Is Brody a bad name?

I asked for some opinions on the name Brody over on the baby name board and all I got was really negative response's. I did ask for opinions so negative ones are fine but to say it makes people immediately think the person is a duechbag (sp?) just seems a little harsh.

It's the one name DH and I have been able to agree on that we both like, so I guess I'm just looking for some opinions? Is it really a terrible names and should we keep looking? Am I the only one who likes it? Haha

Thanks ladies!

Re: Is Brody a bad name?

  • I think it's a just fine name! Much better than some others I've heard. If you and DH love it than don't let others opinions get you down. Not everyone is going to love every name, and that's alright. I certainly don't think you're setting your child up for failure or anything of that sort with Brody as a name.

  • I personally think the only opinions that should matter when naming the child is the mother and father. I know douchebags that have all different kinds of names. If you and your husband agree on the name I say go for it and don't ask for the opinions of others because it may discourage you and your decision.

  • I like that name! I like Brady too
  • Thank you! It's hard to name a child and we've decided not to tell family until he is born. I can handle people saying negative things about names and if there is something actually
Bad about a name then I'd prefer to know before we decide to name our kid it. That's mostly why I'm asking.

People are going to have negative associations with names and that's just life. Thank you for the reassurance ladies!
  • My brother and sister-in-law just had a baby boy yesterday and his name is Brody! I never imagined that it was a bad name or douch-ey.

When we tell people what we're planning on naming or son (Ardan) we don't get much positive feedback either. But it doesn't bother me much, its our kid and people will get over it and then look like jerks if they said mean things about it haha
  • I like that name! I like Brady too

We like Brady too! DH is a little hesitant on it because we know two females named Brady and he isn't found of that! But it's a really nice name so it's still on our list!
  • The only negative association I have with it is Brody Jenner. Other than that it is a very cute name! Go for it!

I had to look him up. I am not a Kadashian fan so I had no idea who he was haha! Adam Brody is a good actor and Dean Brody is a great country singer so I think there are a few positive celebs that share the name
  • That's actually one of my favorite boy names. I like that it's different than all the usual names that are out there, but it's not too unusual and everyone has heard of it.
  • It made me think of the TV show Homeland first, for whatever that is worth.

I agree, jerky people come in all names. Don't change a name you like simply based on that.
  • I have always disliked this name even though I have an awesome little cousin named Brody and have known no one else named this. I don't know why I don't like it!

If you love it, then I say go for it. There will always be people who dislike whatever name you choose!

I agree with all the PPs.  I came across this article on Facebook the other day and I found it comforting and true about choosing a baby name.  Hope it helps you make a decision!

  • I like it! And honestly? Who
Cares what anyone else thinks? I have seen a lot of names that I love on those boards and seen them get horrid responses. And I think that's stupid. Those ladies opinions are just that, their opinions and not everyone's. I have purposely kept my baby's name to myself because I don't care what anyone else thinks. I am in LOVE with the name and I don't need anyone else to deter me from it.

Name your baby what you want. He's yours and he will be loved no matter what!:)
  • The thing you should realize about the baby name board on this site is that the majority of people who sit over there and response are extremely opinionated, have VERY firm rules about names, and like to voice them in the harshest way possible. I've used the page many times and have appreciated all the feedback, but you have to know ahead of time that that is what you're going to get.

That is not the majority of the population.

If you and your husband like it then that's all that matters. If you're truly concerned about people voicing their negative opinions, then definitely don't share until after baby is born. people have a much harder time telling you that they don't like your name when the baby is right there. When the baby is still in utero? All opinions seem like fair game.

