Does anyone's kid wear glasses? Found out DD will need them at age 3 :*(

I took DD to the opthalmologist today because we noticed that sometimes her eyes wander. Doctor told me that she has mild strabismus but that she controls it well and that she may outgrow it. I was also told that kids her age (17 months) are usually farsighted but that DD is nearsighted (-1.00) and will need glasses by age 3. I was so bummed to hear it. I kind of wanted to cry a little bit. Both DH and I have strong prescriptions for being nearsighted and I got my glasses at age 5 in kindergarten. It's not a huge surprise that she needs glasses but it is a big surprise that she will need them at 3. I was hoping she could avoid my experiences of feeling left out for being one of the few with glasses but looks like we will just have to support her through it. I know things could be worse so I'm glad it's not.

Please let me know if you have any experience with this... I know we're not alone but feels that way and I feel sad for my little baby girl.

  • My best friend's daughter is two and has been wearing glasses for a while now to correct her lazy eye. They're pink & have a strap that goes around her head so she's not tempted to take them off. She has to wear a patch occasionally, and may need to have it corrected surgically, but she will be just fine.

If it makes you feel any better, she looks absolutely ADORABLE in her tiny pink glasses.

  • I had glasses growing up and I wear contacts now but I still have been wearing them since I can remember.. I think I was 4 or 5 when I got my first pair..
  • I have a 3 year old nephew who also looks adorable in his glasses. I think in a way, it might be easier than if she got them at like 5 or 7. Kids are curious at 3 and ask questions, but they're not usually mean yet. Then she has a few years to get used to them before elementary school. Make sure she knows she gets the glasses because she's a really special girl and have her help you pick out the prettiest ones.
  • I got cataracts at 2 and have had glasses since then. Also have had plenty of eye surgeries. It sucks but it's something that you can help ur child with. I'd prefer my son having glasses then an illness where there is nothing I can do
  • I was 4 years old when I was taken into an eye specialist. My eyes drift out so much that not only did I have my first set of glasses when I was 4 BUT also my first eye surgery.

I have had a total of 4 eye surgeries, twice on each eye, at the ages of: 4, 7,12,17.

I am now 21 and still with glasses.

At my last surgery the dr said if I didn't have the surgery that there was a chance my eyes would drift so far out that I could go blind. All the surgeries were supposed to fix the problem and they seem to temporarily fix it. But it is still possible I could go blind at any time in the future.

More kids have glasses now than they seemed to before and older kids often buy fake glasses bc they think it looks cool and they don't actually need glasses, so I wouldn't worry about them being the only kid with glasses :)

Thank you everyone for your comments. I know that I am lucky that this is just strabismus and nearsightedness and not something worse. We all want everything to be perfect for our kids (impossible, I know) so this was a surprise to me, especially now that I am dealing with some changes in vision that I think are due to pregnancy so all vision-related things make me anxious.

@oorl11052015Do you mind if I ask what your contact prescription is now? Sounds like you and I got glasses at a similar age. I'm a -8.00 - -8.50 now.

@WeirdAlice Thank you for sharing your story. That sounds very stressful. I hope that with the advances in medicine they can figure something out that will help to correct your eye issues. It's a good thing that you and your doctor are on top of it.

  • I wore glasses since kindergarten - it probably would have been sooner, but I guess my eyes weren't checked much until school age. My eyes are at -10.25 with an astigmatism. My husband started wearing glasses in college. I can only assume my daughter /other future kids will have glasses, but I wonder how soon.
  • @susanb15 That's your contact prescription? When did it stop changing? I feel like my prescription has continued to change in my 20's but I've also been in grad school for 6 years (lots of comp work) and now been pregnant twice. The pediatric ophthalmologist said it should stop changing at 16 and I think I may have scoffed.

