GTKY: Baby Name Guilty Pleasures

Okay, so I searched this and didn't find this topic in the January board, so hopefully it isn't a repeat, but are there any names you secretly love but would never use?  For me, I have a name that I picked out for a baby girl when I was like, 15 and I've secretly loved it ever since:  Indiana.  And you could call her Indy!  (Okay, I may have been a GIANT Indiana Jones fan.)  ;)

What about you guys?

  • I love the name Bartholamew, but I wouldn't ever. The shortened nicknames and such would drive me crazy lol

  • Mine isn't that interesting...but I always loved the name Ava BECAUSE it was unique without being weird...and then suddenly in the past few years it's become popular, which is half the reason I liked the name, because it WASN'T popular...so despite being the name in my head for my future daughter since I was a teenager, I immediately scrapped it, before even conceiving. I know some people don't care about such things, but as a substitute teacher I've seen an Ava in at least every other classroom I've been in, which just isn't my style.

  • I rather like Samuel, which isn't that bad, but our son is Dean. We like the show Supernatural, but not THAT much. I also like Darian, but as that is the main character in a series I'm very fond of, so I would NEVER hear the end of it.

  • Sailor/Saylor!!!! I just can't bring myself to do it.
  • Fiona. I ADORE this name, but caught crazy crap from my family and DH when I tried putting it on the table. Always the Shrek association :(

  • What's wrong with Shrek? I like the name Fiona. If you said Bellatrix I'd be giving you a major side-eye but Fiona is fine imo.

I like Eleanor and Harriet but neither are my style.
  • Oh idc what the family members said. I won't ever use it simply because my DH isn't a fan.... We've since found a name we both agree on, but I will forever envy little girls named Fiona.

  • Fiona is pretty. Yes it reminds me of Shrek, but that won't last long. If you could convince DH, do it.

I like Chrysanthemum, but it's not only a flower, but a mouse.
  • I love Isaac but my best friend just named her newborn Isaac.
  • I love Emmalynn, but a) we're having a boy, and b) DH is convinced that it's not a real name.
  • Ben - I have cousins named Sam and Ben... and we already have a Sam.

Francis - It was my ex's middle name. My husband probably wouldn't notice, but I would know.

Poppy and Clover - for obvious reasons.
  • @laxdixdar That's so funny, I would never have associated Fiona with Shrek (I haven't seen it) but with Fiona Apple, who is one of my absolute fave musicians.  It's a really pretty name, but if your dh hates it, I get why it's off the table.

@holocene Poppy is totally one of my guilty pleasure names!  I think it sounds so adorable and feisty and refreshing... but then I try to picture it on an adult and I just can't!
  • Love rain for a girl and river for a boy. DH says its too "hippy"

My cousin named her daughter Avalina. Like a blend of Ava and Angelina. At first I thought she was weird but it's really so pretty. And she calls her Ava and Lina for short. Something to keep in mind.
  • I think Philippa sounds cool, but it is too fancy for me. I also think the nickname, Pippa, sounds like Pee Pee or something a kid would call their privates :P
  • @laineylove78 Thanks for the suggestion, that's pretty! We actually already had our new girl name picked out before conceiving (and a boy name shortly after, however that lasted all of 3 weeks before we learned she's a girl), so she's been Maya for several weeks now :)

  • I am crazy in love with the name Ariadne (air-ee-odd-knee), from Greek mythology. I have never expressed to DH that I am serious when I bring this name up, and he's never said one way or another. Thank God this baby is a boy so we don't have to cross that bridge right now! Our pre-selected girl name is Abigail, but....
  • I don't know why this name appeals to me, and I would never actually use it, but for some reason I am drawn to the name Odessa.
  • I rather like Samuel, which isn't that bad, but our son is Dean. We like the show Supernatural, but not THAT much. I also like Darian, but as that is the main character in a series I'm very fond of, so I would NEVER hear the end of it.

