glucose test alternative

edited August 2015 in November 2015 Moms
Thought I'd share my experience - I have Celiac disease and due to the manufacturer + my doctor being unsure of one of the ingredients in 'the drink', they mentioned I could do the alternative for the GD testing. This alternative, they said, was available for anyone to try not just those with food allergies. My doctor informed me that an alternative to the glucola drink was to eat 28 jelly beans. Same directions as the drink - blood work must be done exactly 1 hour after finishing jelly beans, nothing to eat or drink after you eat them. I thought some people would like to know if you did not want to try the drink or were looking for other options :)  SPEAK with your doctor first!

edit: note this is for the 1 hour test. not sure if it's available for three hour as a possible alternative.

Re: glucose test alternative

  • Jelly beans sound much better then flat warm orange soda.

Didn't we have a thread on jelly beans a while back, who knew we were preparing for the glucose test :)

  • My midwife gave me the option of 16 oz of orange juice instead. I'm going with the glucola, the heartburn would be awful from that much juice and nothing to eat after!
  • Nice to hear there are other alternatives! And @Squirtgun - man would I love to have donuts instead! haha :)
  • My hospital also offers jelly beans as an alternative.

I wish I had thought to ask for jelly beans.  I really really want jelly beans.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I got sent home with the orange glucola for my next appt wish I was offered doughnuts! I had lemon/lime last time. For the love of all things delicious just say no to that flavor I love sprite and couldn't drink it for months after.
  • Well my hospital said they had no alternative except taking my glucose 4 times a day for two weeks... Lucky you !
Even though I may have say no to the jelly beans too lol
  • Who wouldn't love a donut test instead of the nasty drink test! So jealous mine is next week gonna ask and see what happens!

My hospital had fruit punch glucola for my 3 hour test.. It tasted nastier then the Orange.. I would have loved to have jelly beans instead!!!! Both drinks were nasty and I was so not looking forward to drinking them but I had to.. Wish I would have asked about alternative ways to do it..

    Edit for spelling
  • My glucola was red - and tasted like sweet fruit punch. I just chugged it. It really wasn't that bad - I was horrified of the drink after reading some of the comments on this forum!
  • You know the super sugary drink you can buy at gas stations called Bug Juice?  It's in kid friendly containers.  That's what the orange drink tastes like.  Or as though someone added extra sugar to Tang.

  • I have my test tomorrow and I am going with the clear lemon/lime flavor. They gave me a bottle of orange first, but I get migraines from red dye so I asked if they had anything clear. I am not looking forward to the drink...at all. Hopefully it won't be that bad.

    We're having twins

Our angel baby boy is looking over his twin sister - due November 21

  • Sitting in the office waiting for the one hour mark right now. This is s blast
  • Just finished the 3hour since I failed the 1hour last week! It wasn't too bad except the drink is the same size with double the sugar, and if you can get it cold it's way more tolerable! The only part that sucks is after the second draw the last 2 blood draws HURT.

  • Man, jelly beans or donuts would have been awesome!

Tbh, the orange Glucola wasn't bad. It was cold, and I just chugged it down. Just tasted like flat orange soda. It didn't make me feel sick or anything.

  • My doctor allowed me to do a fasting glucose test. No food or liquids for 8 hours, take blood, eat a normal meal, repeat blood work one hour after meal was finished. The artificial coloring and preservatives in glucola worried me. Why would the medical world encourage exposing our babies to that crap?
  • Thanks for the heads up, I'm also coeliac and didn't know that ;)

It's 1 time. Maybe 2. It's not a big deal. Your baby is exposed to a lot worse.
The ingredients are no worse than what is in a can of coke, breakfast cereal, processed meats, pretty much anything. Unless you eat ALL organic and shop exclusively for that, I am sure some of those chemicals have been on your body before. Wear makeup on your skin? Chemicals. Nail polish? Chemicals. Sunscreen? Chemicals. You can't avoid everything, and one time won't hurt, especially a test for the safety and well being of your baby
If I can avoid, I will. Personal preference - if there are safe alternatives, I'm all for it.
  • Currently waiting for my one hour mark to be over for blood work. The drink I had was red and honestly not as bad as I had imagined. What I would compare it to is Hawaiin Punch (which I hate) with extra sweetness. It was really cold, so it bothered my throat a bit to chug it but I toughed it out and drank it all in about 2-3 gulps. Tmi, but I'm burping the flavor and that's probably the worst part lol.

I don't drink soda. I've been a vegetarian for 22 years. I buy skin products that are all natural. These are my personal choices but I also don't expect companies that sell soda and processed meats to be thinking about my unborn child. I do, however, hold the medical community to a higher standard. There is not one single medical reason justifying artificial coloring in that drink - especially if it's a test "for the safety and wellbeing of your baby!"

Do you breathe air at all?

Considering we are all exposed to toxins in the air, I try to limit the toxins I put in my body. Again, personal choice. I'm not on here to argue/debate/convince you or anyone else. The cattiness is quite comical to me. Take care.

I am glad I could be of service.  I made myself laugh too.  I would hardly call it cattiness, but whatever.

  • I refused for the same reason as kradleyellis and I wish more people would, so they would make a healthier test.
Why the hell would they put coloring and flavoring to make it look like an orange soda, everybody says it is disgusting and makes a lot of them sick anyway.

Drinking sodas is also as stupid as smoking cigarettes to me. If the test was smoking a cigarette, I know that one won't kill me, but I would ask for an alternative anyway.

  • I also refused this test. I don't think I should have to take a test I show no symptoms for. I pay attention to my sugar intake everyday being pregnant. What I eat paves the way for my baby's future food choices.