As for the name, it's not my style but I have no negative connotations nor do I think it's a bad choice in names, just not one that would end up on my list.
  • I like the name Brody, it's cute but masculine at the same time. It does make me think of the TV show Homeland (which is awesome BTW) so I say go for it.
  • I recently posted, on the baby names board, for opinions on our 1st pick of names too. (Kaidan Scott) I also got tons of negative feedback. I was surprised at how judge mental people can be! I heard it all: hate the spelling, too trendy, too weird, etc. But I have decided: whatever! We love the name. You & baby's daddy are the ones who should decide. And- yes, I think the name Brody is cute. ;)
  • I read your thread on the baby name board as well and geesh. Anyways, I noticed several people saying they've heard a lot of dogs with that name and I wanted to also add that my brother and sister-in-law that just named their new baby Brody used to have a dog named Brody. They loved him a lot and he suddenly passed away a few years ago. They've since had 3 sons and every time considered the name Brody just because they loved that name but they did also love their dog. Everyone gave them so much crap that they couldn't name their son after a dog but this time around they were like forget it and just told everyone his name is Brody and that was that.
I always thought who cares if it's a dog name and/or your dog's name. I have a dog named Bella and that's a super popular human name yet don't go around saying its a dog name. Oh and if I have a daughter I actually would make her middle name Bella since I love that name and my dog!
  • I like the name Brody. I have students with that name in the past and have always thought that it was a nice boys name.
  • Nothing wrong with Brody at all. It's your child, your choice. If you want to look it up, try a search for famous people named Brody.... I did that when we chose Lucius for our child. Sometimes it's comforting to know you aren't the only one :)
  • Nothing wrong with Brody at all. I agree with what some PPs have said that all that matters when naming a child is what the parents think.
  • I had a Brody in my class a couple years ago and he was a super sweet and smart kid. I say go for it!
  • @baby+mum I love that name! You can call him Kade for short.

  • You get to call him Bro for short, sounds pretty stellar to me.
  • It's not Jayden or Aiden. :) Not my style at all but i wouldn't say it's a bad name, no.
  • Love the name! My nephews name is Brody, and he's awesome! He's very smart, funny, and respectful. That's so silly for someone to say he would be a douche bag. I thought something that was dictated by actions not what you're name is.

I say go for it! Btw my brother and his wife have all sorts of cute nicknames for him, and he loves it lol

Lol the baby name board trashes every name...except recently someone asked about something i couldn't pronounce like Kzakwilaha and they loved it. Go for Brody if that's your favorite.
  • They are so mean on the baby name board!
  • That's what we're planning on naming our baby boy so of course I love it! You should never let anyone sway your decision on YOUR baby's name.
  • The only Brody I've ever heard of is Brody Jenner. I don't think it's a negative association. I just know he is from Laguna Beach and then it came out later on that he was related to the Kardashians via his dad's marriage.

If you like the name, name your son that.

If that's the name you both like don't worry about what other people think. No matter what name you pick someone will associate it with someone else
  • Nope, not bad at all, I like it
  • I like the name Brody. I see nothing wrong with it.

  • Unfortunately had a student ruin that name for me. ;)
  • I like that name. I have been to the name board a little bit and I have come to the conclusion they don't like any names there. Even common names they bash the hell out of if you and your husband both like it then I saw go for it.
  • If you don't have any bad connotations around it, then let the haters hate. Only thing that comes to mind is the POW turned terrorist in Homeland, but I'm just starting that show with the husband and I don't know if he ends up being bad or good. I like nameberry.com for checking the to see other pop culture references and such. I don't watch a lot of TV so I didn't know I named my son the same name as a famous chef until after the fact.... And I don't care.

  • I haven't read EVERY comment on this discussion, but I do not get what would be wrong with the name. If you like it and hubby like it, go forth. While I do happen to like the name and think it is nice, you can't please everyone. As long as baby Brody is loved, you are all good.
  • I personally wouldn't choose that name but then again I don't really care what people name their children. Some names make me squint really hrs and think "really!?" But not a name like Brody. If you and SO like it and baby looks like a Brody when he's born then do what makes you happy !
  • My sons name is Brody! It's a strong name. People will always have their own opinion, but who cares. Some moms need to take it easy when bashing a child's name, especially when the name could be someone's child's name.
  • Don't let them get you down. Maybe they don't understand how insensitive it sounds. A long time ago a friend of mine husband liked the name Penny and I ripped it apart, totally felt bad for it and now I kind of like it. Now that I'm expecting I said a name I liked, Hayden, and he ripped me back saying I should avoid using that name. I guess he wasn't over my comments. I wonder how many people on that baby naming board are actual expecting or just there to judge.
