Anyone Saying No To Testing?

Re: Anyone Saying No To Testing?

  • I was told with my first that he was going to have a neural tube defect, and he turned out to be fine. It really cast a shadow over the entire pregnancy though.

I am high risk this time (advanced maternal age + twins + previous complicated pregnancy), so I will have a lot of extra monitoring. I've already been offered the option for maternit21 testing, CVS, amnio and genetic counseling just because of my risks. My dh and I decided though that we will only do additional testing with cause or for things that can be treated in utero this time. Since I had a false positive last time I'm just a little nervous about doing extra testing just because it's been offered. Obviously if something pops on a routine panel though we will reevaluate that strategy.

  • Not testing because we wouldn't terminate. Also the risks are low, so the results would be unnecessary stress. Another thought for me is that my mom was told to terminate my sister based on these test by multiple doctors, and she continued with the pregnancy; my sister was completly fine and healthy.

  • We've opted for almost every non-invasive test that's been offered. If I could have a wearable ultrasound so I could watch my baby 24/7 I would probably do it.

  • I didn't do it either. My doctor said that they have a 90% false positive rate anyways. I didn't do the testing with my other kids.
  • We've decided not to do any testing, mostly because we are both young and healthy and have no family history of any chromosomal issues or other defects. Like others, we also feel like the results wouldn't change our plans or cause us to terminate, so the stress, time, and cost don't seem worth it.

We did opt for the screening. I am 38 and hypothyroid. This pregnancy was not expected, but a good surprise. I just needed to know what to expect and prepare for, especially since we have 4 other children to consider.  I got my results back this week and thrilled to say we have a healthy little baby boy. This gave me a huge sense of relief. It is a completely personal choice and what you feel the most comfortable with.

While the tests aren't perfect, they certainly don't have a 90% false positive rate. A quick google search came up with between 1-5% false positive rate. If your doctor says something that sounds absurd please get a second opinion or at least research yourself, doctor's can't be experts on everything.
