long hair problems

I currently have long hair and it's beginning to drive me a bit crazy and I can only imagine it getting worse when the baby comes. I keep contemplating whether or not to chop it off and go to shoulder length, that way I will at least still be able to style it the way I like but it will be more manageable. I was thinking of getting a long bob. However, I have recently heard not to cut your hair before baby comes because you lose a lot of hair after baby is born. Any STM here experience this? And did any of you cut it then regret it after?

After my wedding a few years ago I chopped my hair that was past my chest to in between my chin and shoulders. Pretty much instantly regretted it and it's taken 3 years to get that long again. Something to keep in mind with shorter hair is that it is difficult to put up all the way and depending on the style you have to spend more time/effort on it if you want it 'done', at least in my experience. Maybe wait a bit after little one is born and see if long hair bothers you a lot? Might be nice to treat yourself to a hair appt/spa day if SO will watch the baby!

  • You'll want to be able to pull it all the way back, so I would suggest a style that allows that. With a lob, it is always down and will require styling most days. I lost a ton of hair after my first and it is still incredibly thin. I recommend waiting until after baby gets here to make a major change.
  • I have long hair. I usually let it grown out and then donate 12-13" of it when long enough. My hair is long enough to be able to donate about 15" and still have shoulder length hair.

After DS, I did a donation, and my hair was falling out like crazy. I'd say if you have a head full of hair, then it wouldn't matter. I thought I was going to be bald, but looking in the mirror I couldn't tell a difference.
Do what makes you comfortable. I pretty much have my hair up in a knot every day or else it gets in the way.
I didn't regret it, but then I'm used to growing it out with trims every couple months, and then chopping it off when long enough not to be too short after donating.

Well I was thinking something along the lines of this but a little bit longer to where I'll be able to tie it back. def not an inverted Bob (even though I love the look) cause then like some of you have said it would need to be styled everyday

ETA -- right now because it's so long it takes so long to air dry/ blow dry. So I was hoping chopping some length would minimize the time. I feel like my hair sheds enough as it is so who knows if I will notice a difference after baby.
  • I cut mine right before I had my first and even though I didn't lose a lot of hair after I had her I regret cutting it. I made the mistake of thinking I needed it so short so baby wouldn't pull it and totally forgot that it would then be too short to pull it back and my hair is so thick forget trying to tuck it behind my ears! It was always in my way! I made my husband promise me this time that no matter how much I complain or argue the pros of cutting it that he should at all costs stop me. I always warn my friends now DO NOT get the pregnancy hair cut! Lol
  • I cut mine when I found out I was pregnant last time. Totally regretted it. I went too short and couldn't get it back in a ponytail/bun, which is how I usually wear it. And having hair around my neck and face all the time made me feel uncomfortably warm. Which I also had that problem after delivery but by then it was longer and could be pulled back.

I am thinking about cutting it again this time, just to make myself feel pretty :) but I also like to donate it so I'm waiting for it to get longer so that when it does get cut I can still put it back.
  • Too funny I am getting the same urge
  • I just cut my hair a couple of weeks ago. I have an almost two year old and this one on the way and I don't regret it all. It was one of best decisions I have made in awhile. I am saving so much time on blow drying alone. I did make sure to leave enough length that I can still pull it back.
  • I cut mine short last year, and it's finally almost to where it was. I was SO sad after I cut it, I also made my husband promise to stop me if I ever want to cut it short again! I think past the shoulders might be okay, just because you can still put it in a pony tail, but yeah. Baby's gonna grab it if it's swinging around your shoulders. :)
  • I had long beautiful hair and cut it in March because I thought it would be smarter for summer. Boy was I wrong. Keep your long locks!
  • I had long hair and kept it long throughout my previous pregnancy and after. I kept wanting to cut it and my mom kept telling me to wait, that it was hormones and my hair would change and I'd regret it. I regret waiting as long as I did.

I had it cut around the first of May when I was having such a rough time with morning sickness and taking care of a then almost 7 month old. I just needed easy. I got it cut about shoulder length and it was a little shorter than I could get it all back. Now it's an inch or so below my shoulders and goes back much easier. It's so much easier to wash and dries faster. I feel like I'm constantly pulling it back and with the shorter hair the weight isn't so much it's giving me headaches like it was before.

I have thick hair to begin with and both pregnancies it's gotten thicker. As annoying as the postpartum shedding was it was a relief when it thinned out and was more manageable and laid nicer. As long as your hair isn't already thin I doubt it'll be an issue.
  • Just cut all mine off for a med bob. LOVE it

  • My hair grows fast normally, now with these prenatals it's crazy. I had my hair chopped off above my shoulders a couple weeks ago and I'll probably keep it just long enough to pull back after the baby is born. I had hair past my waist throughout childhood and it was such a pain, it's too thick and curly for all that nonsense. With it being short I can blow dry and straighten it or wear it natural. It works for me.
  • Thanks for all the responses! I guess I'll sleep on the idea for a bit just to be sure. But in the event I do cut it, my hair grows fairly fast so I should be ok.
  • I had long hair until a couple weeks ago. I've had it short before so I figured it would be fine. What I didn't realize is how much thicker my hair has gotten. I am regretting it big time. My hair basically comes out from my head and forms a triangle. I've always had fairly thick hair, but it is crazy thick now. I don't know if that would be a problem for you. I also can't put it all into a pony tail, so that's something to think about too. Good luck with your decision!

