Getting Back on Birth Control

Re: Getting Back on Birth Control

  • Are any of you considering the arm implant? Has anyone used it before?
I'm glad someone asked about this. We've always used condoms but I want to try another method and since I'm terrible at remembering to take a pill everyday and really don't want an IUD, I'm intrigued by the possibility of the implant. But I would to hear real life experiences first...
I was on Depo for 7 years, and overall I'm happy with the results. It's an injection you get every three months (very easy, I'd usually do it myself). It didn't make me gain any weight, and my periods stopped altogether which means no cramps, PMS symptoms, etc. I felt better off it, but I think that's kind of the price you pay to be on hormones. It's less invasive than the implant. They also make patches that you wear for a week at a time.

  • The more research I do on IUDs the more nervous they make me. I had terrible periods growing up and was on the pill for 10 years before getting pregnant (and after 4 cycles and the first time tracking, I might add). Unfortunately once Yasmin changed to Yaz I went cuckoo so I'll probably look for another pill alternative.

I had also been on the pill for 14 years when I stopped and got pregnant.
I loved my IUD and won't go back to the pill again.
I had really bad periods as a teen too and Mirena kept them away completely for 3 years, which was amazing.
They seem to be hit or miss for people, just like different pills are. But I got pregnancy so fast and easily with both kids after years of BC so I fit want to chance the mini pill while breastfeeding.
  • I was on the pill both times I landed pregnant. They were two different kinds but I can't think of the names for them off hand, so going back on a pill form of BC is really not something I want but I also don't want something inserted in any part of my body and the shots are kinda iffy. I plan on talking to my dr about what they think would be a good for of bc and doing all the research I can find to hopefully find one that I'm comfortable with that helps prevent me getting pregnant a third time when not ready.

After researching IUDs more, I'm not going to get one. Although it's rare, there are situations where they can get lodged where they're not supposed to be, and cause infertility. There's also a chance of ectopic pregnancy if it slips out of place.

  • Nexplanon is the new arm implant that I think might be referred to above. Unlike Depo, it's not a shot, it's an actual hormonal implant.

I briefly considered it, but i have some reservations about a hormonal implant in my arm. I had the Mirena after DS1, I had to have the strings trimmed twice because they were bothering DH and then I started getting 2-3 week periods every 6-8 weeks which majorly sucked. This time I'm leaning towards Paraguard since it has no hormones and the mini pill is super time sensitive, which doesn't work for me at all.
  • I'm going to have a more in depth convo with my OB about getting back on BC. But she asked if I wanted to BF and then we talked about the Nuva Ring so I'm assuming that she thinks it will be ok. I'm not on board with getting pregnant again right away. I would ideally like to wait 1-2 years before we have another. It's easy for DH to day "do it again" he's not the one pregnant! :)

I had the arm implant, nexplanon, for almost two years and it was awful. I became a monster. I'd go through periods of time where I hated everyone and would get really withdrawn. I've used several other BC pills and never had a reaction like I did to Nexplanon.

It was great that I never had to remember to take a pill but totally not worth it in my opinion. Everyone noticed the difference in me when I took it out.

Eeeeek. That's definitely not what I was hoping to hear. I haven't done well on bc pills and I don't want to go back on them. I also don't want an IUD. The possible side effects and risks scare me!
  • I'm not a doctor, but I've heard the whole "it's hard to get pregnant while breastfeeding" thing is a myth and that you are VERY fertile soon after giving birth. I've had several family members both on my side and DH's have surprise "Irish twins".

I'm living proof of this myth....got pregnant at 9months pp while EBFing. My girls will be 18 months apart. I will be getting an IUD after this baby. Not interested in having 3u3!
