Maternity clothes review

there have been several threads asking about maternity clothes and I just got some shipments in so I thought I would share my experiences...
Zulilly: the tops run VERY small, like barely fit me now and I am hardly showing, I will probably just save them for after I've lost the baby weight. I definitely won't order from there again since you can't return and sadly I have another shipment on the way.
H&M: I think if you are broad shouldered and have a large chest their shirts would work, they were a bit gapey (if that is a word) on me up top. They are soft but cheap material.
Old Navy: these fit me the best but they aren't soft. My SIL warned me of that, she couldn't wear their pants because the material irritated her belly.
Walmart: I bought pants and found them true to size and the over the belly part to be super soft.

Just my experiences so far.

Re: Maternity clothes review

  • Thanks for sharing!  I've been hesitant to order any maternity clothes from Zulily because you can't return anything.  It's too bad because they have some really cute clothes.

  • I'm kind of obsessed with Seraphine, but it's a pricey brand.
  • Just FYI on Zulilly, it carries a bunch of different brands so one brand might run small while another large or true to size. I recommend looking up the brand you're considering purchasing from them and seeing if the reviews let you know how they fit.
  • Anyone have any experience with Pink Blush maternity? They have some really cute clothes just not sure about sizing. :)

Glad to hear some reviews! I'm all about trying before buying but it seems like the best options are online.

Anyone have experience with Gap? They had a big sale online recently. Anyone know if Gap locations carry decent maternity sections?

I'll toss in a review too.
Depending on your relative size/bump growth I bought some empire waist A line and stretchy H&M dresses about 3 sizes up, they've been perfect for the in between blump/bump stage , not expensive and can wear post partum/while dropping baby weight (they aren't maternity, just regular). I got them about a month ago and at this rate should last til October. Each dress between 15-35$. It's been great for work clothes and keeps me cool, since I'm tired of just the belly band over suit pants and none of my professional dresses fit anymore.
  • @erincjackson pink blush has been really good for me. I am 5'5 135 (+5 with baby) and the mediums are perfect for me in dresses and tops, just as a size reference.

I got some top shop items but I think I just didn't know how to order with their sizing, and have to return everything.
  • I agree with zuliilly. Just read up about the brand and sizing before ordering. I have some really cute things I have gotten off there that I love. Zuliilly carries pink blush too and I have several dresses that are hands down my favorite from them!

Let's see... I ordered a bunch of tops from motherhood all in the same size and at least three by Jessica Simpson - one was way too big, one way too small and one just right. Not sure what to think but I ended up keeping them all. The jeans from her line fit a bit snugger than other places I've tried. I also ordered two dresses from Asos for work. Granted I wasn't really sure which way to go on sizing, they fit very poorly. They were snug and unflattering around my hips and up top was humongous around my rib cage. They also hit about mid/low shin and were just weird.

  • I bought a standard V neck shirt from Target maternity section and so far it's my favorite. It's so freaking soft and the extra rouched sides will allow it to fit all or most of the pregnancy! And the Liz Lange tank tops are a staple, I have 3 so far. They are a normal tank top just longer which makes them nice for work under shirts and hanging around the house.
  • So far I've ordered tanks and long sleeves from Motherhood and they were priced pretty well and got good reviews online.

I also ordered from Pinkblush and spoke with their customer service.  They said if something doesn't fit you can just exchange it for a different size.

Old Navy jeans were a really good deal and comfortable.

Zulily is a hit or miss.  From my experience shipping does take a lot longer than if you order for regular stores.

Surprisingly, I have found some really cheap things online from Burlington Coat Factory (disclaimer: a lot of their stuff seems like it was made for 16 year olds, style-wise).

  • @Hrc724, I think Old Navy jeans fit me the best too. I agree the part that goes up over your belly does get itchy if it's right on your skin, but I just always wear a camisole and tuck that down under the jeans to prevent any itch. I've always preferred wearing camisoles under most shirts anyway though, even pre-pregnancy.
  • I ordered two things from pink blush. Both large. I am normally a size 14. The large maxi dress fits nice, I ordered a chiffan top and it was to tigh across the chest. If you are larger bust, just look for something with stretch.
  • I ordered multiple tops and a dress from Pink Blush with my last pregnancy. The dolman sweater fit great (if not a little big), a dressy top fit nicely but the sleeves were really snug on my upper and, and the dress fit great but showed EVERY lump and bump. I sent the dress back for a return, which was super easy and hassle free.