If you cut it, you don't have to cut it way short. Cut it to past your shoulders and you can put it all in a ponytail or a bun. I cut mine myself and usually keep it armpit length (when you look at your back, where your armpits are).

I love that! I would just watch how short you cut it so you still have the ability to tie it back if you wanted.
  • I know I love it too! I seen this super cute tutorial on Pinterest for short hair that is just barely too short for a pony tail! So in case that would happen I have back up.. I've been researching, I definitely want enough to play with and curl but need a cute style and it way shorter than it is now. Here's what I was talking about for the short ponytail thing

My biggest freaking pet peeve. It literally makes me cringe when people say "I seen." It sounds trashy and uneducated. DH said it when I first met him and I told him it was a deal breaker to our relationship =))

    Edited for punctuation.

That's super cute, but in my experience the only thing you're going to have time for is literally throwing it up in a messy bun. And only if you already know where your hair tie is cause you won't even have time to look for a hair tie. Newborns are hard work man.

I'm from Arkansas and around here people say warsh instead of wash, among other terrible things. But I do my best not to let my state affect how educated I sound. Be better than your stereotype.
  • I'm doing the opposite and growing out my layers to make it easier to braid my hair and put it up!

Yes!! Good plan. My hair is already long, but it's amazing how "put together" you can look just with a quick side braid!!
  • You are probably going to want to be able to pull your hair back somehow after the baby is born.  But even if it is a little short, you can use headbands and wraps to hold back the short pieces while you are around the house.  Your newborn isn't going to care about how your hair looks and you would be able to style it if you wanted to.

Also, if your hair does thin out after birth (mine didn't, but I also never got really thick great hair during pregnancy) shorter hairstyles might give you more body.  If your hair is thin and too long, it may just look limp and stringy.  I suggest that you get some sort of haircut now to make yourself feel good and then save anything super drastic until after the baby comes.  OR, you could talk to a hair stylist about your concerns now if it would make you feel better.

  • I have long hair. It is to the small of my back. I hate it. I hate brushing it, washing it, or styling it in any way. I want it cut to just above my bra strap across my back with some layers. But... I would feel so guilty spending $50 on my hair when there is still so much I need for my baby. So I'm just going to suck it up and maybe talk my sister into doing just a straight across cut. Sacrifice I'm willing to make.
I cut my own using this lady's tips. Basically, you brush all of your hair in front of your face and make a ponytail in the middle of your forehead. Then cut however much you want off of the ponytail and it will end up in nice layers as well as you taking off length. There are several different videos that use the same technique. You can do a little bit at first if you aren't sure how it's going to turn out and then if you want to do more, then you can do it again taking more off the next time.

  • Hair is just hair! It grows back. If you feel an urge to cut your hair, do it! If you hate it, it'll grow back.

I had hair down to my butt up until a few weeks ago. I hadn't cut it in over a year and that was after a year of not cutting it to grow it out for a wedding (aka, only cut it once for a trim in 2+ years). I just chopped it all off and now it's just to my shoulders -- enough to still pull back into a ponytail but as short as I could go to still accommodate that.

I LOVE IT. It's so much easier to do in the morning, takes so much less effort, and uses so much less shampoo. It's fantastic.
  • Just may try that. Thanks.
  • I was skeptical of it working and was surprised at how well it turned out.
    Just may try that. Thanks.

  • My mom's best friend cut off all her hair during pregnancy and majorly regretted it. How long is your hair now? Does it grow fast? My hair grows relatively slow so when a stylist takes more than I want it takes 6-12 months before it starts to get feel normal which I hate. If your hair is butt length you can probably go bra length without regretting it much. I'd agree with PP about keeping it long enough for a pony either way. I think when it starts getting shorter than shoulder length is when it is probably more traumatic. Baby will pull on any hair longer than 1/2 an inch in all likelyhood so I wouldn't cut it just for that reason. If you have a relationship with a good stylist they probably would be the best person to ask they know how adventureous and emotional you are about your hair (mine would tell me they would do it gradually over 3-4 haircuts...). Good luck!

This! I'm from New England and people say cah instead of car, lah'yer instead of lawyer, and of course lobstah (lobster) and it drives me crazy! Just because it's "normal" to go around talking like an uneducated hick doesn't make it ok. I wouldn't be proud of it either.

  • I have thin long hair but lots of it. I always seem to get this urge to cut it whenever it grows past my boobs. Not this time!! I'm about two inches past my chest and going strong! I wear it up all the time as it requires maintenance when I wear it down. I plan on keeping it long even after baby comes.

No, but seriously… This is completely correct. It is truly of the utmost importance that one does not let their regional grammatical nuances influence their ability to write with proper syntax and grammar. Everybody makes mistakes and it's just an important thing to work on for the future.
