i am currently 15 weeks 3 days pregnant and taking metformin for PCOS and insulin resistance. I've read that a lot of doctors recommending to stop taking the medication at 12 weeks but my pernatologist is having me continue it till At least 25 weeks. Anyone else on Metformin?

Re: PCOS and Metformin

  • I have PCOS also, without the insulin issues the past 2 years, so I am not on Metformin. A girlfriend of mine took it through her last pregnancy for the same issues relating to PCOS and she stopped taking it at 20 weeks. I think it has everything to do with the severity of your resistance so each person is probably different.

  • I'm at 14 weeks and still on it. They lowered my does but said they have no plans of taking me off of it.
  • I have PCOD and will continue to take the metformin through pregnancy.

  • I also have PCOS and was put on Metformin as part of my fertility treatments. I was taking 500mg 3x a day but as soon as I reached second tri, the OB told me to wean myself off them as I don't really need them for diabetes management. Down to 2x a day for a week then once a day for a week, then off them completely.

  • I have PCOS also.  With my first healthy pregnancy I stopped taking it at 12 wks.  But with this one my doctor said I had to continue throughout the whole pregnancy because, "it's better for the pregnancy", so the dr. says.  I'm still going to take them, but I stopped with my DD and she turned out fine.  So, why do I have to continue this pregnancy!  Plus they suck because I'm still not eating well and they're making me sick! oh well!

  • Is anyone having side effects from taking their metformin?

  • I had just restarted taking it prior to getting pregnant and wasn't keeping it down post getting pregnant so my OB said to stop taking it. I have an appt next week where I am going to ask if I should start again and if it will help at all reduce chances of GD which I had with my first.
  • i'm on it also and took it throughout my last pregnancy so I assume I will be this time too.
  • I was on it through my first trimester. I actually liked the way I felt when I was on it. Felt like my body was leveled.
