Diaper Preferences

I did a short search and nothing really hit on my question. I want to get a small stock going of diapers before LO gets here, and with the awesome sales Target is always running (hello, $20 gc for up&up) and other sites/stores as well...
My question is, what brand of diapers do y'all prefer? I know that size of baby and potential rashes will determine some of this, but just looking for advice/ thoughts.
Thanks in advance and happy Monday to all!!!

Re: Diaper Preferences

  • For little sizes, the brand really didn't matter to us. In bigger sizes though I'm findingn that in sticking to huggies and pampers. I just like how those fit and seem to absorb more. I don't like the smell of luvs (smell like baby powder to me).
Fortunately ds didn't have sensitive skin, so we switched brands a lot. I probably did mostly huggies because I get those on the best sales.

  • I actually used the Target brand and like that the best compared to the price of huggies/pampers.  My kids did great w/ generic brands and I did not find that they leaked.  I've also used Parent Choice, the Walmart brand.  I get coupons for the name brands and would sometimes buy those too depending on the deal.

The only one that didn't work for either one of mine were the BRU brand.  Which stinks b/c on black friday, they run really good deals on them.

With our son we used Pampers Swaddlers for almost the first year - these are the most expensive for brand name so I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing what we did. We've used Luvs for the last year and a half and have been happy - but I think you will find that all diapers fit every baby different so best would be trial/error. We are still going to be using Pampers this time around until probably 3-6 months and switching to Luvs again. I've heard great things about Target's Up and Up brand but have no personal experience, we may try these this time around too - to save some money.

Huggies did not work for my son at all - he leaked through every time, so every baby really is different.

edit to add: I should have added that we use Luvs during the day and use Pampers Baby Dry for overnight, Luvs definitely aren't absorbent enough for overnight - good point @wisco29!

Pampers all the way!! I got tons of huggies and hated them when my twins were newborns. Pampers fit so much better for us. When they got a little bigger and kept having blowouts, we did switch to huggies for a while because they were a little tighter around the back. After a few months we switched back to pampers and still use them at 20 months. We used luvs for a little bit because they were cheap but I feel like they do run a little small.
    Edit: autocorrected something wrong

  • We use Huggies... Every baby is different and some fit better with Pampers than they do with Huggies or store brand. I think its going to be trial and error mostly. We went through Pampers, Luvs, Up and Up and Honest company before we settled on Huggies. They just seemed to fit DS better than the other brands.

  • We love up an up brand but I don't believe you can buy them in newborn size so I say get pampers. We used pampers swaddlers and we have used the baby dry as well.

We use luvs now but I didn't really like them for when she was little and we did more changes, they don't seem to be as absorbent. They aren't a good night time diaper at all.

Target often has good promotions where you get the gift cards. Up an up is the best deal because you get more diapers for less money than if you get the same thing from pampers or huggies.

We have never used huggies, we are about to try them though because we got an Amazon discount for 50% off a box.
We also used pampers wipes but have now switched to only up and up and huggies. Dd started having a reaction to the pampers ones. No idea why because that's what we had been using since she was born
  • we used pampers sensitive swaddlers for our first until about 2. then we switched Luvs which are fine except they make crinkly noise, which doesnt really bother me or him. We had a pack of huggies, but he kept leaking out of them, so we stopped using them. This time I will probably use pampers sensitive swaddlers.

  • As far as sizing, I have heard people say babies don't stay in newborns for very long, so not to stock up on those but so much, and lean towards 1 & 2 ?

Yah, newBorns are temporary. We stocked on 1 and 2. She's been in 3's the longest! 10 months for sure maybe longer. Just now switching to 4 but they are a little too big.
  • We bought a box of pampers swaddlers sensitive in NB size since DS was in them for about 1 month and also because they had a huge discount on amazon mom about a month ago, so whatever we don't use I will be donating! But yes, you will most likely be in size 1 for awhile.

If you breastfeed I think you will use the whole box lol. ;)
    Soooo much poop.
  • We use Pampers but that is because my sister works at a hospital and gets a case for $18. So that is a superb deal. So we have only used them. 240 newborn and size 1 diapers in a case.

I remember getting NB's in the hospital and we ended up having to buy more because I didn't stock up on any NB's with my son! We did BF too :)

Definitely! Just a small box of newborn size is what I had and he moved on to size 1 pretty quickly. Same goes for clothes! I had a feeling that mine was going to big, so I avoided buying any newborn clothes except a couple of sets of these kimono style side snap shirts (to avoid irritating his umbilical cord area). I ended up getting a couple of newborn outfits from baby shower, and those were all I needed till he moved on to the next size.

  • This is a major newbie question--- but how many diapers do you go through in a day?
Like how many are in a case and how long would they last ?

  • I LOOOVED huggies! The cut out for the cord on the new born size was amazing. I used huggies up until potty training because the pull ups broke my son out.
  • We LOVE The Honest Company brand diapers. As far as store bought diapers, we like the pampers swaddlers. Both out LO's had sensitive skin early on, so the honest company was all we could use that wouldn't give them rashes.
  • @inomniaparatus you will most definitely be changing diapers every 2-3 hours at the least, but plan for every 1-2 hours in the beginning. It will be a seemingly endless cycle of feeding, burping, napping, changing... all day and night for a while.

