First MIL Rant

My husbands stepmom is watching my 4 week old baby today while I am at professional development (I'm a teacher- and wanted to get my hours- I start maternity leave next week).

I ran over to her house on my lunch so I could cuddle my baby- who is usually breastfed. I pumped and sent bottles with him yesterday and today.

For almost an hour I listened to how 2-3 oz is not enough for him and he needs to be eating 4 because I'm starving him. She said she fed him and he just cried and cried so obviously he was still hungry.

Uhhh....ever heard of gas? Or fighting sleep? Not every cry is for food!! He is less than 8 lbs and gets fed 8 times in 24 hours. The oz equation says: birthweight x 2.5 / however many feedings.

Which would be 2.5. I am NOT starving my child!!!

  • My 4 week old pounds a 4oz bottle in less than 5 min. You could try more and see if she takes it. Babies don't always adhere to numbers and equations. I'm not saying your wrong just to keep peace between your mil and you you could just try it and see how it goes. No use burning bridges if your going to use her for babysitting.
  • My 4 week old only take 2 sometimes 3 Oz and he's a big 13 lbs so being solely breastfed hasn't taken away from his weight gain
  • He spits up every time I give him more than 3 oz. Her thought is that if he's crying, then he's hungry....he's gaining weight and I pump at the exact intervals that I would normally feed him- and I pump right at 2.5 oz (total) each time, so he's getting roughly that much when he breast feeds. She isn't going to be babysitting him when I actually go back to work, but I feel like she shouldn't be jumping me the very first time she watched him. He's a fairly happy baby and sleeps through the night - he just gets gassy and fights sleep, hence the crying.
  • If he's spitting it up, it's too much. My LO eats 3oz daytime and 4oz night time but he is a big turkey. Lol. I do agree that not every cry is for food. It's just the easiest thing to give them to keep them quiet!
  • When breastfed, our LO is totally content with 2.5-3 oz. When it's out of a bottle he gets it so much quicker and doesn't realize he's full! He could easily take 5 oz, but then he'd feel miserable!
