Baby Names

Boy name help. Aka: is this a real/horrible name?

We are struggling to come up with a second boys name for our son due in Oct. Our first son is Pierce and we really like similar names. One syllable, strong, masculine and not very common. So far one of us has vetoed pretty much every name. The only one we both kind of like is "Mills" but I'm not sure this is even a real name. Middle name would be something much more traditional and common. Is this name horrible/not a real name? Any other suggestions? TIA!

  • A boy in my daughter's daycare is named Mills.. he's probably two years old. It struck me as odd at first, but I guess it's grown on me.  I think it's cute, though I don't know if it's a "real" name.

  • Just an observation here.. A lot of people might not pick up on this, but both Pierce and Mills are last names of NBA players (Paul Pierce, Patty Mills). That was my first association.
  • Mills is indeed terrible.

    Miles is good.

Mills is a thumbs down. Sounds like a nn based on a surname.

Eta: the character on Chicago Fire, that's why it sounded familiar. Still a no.
  • Mills is awful

    Dean
    Kurt

    Troy
    Max

  • I went to college with Patty Mills! That's what I would think of. I have friends who have dogs named Mills and Curry. That's my two cents. It's odd but it's not terrible.
  • I also don't like Mills.

Not sure if it's the kind of name you're looking for, but I like the name Jude. It sounds masculine to me and isn't very common.
  • Mills is not a name (maybe a last name but definitely not a first name). Made me think of Peter Mills from Chicago Fire.

    Suggestions to go with Pierce

  • I like Miles and Dean and think they go well.
Mills sounds like it's not quite in the same league at Pierce.
  • Not to rain on your parade, because it seems like you came into this conversation with a pretty open mind, but Mills is not a name. Miles, on the other hand, is super cute, and I think it's got the potential to grow with him and be an adult name as well. But Mills is A) a last name, and B) a dining hall where I went to college. @LNic5 has some pretty good alternate suggestions I'd consider.

  • I don't hate Mills but I think Miles would be a better alternative that more people would be familiar with and know how to spell.

OP's have given other great suggestions if you don't like Miles.

  • What about Nils? Its not my personal style but if you like the sound of Mills, most people will pronounce Nils the same way (just with an N). It's not really the "correct" pronunciation, but for people outside of Scandinavian countries, that's how they'll usually see it.
  • First thing I thought was it sounding like a last name. But my sons name is also a very common last name as well. I'm not crazy about it honestly. I do like Pierce. Boy names was so much harder to agree on with my husband.
  • Mills was my grandmother's maiden name. Not too bad. But how about Miles or Miller?
  • Agree with PPs, Mills is not a name. Love the suggestion of Miles.

  • The first thing I thought of, was General Mills.

  • It's a last name.  Lots of people these days think it's cool to use last names as first names, especially for boys.  If you're okay with that trend, then Mills isn't too bad.

If you don't feel comfortable jumping on the "last name as first name" bandwagon, then keep looking.  Miles is a similar name that's a good alternative.

  • Mills is cute but it isn't as strong a sound as Pierce. If you want a strong manly sharp sound stick with something that has a sharp blunt end: Grant, Trent, Onnix... soft sounding names are like this: Hugh, Louis etc.

    No to mills.

    Dean. Bruce. Colt. Quinn. Rhett.
  • Mills is a thumbs down. Sounds like a nn based on a surname.

Eta: the character on Chicago Fire, that's why it sounded familiar. Still a no.

But on Chicago Fire it's his last name.
  • I agree that Mills is lacking as a first name. It also does not sound as strong as Pierce. I see several nice suggestions. I think Dean, Trent, and Brooks sound great in a sub set with Pierce.

  • Mills doesn't sound nice at all to me, but Miles might be a nice option.

    Right....
  • I went to high school with a Mills. That said I don't particularly like it. I agree that Miles would be a better choice.
