Woops!! Hilarious mishap... What new mom advice do you have from mistakes you made??

edited August 2015 in September 2015 Moms
Well I finally got the stroller and carseat compenents all together and decided today was the day for our first walk: three dogs on leashes, the BOB revolution and the Chico key fit carseat. It was going very smoothly and then one pup got tangled around another. I let go of the stroller to untangle and before I even fixed the problem the stroller and carseat were literally tumbling down a hill towards a pond. The carseat stayed nice and tight but I'm sure it would have been very traumatic had our baby man been here for the experience!! NEW MOM ADVICE: ALWAYS ALWAYS LOCK YOUR STROLLER BRAKE WHEN YOU LET THE STROLLER GO! Live and learn!

  • Our LO hasn't arrived yet but my husband finally decided to try getting two booster seats and the baby's carseat into the back of his Altima... fail. Good thing we didn't sell or trade in my old SUV when we bought our new one!!! They fit there but only with 2-3 inches to spare.
  • Ours was car seat related.  When we were first trying to tighten the straps to fit her, the chest clip crept up a little too far toward her neck and dug in a bit.  She was fine, but she made this little distressed sound, like "What are you trying to do, choke me?"

  • I have done this loading the car up from the store. Freaked the lady next to me out with a run away stroller. Oops! Have diapers and wipes in the car always. When they get older I kept a Baggie of gram crackers or goldfish in my purse always for longer grocery store trips. And some would frown upon it but there really are great free apps out there that sing and read books. It was a life saver sometimes that I downloaded those to keep him busy while I ran errands.

Biggest mom oops was one rainy morning after a sleepless night I had to go somewhere and I needed gas. Ended up locking phone keys purse and baby in the car. FYI cops can't unlock your car for you.
  • Thinking I was brilliant keeping a stash of diapers and wipes in the car so I didn't need to bring the diaper bag on errands. Fast forward to a deep winter freeze and my darling was covered in poop while out and my stash of wipes was frozen solid!

At least this errand was at target so we were able to quickly remedy the situation. Definite mom fail.

I think it depends on your city/state. Once mom locked her keys in the car while it was running and my little sister was in the car but out of her seat. She was about 18 months. We were terrified that she would put the car in drive. We called the cops and tried to get her to roll a window down and it took about 15 mins for her to finally roll it down right as the cops showed up!
  • Mine might be a little more serious but it was a complete accident and everything is perfectly fine.

I went shopping at the mall when DD was about 2 months old. We had the car seat travel system stroller. I took her out to nurse her and then when I put her back in I didn't strap her in because we were just walking around the mall and I would likely have to pick her back up shortly. Well, we finally go to leave and I click the car seat in the base and drive home. When I go to take her out of the car she was not buckled in! I had a complete melt down of how awful a mother I was for not putting a seatbelt on my baby, it took a lot to calm me down. It was an honest mistake and it's ok for me to walk around with her in the stroller not buckled in but I triple check now that her straps are secure!

And yes, I second the pack diapers everywhere. Or just make sure you're within 5 miles of a Target at all times. (This should be a basic human right lol) it's annoying to repack the diaper bag every time you go to leave but it's part of life. I used to keep a little list next to the changer of all the shit it needed inside it just in case some one else decided to do it for me (hint hint DH).

I think another funny thread could be about what mistakes our parents did with us! Since 20-30 (ish) years ago life was pretty different and I know my mother has some pretty hilarious stories! Like leaving 8 month old me in the window sill of a store and then seeing me from the outside while pushing an empty stroller!
  • My ftm fail was FORGOT NURSING PADS! Nothing better than having your first couple outings go smoothly then you go out to dinner with your new nugget and realize your shirt is soaked bc you wet through the pad...oh the embarrassment! Lol! Also bring a change of clothes for you...I once had spitup running down the back and sleeves of my sweater while we were at a wedding. Ugh!
  • ^^ yes yes yes. Always stash extra pads in your purse (not just your diaper bag, if they're separate) because the one time you go out without the bag is when you realize you need to change your breast pads. Mine happened at dinner at Outback lol And a change of clothes. I kept and tank top and capri's in my truck at all times.
  • The first time we took DD out (to the lab to get heel stick to check bilirubin level) we FORGOT to bring the diaper bag.  And of course the wait at the lab was like several hours.  I had to borrow diapers from a mom who was also waiting for a newborns labs to be drawn....
