Glucose Test

Just wanted to say I had an early glucose test today at a little over 20 weeks. Lots of negative things about the drink, but I thought it was delicious!!!!! I had chest pains for several hours after so I don't know what it did to my heart (but the nurse wasn't really concerned) and it went away eventually!

Re: Glucose Test

  • What flavor? I've only heard terrible things about that drink!

  • I had the orange one and it wasn't really bad. It was like a cross between flat orange soda and orange medicine, so it was hard to chug, and I had to drink it in like 5 minutes lol. Just a weird flavor but definitely not awful. And it was nice and cold which made it easier
  • I've had to do the orange one 3 times so far (early and regular with DD and early for this pregnancy)! First 2 times they gave me a straw and it does help. Doesn't taste amazing but it isn't horrible... like kool-aid that has a couple too many sweet-n-lows. And cold is key for sure! Can't imagine drinking it room temp, yuck!
  • With my first pregnancy I had an orange flavored one. Which was warm, and I had 5 minutes to chug it. I gagged hard core on that stupid bottle.

This time I'm not sure if they have different flavors, since I'm at a new office.
But I did see some orange flavors behind the counter, in a fridge. So at least this time it'll be cold, if I have to have the orange flavor again.

I think it's all in preference. I don't like super sugary drinks as is. When I make sweet teas, they have barley any sugar. Too much sugar and I gag.
  • I had the orange with my first 2. They didn't taste as bad as everyone was telling me. This will be my first taste with the red. They gave it to me yesterday to take the day of my next appointment, mid September with instructions of how/when to take for the hour time limit.

I hope your results were favorable for you!

  • My midwife allowed me to use grape juice instead of the glucola. Glucola has so much crap in it and I didn't want to put that garbage in my body. 10 oz of grape juice is the exact same amount of glucose as in glucola. My test results came back perfect.
  • I had it at 14 weeks because I used to have high sugar due to obesity. I had weight loss surgery and now have great sugar levels, but I'm concerned about that rising as I gain pregnancy weight. So he decided to order the three hour just to be on the safe side. Chugging something like that in the three minutes was really hard with sleeve surgery. I knew if I puked it would have to be repeated so I think the hardest part for me was getting it down that quickly. That and feeling like total crap the first hour once it hits the system. I have a feeling he might order it again in a couple months. Ugh....I tell myself whatever it takes to keep an eye on things for the baby!!
  • Mine was orange but they made it super cold. It tasted just like HiC to me. The stuff I drank for my colonoscopy prep was a billion times worse. Agree with previous posters though - for anything you don't like the flavor of - super cold and a straw are the way to go.
  • Ftm- do all of us have to take this test ? and when? I am 18 weeks

  • Usually 26-28 weeks. I had one early due to my weight but I passed. I'll have it again at the normal time.
  • Good to know its not too bad. I have been dreading it :( I have a severe phobia of nausea and throwing up. Thank God I did not get any MS!! But I have heard of the drink making people sick so I am so nervous to drink it. I also do not tolerate sugar well, I never drink sugary drinks. Even a Gatorade can make me feel crappy. I asked the NP about alternatives (gummy bears, juice, blood draws at home, etc) and she wasn't on board :/ I guess anything to make sure me & baby are healthy is worth it, but I'm just really dreading it!
