Megan vs Kirsten

DH's favorite is Kirsten. I'm really favoring Megan lately. My grandmother was Margaret and it feels similar. Pros/cons for either?

  • I prefer Megan.

  • Megan (my name) is actually an old derivative of Margaret, so I would totally go with it. Anytime I hear Kirsten/Kristen now I think of HIMYM - "no it's Krirsten, the r is before AND after the i" :) it's a nice name, just my association.

  • I vote Megan. Kirsten just makes me think of the American Girl doll.

         TTC #1 --- BFP #1 5/15, loss at 5 weeks --- BFP #2 12/15, loss at 4+3 --- RE testing 3/16 normal, still trying for our rainbow

  • I like Megan. Agree with the Kirsten/Kristen thing. It will often be read and remembered wrong. I have the same problem with the breanne/breanna's I know. I can never remember which is their name.
  • I love the name Kirsten and would have named my daughter that if my name wasn't kristen. (My husband is matthew and my son is a junior, can you imagine? Matthew, Matthew, Kristen and Kirsten? Yikes)

Anyway, Megan is NMS personally, but as a Kristen, I Can tell you people rarely if ever get my name wrong. Occasionally someone will call me Christine or Kirsten when they are getting to know me, but considering how many Chris- style names there are for girls out there (Chrissy, Christi, kirsty, Kirsten, Kristen, Christian, Christine....etc) it really doesn't happen often.

Can't stand the name Megan so I vote for Kirsten, though I prefer Kristen.
  • I vote Megan. Kirsten just makes me think of the American Girl doll.

Oddly I think that's why I like Kirsten. I remember when it was her Molly and Samantha and I fell in love with Kirsten as a name.

  • megan is just dated to me

kirsten is different so it gets my vote
  • I just don't think Kirsten is pretty. Sounds like a mean old lady to me. I don't know why.

    So obviously I prefer Megan.
  • I have a Kirsten (Kuhr-stihn). She rarely gets called Kristen, but rather Kjersten. Usually I just correct the pronunciation & that is that. I do have one friend who continues to call her Kjersten despite constantly hearing us say her name. My DH was the one who picked out her name, and I was still hesitant at birth. My mom even called me out at one point for referring to her as "the baby." Now, I can't imagine her with another name. It totally fits my little blonde pigtailed, blue eyed, slightly naughty 3 year old.

That said, I do like Megan as well.
  • I'm a Kristin. I get Kirsten sometimes but not too often. I'd think Kirstens probably get Kristen more often, if that makes sense. I greatly prefer the sound of Kristin/Kristen to all the other "Kris" sounding names. I don't like the sound of Kirsten at all, personally. I like Megan fine. It doesn't seem too popular anymore. There's about 100 ways to spell it though, so she'd have that to deal with
  • I feel like Kirsten is going to be mistaken for Kristen a lot, which would cause me to give the edge to Megan.
This. I went to school with one, and people called her Kristen all of the time.

  • Megan for sure. And as others said Kirsten will get mistaken for Kristen

  • I really like Megan. It's a classic that is underused today. Meg is a great nn too.
  • Kirsten has more pronunciation issues, which would make it a "no" for me, even though I like the name.

First, there's the aforementioned Kirsten vs. Kristen thing.  Then, even if people get that the first syllable is Kir, there's the problem of whether the first syllable rhymes with Her or Beer.

  • I vote Megan.  That's what we're leaning towards for this baby but it's not set in stone yet. :)

Yeah i would worry about that too. I LOVE Kirsten but decidedly do not like Kristen.

I'm meh about Megan. If you spell it Megan, I like it better than any derivation.

I like them both but I vote for Kirsten since there are so many Megan/Meghan/Meaghans out there. (I'm a teacher and I think I had six last year)

I didn't think of that...I actually really like Kirsten, but I would have pronounced it......Keer-sten?
  • Too many pronunciation mix-ups with Kirsten.  I like Meghan, spelled this classic way.
  • Megan is just dated to me. Also, I haven't met many that I like, so I am a little biased. Kirsten might prove difficult to pronounce at times, but I think it is more classic and pretty than Megan.

  • Kirsten. I think Megan has been overused, even though it's a great name. I like Kristen better personally if you're going to go with Kirsten.
  • Megan. My step daughters name is kiersten and she gets Kristen of Kirsten alllll the time. People also have a hard time remembering what her name is since there's 3 close names they can choose from.
  • Megan gets my vote and I like that it has similarity to someone you're honoring. Good luck!

  • Since Megan is overused IMO I like Kirsten better. Good luck!
