GTKY: Fears & Phobias

Re: GTKY: Fears & Phobias

  • The dentist. It's a legit phobia. I can't even walk into a dental office

Same here! I get put to sleep just to get my teeth cleaned.
  • Loading the player...
  • I also have an irrational fear of being abducted, or like kidnapped, or attacked/raped. I watch too much TV. Anytime a car is on my street that I don't know I instantly freak out. I'm sure it will carry over to worrying about my child, too...

I opened the door to let my dog out and this creepy frog jumped inside and went behind the couch :( it looked kind of green, aren't those poisonous?! Ugh! My husband won't be home until midnight and I'm honestly freaked out!

You should pack a bag get your dog and sleep somewhere else until your H comes home to get rid of it.

Kidding, but it's seriously what I would do. I am terrified of frogs and would have probably ran out the door and left my dog behind.

  • heights (especially stairs with open spaces between and holes on the step)
This one is kind of weird--people in masks (including clowns) & getting kidnapped.  I always felt really scared around people in masks.  I would imagine them kidnapping me and since they are wearing masks, I would never be able to identify them if I escaped.  So, needless to say, Halloween is not the best for my phobia.

  • Bridges and flying. I used to live in Chicago and went to school in Iowa so I would have to cross the bridge over the Mississippi so many times and I had a panic attack each time. It was terrible. With flying it's the turbulence that scares me. The last time I had to fly, I got a routine together to keep me calm but I'd still much rather not fly.

Centipedes make me freeze. I have been known to cry until they are confirmed dead.
Also I wouldn't exactly call it a phobia but I HATE HATE HATE cotton balls. The texture grosses me out.

My roommate in college had a thing about cotton balls! She hated the texture and legit couldn't be around them. One time she bought a bottle of pills and had to ask the cashier to take the cotton out for her because I was gone all weekend and couldn't help her

@daisytortilla - I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time but that made me laugh. My sister was in a shooting scare at a mall and ran off and left her teenage daughter without looking back. She hasn't lived it down.

Wow! I think I would of been more rational in that situation. I'm more scared of birds than guns. Can you believe that? Lol

  • I grew up in the country on a Ranch so there isn't much that I am scared of, but I do dislike dryer lint... I hate the way it feels and I will do anything to avoid actually having to touch it. Yuck!

  • We had centipedes at our old house, and I had such bad anxiety. I literally searched a room before entering to check for them. Terrifying. I am also afraid of falling, so no flying for me. I have flown, I would just have to be dead to get back on another plane. I told DH that if they ever needed to lifeline me to just let me go, because with my luck, the lifeline helicopter would crash with me in it. No thank you.

That picture is giving me anxiety. Our old house had them too. They were always in the bathrooms and laundry room. Thank goodness where we live now I've never seen any.

When I was pregnant with DD I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night. I was half asleep and didn't turn in the light because we had a little night lite in the bathroom that was bright enough to see what I needed to see. As I am sitting there, I feel something crawling on my leg, I immediately jumped up and started flailing my arms and swinging, hitting the shower and walls (we had a SUPER small bathroom with just a stand up shower). I flipped on the light and found a centipede quivering in the corner from where I had thrown it off of me. Since that incident, I have been horrified by them. At our new house, we saw like 3 the first week, but I think they moved with us, because we haven't seen any since. Now I just jinxed myself.
  • I lived on the top floor of my dorm freshman year in college and got stuck in the elevators several times a month. I now can't go in them unless I absolutely have to. If I see a stairwell, bye guys! I'll meet you up there.

  • I am terribly afraid of horses, and I clam up while I'm driving and see vultures picking at roadkill on the side of the road.  Vultures gather on a water tower outside of where I used to work, and I was SO afraid that they would swoop down on me.  I ran into the building every day they were out there!

WHAT?! Me too!! I've never met anyone else with this problem! Anytime I have to open a new bottle of medicine I have to have someone else take the cotton out. I can't even look at it!
  • Not a fan of spiders and snakes, but those aren't quite to the point of a phobia. However, ticks and leeches (basically anything that latches on to you and sucks your blood that you can't easily pull off) FREAK ME OUT!!!! When I was a kid I got a tick on my head and my mom didn't catch it until that evening. By then it was so full of blood that it was skin toned! She didn't know how to pull it out and I wound up with a scab on my head for a month. Then when we got our dog and he got ticks outside, I was the only one who could pull them out properly so that was my fun job. After all that (plus a few people I know getting Lyme disease) I HATE ticks . . . and leeches are just gross slimy water ticks.

Ugh I haaaaate ticks!! They're freak me the hell out!
  • I am terrified of freeway overpasses. Living in so cal doesn't help since they are everywhere here. Everytime i'm driving on one I hold my breath. I imagine its going to collapse that moment or i'm going to drive off the edge, I seriously can't breath until i'm off it

Ugh. I called them "thousand leggers" in my post, but yes. THOSE THINGS are one of my phobias.

Once in the middle of the night, I woke up to my husband standing over me with this baffled/panicked look on his face. He flips on a light and says, DONT.MOVE. Then he grabs a sock hits me on the arm (which is draped over my head) and grabs/smushes something. It was one of those mofos and who knows what it was doing before..probably crawling on my friggin face.

I will take a spider over them, any day. They are like 8 super-speed spiders stapled together.

Omg, I would have moved to a different bed or to the couch immediately and made DH scour the room for more. I also picked up a shoe one time and heard a tiny squeeky noise. I looked down and two were on my shoe trying to make more of themselves. I threw that shoe across my kitchen and screamed for DH. I always made him show me the corpses after he got them. I didn't initially have him show me, but one time he said he killed one and I went back and saw it in another spot, but close to the original spot. He admitted he couldn't find it, so just told me he had killed it. Not cool. I will take a spider nest over one of those things.

  • The dark + overactive imagination = terrible
Clowns - who the f wants to dress up like that for a JOB?
Water I can't see the bottom off, it could be knee deep and I'll assume there is a shark in it
    Someone living in my roof
Rodents - they were living in my roof in this house when we moved in, so gross

  • I am terrified of aquariums. I know it is irrational but I can't get it out of my head that the glass will break and I will drown and/or be eaten by a shark. The ones that have sections you walk through are the worst.

  • @pbtoast just thinking about cotton balls makes me gag. When I go to the nail salon I ask the girls not to use them. I would freak out and/or vomit if they used cotton balls to remove my old polish.

  • Peanut Butter... I have Arachibutyrophobia. Odd I know.

Just the thought gives me goose bumps and chills. It's a texture issue, way to sticky. Just writing this is making me cringe.
  • Spiders and people in costumes like clowns, Santa, Easter bunnies.... Just creepy!
