughts and wishing for a successful transfer for you patty!   Hope it is a success.  I am on the same schedule as you and will be thinking of you.

  • Thank you ladies! I will be praying for you as well!
  • Hi Patty!

I'm new to the bump also!  I just went threw my first IVF as well.  While we had the option to do PGD, we ultimately decided not to do it.  I think the good news is that you know that one embryo is viable and you have every reason to believe it can turn into a healthy baby!  The success rates with a single embryo transfer after PGD are very high- I was told the success rate would be 70-75% if we did PGD, so that is very good news for you guys!!

The #1 reason a fertilized embryo either doesn't implant or is miscarried early (either early enough to be called a "chemical pregnancy" or on the later side) is because of an abnormal number of chromosomes.  The reason the success rates after PGD are so much higher is because you've ruled that reason out.  I'm really hopeful for you! Keep everyone posted!!!  It sounds like you've been through so much recently. I'm so glad they found the breast cancer so early.  Sending so many good luck vibes!