  • We use Pampers sensitives because they are the only ones that don't make my LO's skin condition worse.
  • We used Pampers Swaddlers for size 1, then switched to BJ's brand since then and only use pampers as an overnight diaper. My LO has never had a reaction to any diapers, and they are about $22 for a case (number in them change depending on the size), but they are a much better deal than brand names. If you find that your baby doesn't have sensitive skin, I'd definitely look into generic diapers. It's saved us a lot of money!

  • We used Pampers Swaddlers for newborn and size one then kind of switched around a bit. I didn't hate the Target brand diapers but I think they stink when they are peed in and I didn't care for the texture that much but overall they work great and are very reasonably priced.

As far as sizes go it depends on your baby. DD was born at 5lbs and was in newborn diapers for the first 3 1/2 months. It seems like she flew past size one and was in size 2 for a while and has been in size 3 for a while and will most likely be in them for a long time yet. She just turned 14 months and is 20lbs.

  • Pampers swaddlers were all I used when my son was born, until he grew out of size two.  The I started using the pampers baby dry.
    Pregnancy Ticker

  • We started with pampers but they gave my lo bad diaper rash so I switched to Target brand as they're very similar, however target recently changed the style of theirs, put less in the packaging, and they hold less imo. So now I've switched to huggies (which when lo was a baby they leaked out the legs and were awful).
  • Definitely 10-12 diapers a day to start with. And mine HATED being wet, so it may have been more than that some days for us. Now we are at like 4-6 diapers and he's 2 so it does slow down.
I'm mobile so can't post the link, but if you search for southern savers diaper stockpile list and she will give you an average number per size to stock up on. She was pretty right on for my son the first time around.
  • We used Pampers Swaddlers for preemie and some newborn, then Earth's Best for N/1, and Honest Company from size 2 until now.

The only other brand we tried were Huggies in preemie and newborn and I hated them.

  • We went through phases---used pampers swaddlers for newborns and 1's---but then we found huggies worked better for size 2 and 3---then the buggies 4's leaked and we went back to pampers cruisers---finally size 5's we used a combo of pampers (for at night--they held pee more), huggies and luvs. Every diaper fits babies differently--I won't stock up for that very reason. You can almost always find great deals on diapers. I found that even when I did stock up on diapers when DS was wearing them---I ended up having to take one unopened case back to swap out for the next size up.

  • Every baby will be different with this. We primarily use cloth but when I have to use disposables I've had good luck with target, pampers, and luvs. Since the newborn stage huggies has always leaked around the legs for my skinny girl.
  • We use 7th generation and I have an amazon subscription for them. Honest company is also great but a bit more expensive.
  • I've heard the best reviews from my mamma friends for pampers or the target brand (from my one SIL who actually lives near a target . . . JEALOUS!!!), but I really want to try Earth's Best Tendercare. They seem more eco-friendly/hypoallergenic and cost about as much as pampers. I bought a few size 3/4 packs around here (they only care 3-5 in my grocery stores) but I got a huge bulk pack from Babies R Us online which was well worth it! I'm hoping they'll work well! They've gotten good reviews :)
  • I forgot we used 7th gen for a while, but they changed their diapers and wipes a few months in and I didn't like either of them, which is when we went to Honest Co.

  • Pampers Swaddlers all the way! They are expensive but the best! My son is almost 2 and we use Pampers Cruisers and are very happy with them!
  • I went with the pampers swaddlers stage 1 for this trip. They don't offer NB with the $10 gift card deal. Between here and FB, I've heard The best reviews on swaddlers. I'm not going to buy too many packs-especially of one brand, because of reasoning given on here. Thanks for the continued advice, ladies! Yall are awesome :)
  • Pampers over here too! I've tried Huggies and they rash my kiddos very bad! I've always wanted to try the up and ups but I'm too scared. Lol.

  • Pampers have been our winner, we use baby dry during the day and the extra night time protection ones a size up for night. We did try luvs, walmart brand, target brand, and huggies but just couldn't get the same fit, absorbtion, and no irritations with those. I hope this new LO is ok with a cheaper brand because diapers are so stinking expensive! We have also tried a few cloth diapers with DD and would love to try some with the new LO but DH is hesitant, we'll see.
  • Pampers lover over here too! Minus the pampers Baby Dry. I thought those were awful. They leaked all the time. But we used the swaddlers as long as we could. It was a sad day when we had to switch. We tried Huggies but didn't like Huggies at all with either kid so we settled on pamper's cruisers. Love those too!

I just got two boxes of Pampers Swaddlers size NB and it qualified for the $10 gift card. I wanted to get size 1 but they were all out.

  • @ohbaby714 really? I didn't see it listed! I would have gotten one box of each if I had known that!
  • I have stockpiled diapers for my last two kiddos and will for this one as well. I think huggies worked better for my girls but pampers were better for my son. My that he is older huggies work fine for him too. As far as generic Kirkland from Costco are my favorite for both wipes and diapers. I like that they carry a size 1-2 also which is a nice I between size.

As far as sizes my kids get chunky fast then thin out. I concentrate on sizes 2 and 4 the most. I also keep an envelope with the receipts in case I need to exchange a size.