I had bought some clothes from Target with my first pregnancy. Never again. Nothing fit right! The shorts were the definition of grandmaw-pants. Terrible.

Otherwise, I've bought the majority of my clothes from Motherhood Maternity. I like the fit of the clothes, but they are a bit pricey.
  • This is such a helpful thread!  I'll throw in my own reviews.

For a splurge, this Pea in the Pod dress is GORGEOUS and very flattering.  I bought it for nicer work meetings and any weddings I'll have to go to in the next few months.  (Plenty of room to grow into, bump wise, too.)

And at the opposite end of the spectrum, I love this versatile black Old Navy dress for summer.  I've dressed it up with a necklace, or dressed it down with flip flops.

And in meh reviews, I have this dress from Target.  It's fine, but I don't love it.  It was the only one I could buy in the store though because the rest of them were paper thin.

    Again, great thread!  :)
  • @Mommab16 same here! I love the tanks, t shirts and jeans ive bought from Target. Their jeans are 40% off (at least were this wkend) so with the cartwheel app coupon they were $16 a pair! :)
  • Also alot of their tanks were on Clarence for $6 at my local target
  • I ordered some jeans from Nordstrom and love them! They are pricey but i think they'll be worth it for me since this is my first pregnancy and we plan on having more than one babe. One thing is being in Canada I probably wouldnt order online from them again as the duty, fees, shipping and taxes added quite significantly to the total cost, taking a $150 pair of jeans to $200. We have a Nordstrom here in town so I'll definitely check it out before ordering online again.
Here's the link to the pair I got, I found they fit true to size, are nice and stretchy but dont sag when you wear them a while:

  • @maureenmce I love that pea in the pod dress, so gorgeous!

On a different note, as I'm from London, whilst I like this thread for ideas, shipping from the usa is rather expensive and a hassle for returns...

Any English mamas out there that can recommend English sites/brands? Thanks all!
  • @BabyFeld - apparently Asos is an English site (shipped from the UK?) but I didn't have a good experience with the fit.

  • @kvackmak - Do you guys have a Nordstrom Rack in Canada?  They may have the same jeans there for much less.  (I'm kind of a Nordstrom Rack addict.  Such great deals!  We got the Calvin Klein suit my husband wore on our wedding day for $100!)  But those look like awesome jeans, regardless!  I too am buying a couple of more expensive investment items, since we're hoping to have one more baby after this one.  :)
  • next month i get my first maternity box from Stitch Fix! i received many shipments from them before and love their picks!! i have a code if you wish to try them out!

  • @erincjackson - I've ordered a few times from pink blush. They have some really cute stuff and I always wait to order when they have a huge 60-70% sale. I've mostly had good luck with their dresses. Some of the tops/shirts are LONG, which isn't bad, but I couldn't wear them with shorts this summer, as they were longer than my shorts lol! They will be cute with leggings in the fall/winter. I'm usually an extra small or small (5'5 125 lbs pre-pregnancy) and the smalls fit just fine! I really like that their stuff doesn't usually have the cinched material on the side of shirts/dresses, it's just a little long/stretchy. I think some of the dresses I will be able to wear with a cute belt after I have the baby!!
  • Just went shopping at a Motherhood outlet today...I LOVE their jeans, SO comfy, but would recommend buying in person, since the different fabric types fit in different sizes (ex. I was a small in the ponte pants but a medium in the jeans). The shirts didn't thrill me, but they weren't bad either...I'm not quite big enough to fill out most of them.

OBSESSED with these houndstooth pants I just bought from them, the material is SO soft!

I tried on some Old Navy maternity jeans a couple weeks ago and despised them...but I've always hated everything at Old Navy, it's low quality and it feels it. I wanted to be able to get away with them for maternity since I don't want to spend a fortune on temporary clothes, but it just was stiff and uncomfortable.

Also have a StitchFix maternity fix coming my way for the first time on Monday, we'll see how that goes!

  • I'm obsessed with Motherhood Maternity! I got a ton of tops there for work, and two pairs of jeans. Everything fits cute now, with definite room to spare for the growing bump. I also really like a pair of shorts I got from Target, and I got a bunch of plain t-shirts that I love at Old Navy super cheap on sale.
  • I just bought some linen maternity tees from the Gap and they fit great and are comfy. Most of my clothes are Gap, so I might be biased..

