I went back for a week of prep panning and then a week with kids. The stress got to me and raised my blood pressure and now I am on bed rest until she gets here! Take it easy and try not to stress because this is no fun!
Oh no, @swaffles! Early maternity leave plans for you, I guess?! Best wishes, and I hope you can find ways to keep yourself entertained!

I went in to set up my classroom today and only lasted 2 hours mostly because of the heat. I'm hoping the AC is in full force once the kids come or I'll be pretty miserable for my remaining weeks :(

I'm already planning to let our secretary know that I'll be emailing her a daily maintenance request to turn the temperature down in my room. Maybe after 10 days in a row of requests, they'll get the idea?

It's usually miserable, and I refuse to put up with an 85+ degree room while 8-9 months pregnant. I will throw a royal fit. Our district hired an "energy expert" a year ago, and I'm pretty sure all he does is make sure room temperatures are just on the edge of what might be considered a violation of safe working environments. Perhaps an exaggeration, but it doesn't seem like it at times.

The good news is, they do typically respond to maintenance requests, albeit slowly. And I've got a big ass fan I intend to point right at my face.

I tend to keep my room cooler because I think it smells better than when it's warm...this week I am freezing my kids out, though. I can't help it! I'm burning up. Hopefully they honor your requests swiftly!!

DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME that there are schools with AC?! Stop it right there. I just assumed we all suffered in solidarity during the first and final months of the school year, sweating away in the front of the room with a room full of teens and preteens who may or may not have showered in a couple days but who view Axe as a viable alternative! WTF.

@swaffles, this is my fear! When I went back to work pregnant with DD, the heat and time on my feet sent me into labor. Granted I was just over 38 weeks, but I'm fairly certain I could have made it another week without the exertion of setting up my room and welcoming new students and families! I hope you are able to relax and feel good about the time you are on bed rest. I know that bed rest isn't easy and it can be mentally challenging to feel like you should be or could be doing something else. You are doing the most important thing you can for now!

I'm sure that if I email maintenance requests for a cooler room temp, they'll tell me to sit on an ice block and then they'll roll a barn fan down to my room. Can you imagine the disarray my room would be in when they fire up a barn fan??

  • @LiveNLove44 oh my goodness, I cannot imagine teaching in an building without air conditioning! You are super woman. Seriously.
  • I'm exhausted. We started August 3rd and I feel like I am in my first trimester again. I've been going to bed at 8:00 as I'm waking up at 5:45. I do have to say, the maintenance staff at my school was GREAT in helping me move stuff in my classroom. A few teacher friends came and helped me hang up my bulletin boards. Also, the kids and parents are great. They get that I just need to sit down sometimes.

It's exhausting but it's great to get back. I think the toughest part is getting ready to hand over my classroom to my long term substitute. I worry about that, especially when the kids say things like 'don't leave!'