  • Honestly I have to get a stronger prescription now because it's starting to get worst but I have my annual eye appointment tomorrow so I'll update what it is tomorrow since it sometimes has a small change but for 2 years it's been -8.25 and -10.. It took a very long time for my eye doctor to approve me for contacts.. I'm hoping it got a little better but I have a feeling it hasn't..
  • I noticed my sons eyes wondering at 18 months. He got glasses then. So young, I was sad at first too, but not surprised either. Hubby is nearsighted and I am far sighted. Son is far sighted so far, but that can change. He eventually also had to patch as one eye was stronger and doing most of the work. We are off patches for now and he is 5, but they added a bifocal. I totally feel bad for him, but there are far worse medical issues in the world too. Our next step will likely be prescription sunglasses as he has super sensitive eyes like both parents. I got glasses in kindergarten, but am glad I noticed it in my son sooner as from everything I've heard if anything is to be fixed it needs to happen before five. The pediatric optomestrist we see is awesome, so many more things available to our kiddos now days.
  • There are also exercises for lazy/wandering eyes.  I had it when I was a baby and it was corrected without glasses or surgery.  That said, I needed glasses by 2nd grade for near sightedness and my prescription has been getting stronger since then.

  • Thanks @oorl11052015 ! My ophthamologist won't change my prescription while pregnant or breastfeeding because pregnancy hormones can make your vision blurry and sometimes it goes back to normal. Let me know what your doctor says. Have you ever thought of corrective eye surgery? Any info there? I tried to get LASIK 3 years ago and they told me I was at risk for glare and halos at night so I opted out. I am hoping the technology advances so that I can get this corrected in the future.

@weddingcrazed Thanks. How is he doing nowadays? Has the amount of wandering changed over time? I hear it sometimes goes away on its own and that glasses can help to correct it.

@vexedmommy I'll keep my fingers crossed for a similar spontaneous recovery for my daughter and @weddingcrazed son. What is your prescription nowadays? I hate it when doctors say it will stop changing by like 20. That's such a lie.

Yeah it didn't change much it just went from -8.25 to -8... And I have but I'm terrified of the s word (surgery).. When they told me I may have to have surgery after my little guy is born I about crapped my pants.. But that's my fault for not fixing my back when I should have.. But I may look into lasik but for now I'm ok with glasses and contacts lol

Edit because I wasn't done posting yet..

I'm at -3.25 and -3.5.  It's definitely gotten worse as I've gotten older.  The changes aren't as fast, it's more of a gradual downhill slide.  My SD was diagnosed with nearsightedness when she was in 2nd grade.  She's going into 5th now and has had to change prescriptions with almost every growth spurt (and she's 5ft tall so there have been A LOT of growth spurts.)

  • Both my sister and I had a lazy eye and glasses since we were 2 or 3 years old (she's 20 months older than me). My parents opted for my sister to have surgery to correct the problem, but they decided to just do patches/glasses with me and see if I outgrew it. Coincidence or not, my sister still has a lot of eye issues. She has one near-sighted eye and one far-sighted eye, depth perception issues, dry eye, a cataract...you name it, she has it. However, my eyes have actually improved over the years. I used to have bifocals all through elementary school, but outgrew the need for them by high school and now have contacts, which one eye is a zero prescription. My lazy eye is still around, but it's more of a party trick than anything else...it's usually normal, but I can unfocus my eyes and have it "wander" on command lol.

I never had an issue with wearing glasses. It was just something I always did and I didn't think anything of it until college when I switched to contacts. It was fun picking out new glasses every so often. I think your daughter will be just fine. The biggest thing I remember about wearing glasses as a little girl was my classmates seeing the bifocal split in my lenses and freaking out because they thought I broke my glasses!

  •  @oorl11052015 if it went from -8.25 to -8 then it got better! I know what you mean about the surgery but so many people I know have gotten it and I am so jealous of their ability to get up in the morning and just see. I still have to feel for my glasses if I don't remember where I put them.

@vexedmommy those are pretty good numbers! I wish I had that prescription. It's good that your progression has been slower.

@stitch11 DD and our new LO will be 20 mo apart as well. Thanks for your story. It was nice to read about someone else with a similar experience. I always felt like Mr. Magoo with my glasses on because the strong prescription made my eyes look small. Maybe I'm freaking out about this more because of how much I hated wearing glasses. She might not feel that way at all.
