August 2015 Moms

2 questions/worries, need advice/stories!

So I came back from my prenatal appointment from my doctor. Everything is perfectly normal and baby is head down. I'm 39 weeks and 1 day with a baby girl, first time mom!

TL;DR- 1) My baby hasnt dropped yet, my doctor isn't too concerned, but my older sister is, should I worry? Or just see what happens until my due date? (Aug 19). Also what can I do to help her drop? If anything.

2) I got a stretch and sweep, but I don't feel anything compared to what I've been reading online (being very uncomfortable, bloody discharge.) Lots of mucus-like discharge came out but other than that I don't feel anything. If you got a sweep, how was it for you? Did it work in terms of starting labor?

The first thing I wanted to ask about is the fact that she hasn't dropped yet, here I was thinking I was already dropped! My doctor didn't seem too concerned, and said that she might drop before my next weeks appointment, assuming I don't go into labor by then. But when I talked to my older sister, who's had two kids, she seemed really concerned! Saying I could be high risk if baby doesn't drop so I'm kind of paranoid now. My question for this is will the fact that she hasn't dropped yet affect me giving birth? Would I have to get a csection? Should I not worry until my actual due date? Also is there anything I can do to help her drop?

Secondly, my doctor did a stretch and sweep while I was there, since I'm very uncomfortable and here they offer it to woman after 38 weeks, since they consider the baby full term. When I read it online, I keep reading that it was going to be very uncomfortable and painful and blood tinged discharge would be coming out afterwards. Its already been a couple of hours and I don't feel anything haha. I only felt a prick when my doctor did the sweep, but other than that nothing else. I guess my question would be did you get a sweep? And how was it for you afterwards? And am I supposed to be feeling anything right now or did it just not work?

Thanks for reading !

My son dropped at 30-ish weeks and was born at 33 weeks. My daughter kinda dropped and then rose and then kinda dropped and then rose for the last 5-6 weeks. I had her at 39 weeks 4 days.

Everyone is different. If your doctor isn't concerned, I wouldn't be either.
  • Head not being engaged is not an issue from what my midwife has said.

My cousin's first child only dropped in active labour (spontaneous labour started at 2am at 39+2wks, baby was born at 3pm). She also had a sweep with her second at 40+1 and said she didn't have any issues with it whatsoever, except for the fact that it didn't work within the 24 hours she was told it would, but then they don't have a particularly great success rate if you read the stats. Her second baby was a spontaneous labour starting at 12pm at 40+5.
  • Thank you to everyone who replied, I'm not worried anymore and its kind of a relief to hear it. My sister can be pretty dramatic and that's how my sisters usually are, my mother had 8 of us and she wasn't to concerned when I told her as well, so yeaaah.

As for the sweep, I am pretty glad that I'm not feeling much discomfort, but I'm a little disappointed in a way, because perhaps it didn't work! Ah, I don't know, I'm just so anxious to see my little one and to experience labor. Guess I'll just have to be patient.

    Thank you mommies again!
  • Your sister has two kids, but your doctor has delivered probably hundreds of babies.  Who do you think knows best?

Stretch and sweeps are notoriously ineffective. It isn't a surprise if it doesn't do anything.
  • My doctor said there is a small chance walking MAY help baby move down but as PP said many don't until active labor so walking won't hurt but no guarantee it helps. My doctor also said the sweep only works if baby is ready.
  • I did a lot of walking and used an excercise ball in the last couple weeks of my pregnancy. Both helped the baby drop, but she still often popped up again at night. If wasn't until right at the end that she stayed down.
  • A nurse in my Labor & Delivery class the other day said doing stairs is really good for that. So maybe go to the gym and do the stair climber? Or - consider taking the stairs instead of the elevator wherever you go.
  • I never dropped with all three kids until they were on their way out. My sweep was uncomfortable and I didn't have him until two days later.
  • Thanks girls, I will be sure to try these things. Still nothing yet, so it probably didn't work then, ah well.

I thought I was getting labor contractions. But they stopped after I tried to time them. :( Hoping its soon.