I absolutely love the name Jensen, but I wanted the middle name to be Dean after my dad/grandpa and my DH actually thought it would be funny! He doesn't like Jensen too much but almost agreed to it when I mentioned the reference. I would still love it but I don't want to think of Supernatural everytime I see my son lol.
  • I love the name merrick for a boy but everyone definitely vetoed that. So sad. If I was the last person on earth I would name my son that lol
  • @BarrettJ89 we totally have cats named Maverick and Goose! Couldn't name our kids that, so pets it is :)

My guilty pleasure boy name is Rupert. I love the old feel of it, but don't know if I would ever be able to actually use it. Another boys name is Tighe (Ty-g) but DH vetoed that immediately.

For girls names my guilty pleasure would be Flora. I love old lady names, but have had to stay a little more game than Flora for my DH.
  • Zeppelin, after Led Zeppelin... One of the greatest bands ever. I would never do it, but most names I like would be in "tribute" to some of my favorite musicians. Joni, Dylan, Lennon, Mick, Van.... Layla (Eric Clapton). I'm just a music nerd I guess. Also a huge Harry Potter lover and if my friends hadn't named their dog Luna, I would seriously consider it for a girl. Edit fat fingers
Save it for a pet!  Seriously, I really badly wanted to name my previous dog Zeppelin.  I think it's such a good name.

  • I always loved the name Alice. But, I loved it so much we named our cat Alice before I could even consider saving it for a baby. We still don't know what sex baby is and we have great names picked out for either. I guess Alice will have to stay with my first fur baby.

  • I used to love the names Terra and Alaska for girls, but I would never subject my child to them now that I'm actually pregnant. I also like Ava but as PP said its so popular now that it's not really that appealing anymore, sadly all the girl names I like seem to be really popular just now which is a pain. I also love Skye as a girl name but named my cat that, so that's out too!
  • I have a ton in guilty pleasures that I wouldn't use, but I don't necessarily side eye others who use them.

    Dorothy, Daisy, Ruby

    Max, George, Axel

I'm sure I have more. These are names when I suggest them my DH looks at me like I have 2 heads.
  • I love the name Montaigne for a little girl!! (Rhymes with champagne) but my husband vetoed it... :((

It is a great name for a pet! I guess in a few years we'll have a pig named Zeppelin since we decided that's what we want next lol. I already have a white poodle mix named Axl Rose and a black poodle named Slash. They are quite the pair, haha.

Fox would be my guilty if I was having a boy. X-files fan ("Fox Mulder") & I think it's so cute.
  • PP, I LOVE Spanish origin names! And my and my hubs are just plain white : )
I wish I could bend that line without people thinking it's weird! When I look at names and run across Spanish ones, I'm like oh I want it so bad!
I also like Aurelius (Uh-Ray-Lee-us) but I just 'think' it's too much! And I don't even know why I like it! I just do! Ugh.

Something really Celtic sounding, like Eowyn or Maeve or Maihread. It wouldn't be too far fetched to do it, since my name (Bronwyn) is Welsh, but I would never do to my child what my mom did to me. I've been called Brownie and Brown-wyn my whole life.

  • @MamaHolland ME TOO!  My husband actually loves it, so Fox would have been a serious contender (maybe as a middle?) if we were having a boy, but girl it is!  :)

River is also mine for a boy :). I am calling the baby river for jokes and saying I'm getting it out of my system :).

For girls it's Gemma. Ever since I was a teenager it's been Gemma. Husband thinks it's British :(

So many! boy: Cypress, Rastus, Basil, Titus, Atlas, Pax girl: Juniper, Calliope, Hermione, Paprika (don't know why, always thought it would be a pretty name) One of our actual contenders is Poppy, I can see it for a little girl and an older woman, it is a little hard to picture for a 20 something...
  • This is a fun thread! Love the name Violet, but it's my nieces name so I could never use it. Also think Daniel is nice but my last name is Daniels soo that's out