I also got the Target BeMaternity leggings but I just noticed there's a hole in the leg and I haven't even worn them yet!
  • To all English moms I love Asos Maternity wear. They fit great, look great & feel even better. You must go by your old pre-pregnancy size for a great fit. If u were a size 4 before, then still order s size 4 unless you've put on massive weight, if so adjust it by going up a size & you should be fine. They have everything professional & trendy on this site. Love love ASOS. Oh & they're having a huge sale right now so get in there

That dress is actually from Seraphine, which is an English brand. They have two shops in London (I checked) and would ship there, too. Most of my maternity stuff is from there and I am totally obsessed, even though it is on the more expensive end.
  • @nanamp, @sterlinggirard and @kkfl2m+b thank you! I appreciate your advice, off to hit the Internet for some retail therapy :)
  • I Love Stitch Fix! Just got my first shipment last week. Love the clothes.
  • @lilsips114 can you give us a break down with some pictures of what they sent you?? i've heard great things about Stitch Fix but poor online reviews of their maternity selections.

I wanted to add in that if you do decide to splurge and buy some designer brand denim (I got some maternity Sevens) the gal at the front desk let me know that a seamstress or alterations person can add in a new denim band where the maternity pull over is so you can wear your pants post-baby. Also, if any of you live near a Brandy Melville, they have some great longggg stretchy tops that are super duper comfy and awesome for pregnancy. I have 4 or 5 from pre-pregnancy that have transitioned amazingly.

For straight maternity from regular stores, I got two denim tops from Target recently, SUPER cute. I get a ton of compliments on them. Light blue denim and a darker blue denim. The sizes ran a bit odd so I got one in Large (lt blue) and one in Medium (dk blue).
  • I love Target maternity leggings and there tops. I did buy a pair of jeans and shorts from Target that I wasn't impressed with, but love everything else, especially there dresses. I also like the Motherhood clothes at Kohls. I found lots of cute tops for work. I'm a teacher and am kinda a clothes hort. Also, I only have a couple of things from the Motherhood store, and wasn't super impressed. Everyone's advice is awesome!
  • @Scullahoo, just a funny observation. I noticed while driving through London last summer a "TK Maxx." I thought I saw it wrong. In the States we have "TJ Maxx," so I just assumed my eyes were playing tricks on me and thought nothing of it. But after your post I realize it must be "TK Maxx" in your neck of the woods. I wonder why the slight variation? Thanks for clearing up a mystery!!
  • I've had good luck with Target so far.  Their jeans are decent, but it's the tops that I like the most.  I bought a pair of bootleg and skinny jeans.  The skinny jeans don't go over the belly and I worry a little about that.  I'm not a huge fan of them, but I'll keep them for the 4-5 times I'll wear them.  Kohls maternity pants seem to be a good fit for me too.  I bought a pair of dark wash bootlegs (soft and comfy), black dress pants for work, and a pair of long black leggings.  All fit over the belly and are size medium.  I wore a 6/8 in misses pre-pregnancy.  I went to Burlington Coat Factory, for those who have these stores around them, for cheap basic shirts in black, white, and grey, that were $5-7 dollars, just to wear underneath my sweaters and cardigans for fall.  Believe it or not, I've had good luck at finding some dressy tops that aren't considered maternity at LOFT.  I always found their clothes ran a little big, and I've bought a Large in a few sleeveless tanks to wear under my sweaters for work.  The material is so soft and their cardigans still fit really nicely in a medium.
  • The gap pants are the BEST!!
  • If you're willing to splurge for a great pair of jeans, get AG maternity jeans. Destination Maternity carries them, as does the AG website.
  • I've had really good luck so far with both Old Navy and Gap.  Everything seems to fit great.  I order online and then can return to local stores if I have too.  I also ordered some fall sweaters from H&M and I'm currently waiting for them to arrive!  I'm having trouble finding variety however because I'm on the smaller side and need an XS and I'm trying to keep the price down.   I recently found this site https://www.isabellaoliver.com/us/sale/maternity-wear-sale that has some super cute stuff but even the sale prices are a bit much for my "saving for baby" budget.
  • I received my orders from Motherhood Maternity and PinkBlush this weekend and I was very happy with the sizing/material.  I ordered my normal size in everything and they all definitely seemed to have room for growth.

  • Just broke down and got a pair of Gap maternity jeans. I went from "these are going to be so ugly" to "OMG THESE ARE SO COMFORTABLE!!!!" in about 3 seconds.
I still hate maternity clothes though.
