Intro + 2nd time mumma question

Hi lovely ladies,

I'm Jess from Newcastle Australia, although my hubby, daughter and I live between Aus and PNG at the moment. My dd is 18 months old and the light of my life.. From my calculations I'm five weeks tomorrow with #2 and super Excited about it!

Just a question though - has anyone told their family about their second pregnancy and they don't seem as excited about it? I told my mum, dad and sister separately and got the same oh you're pregnant? Response from all three.. The three close friends I told jumped up and down and squealed with me.. Two are pregnant with their second and the other doesn't have children yet but they showed a hell of a lot more excitement than my parents and sister.. I think I'm just disappointed cause we're all quite close and they were very excited last time.. I don't know.

Has anyone else had anything similar?
Regardless, looking forward to this journey with you all x

  • Welcome! I haven't told anyone yet and will probably wait until after my first appointment. Congrats though!

  • When we told my parents over FaceTime the other day my DH commented that they didn't seem too excited. It didn't really bother me though, that's kind of just who they are (not sure where I came from sometimes lol).

  • I am really struggling with when to tell the ILs as I know they will be shocked and a bit judgemental. I have a cute way to tell them, I just don't know if I have patience to deal with their shinanigans.

When we announced #1 to them MIL got super clingy to DH and we butted heads heads most of my first tri because she played 20 questions and called every day.

  • Welcome and congrats! We have told my mom, stepdad, grandparents, and the IL. My mom said congrats and smiled then asked me what it means for our kitten, we had just gotten 3 days prior to finding out, which is nothing. Step was out of town and he was super excited to be a grandpa again. My grandma was just like oh no no no no oh no oh no. Then she got excited for us. With her though I didn't take it hard because we are super close and I know it was because she was in shock. My grandpa, haha, he said, well that's no surprise of course she is. It was very comical because he had just gotten done telling me I'm a fool for getting a kitten. The FIL smiled and said congrats. It was like he couldn't care one way or another but that's just him so I didn't take offense. MIL was in such shock she needed ice water because she was getting hot flashes and her heart was racing. SIL and her husband got excited for us and my other BIL was excited to. This is our second pregnancy and the reactions, though some were excited, were not as nice as the first time around. Oh well can't do anything about it except be even more excited for yourself and your growing family!

  • We haven't told my parents or ILs yet.  We told my cousin and her husband who are expecting their first in November and they were super excited (I'm excited that we'll both have babies close in age).  We'll likely tell ILs tomorrow and they know we are trying so I'm sure they will be super excited.  We won't tell my parents until after we tell our daughter.  I really am not sure how they will react, they're really weird sometimes.

    Congrats and enjoy.
  • I got similar reactions. Nothing is as crazy as becoming a parent for the FIRST time. The babies aren't more special than the 2nd ones it's just that it's a first time situation that typically elicits more exaggerated reactions. My parents were happy with the news but not as crazy as the first time! I'm just as nervous about the whole thing as I was the first time even though I've got one under my belt!! Regardless, congrats!!
