Oral thrush?

Anyone else dealing with your newborn having this? I EBF and my Lo has thrush. It's so hard trying to get a newborn to take an oral liquid antibiotic 4 times a day when all she does is make horrible faces and spit it all out. This has to continue for 12 day! :( maybe longer if it doesn't clear up, as my midwives said and gave 2 refills. Ugh. Not to mention I have to treat myself with a cream on my nipples a few times a day so I don't get it and we don't pass it constantly back and forth. So frustrating !! Sorry needed to vent.

Re: Oral thrush?

  • My son has thrush too. My sons doctor told me to put the amount of medicine needed in a little cup and then use a q-tip and rub the medicine all over the tongue and gums. It seems easy. But she did tell me that some doctors make you actually just give the baby the medicine through a dropper but she said that doesn't work as well. Rubbing it on the tongue and gums gets rid of the problem faster and easier.

  • Thank you!! That does seem easier!! I will try that instead and hopefully it gets rid of it!
  • DS1 had thrush when he was going through ear infection after infection and constantly on antibiotics for three months. He was 6 months when it all started so it may be different than with a newborn but we were given some thick, white stuff that we spread all over his mouth like mentioned above. It cleared up quick and was easy to do.

My daughter was given ratio-nystatin susp and I was given the same thing in cream form. I wish it was a thicker medicine so it wasn't so messy, being it's a watery yellow liquid, but hoping the qtip trick will make it easier. Thanks ladies !!
  • We're dealing with this too. Been giving her Nystasin for a week and coating on tongue is still there but getting a bit better. I'm lucky to not have any breast pain, just some nipple tenderness. Giving her 1mL four times a day and putting a drop on each nipple when she gets the meds. I think I'm going to try using the q-tip method after feedings where she doesn't get the drops. I'm making sure I clean the dropper with vinegar after application and when I don't put the Nystasin on my nipples I use coconut oil. I'm also taking probiotics and giving them to her as well (I either put powder on my nipple or on a little bit of coconut oil on my finger and let her suck it off). Also using breathable breast pads and using new pair after each feeding. Trying to let my nipples get as much air as possible though. Hoping it's gone soon!
