Gabriel

I am trying to talk my husband into the name Gabriel for a boy. His main concern is that he might get made fun of by kids putting an emphasis to make it sound like Gay-briel. Or that the nickname Gabe would be turned into the word gay. I understand what he means but just wanted to get some other opinions on the name/nickname. Do you think it will pose a significant problem? Thanks in advance!

Re: Gabriel

  • Gabriel is one of my all ite favorite names. LOVE
    but i hate hate gabe

i dont know what to say about teasing, but all names can be made fun of

  • Wow. No. I think your husband is very much over thinking it. I know kids can be cruel.. But I think Gabriel is fine.

  • I like to think that Gay as a pejorative will significantly decrease in our childrens generation.

Ditto. And double points for use of the word "pejorative".
  • To be honest, I really really want to love the name Gabriel, but I've had the same hesitations that your husband has. Yes kids can find a way to make fun of any name, but this one seems too easy. I'm not sure I'm as optimistic about the term gay being suddenly out use.

  • I really like the name Gabriel and the nn Gabe. I wouldn't worry about the nickname Gay. I went to school with a Gabriel and I never heard him called that.
  • I don't think that would be an issue
  • I like to think that Gay as a pejorative will significantly decrease in our childrens generation.
This. @wassuphoes knows her stuff, and I agree that the word "gay" is already in the process of losing its power. Which is wonderful. I also LOVE the name Gabriel, nn Gabe. It's on my short list too. It also has a great meaning, "Man of God. God's able-bodied one," if that's important to you.

FWIW, I had a coworker named Gabe years ago when I was waiting tables, and not once did I ever hear someone call him "Gay."

  • Love the name. Gabe is my little nephew so I'm super biased.
Had your son been born in the previous generation, I would understand your husbands trepidation. However, I am no longer hearing it as an insult except occasionally by the late teen/ early 20's crowd. Even then, it's becoming less heard among them.
I gave up the name Arthur because SO didn't want him to be called Art because it rhymes with fart. But I wasn't sold on it myself, so it wasn't a big deal. Don't give up a name you really love because of a possible nickname.
  • I love the name, it's on our short list for boys as well. I don't think it will be an issue
  • I love Gabrielbut DH had the exact same concern. We compromised and Gabriel will be this little guy's middle name.

  • My sons middle name is Gabriel. Honestly kids will make fun of anything. My name is Courtney and best believe I've had people turn that name into jokes. Even though is was so silly. It's a nice name. Don't think too deep into it.
  • Love Gabriel.  Also @wassuphoes

  • Thanks ladies! Still trying to talk him into it. I think he's making a bigger deal out of it then it will end up being.
  • My only hesitation with Gabriel is that Gabrielle (for a girl) is much more common in my area so I would hope it does not have a feminine feel.... The "gay" thing never occurred to me and I agree kids of this generation probably won't be using that to tease.
  • I had a friend in high school named Gabriel and yes, he did get lots of Gay comments. Mostly from his friends and they'd quip back and forth. It didn't appear to bother him but he was a well liked 'cool' kid. The situation could've been a lot different...yet kids make fun of other kids, it happens. Gabriel is an awesome name.

  • I love Gabriel, but DH thought it had a feminine feel, so it was out of consideration.

Honestly, if your DH isn't on board, then I'd toss it.  There are so many great names, I'm sure you can find one that you both love.
  • I had two students this past school year, one Gabriel and one Gabe. They never had any problems with other students. It also never crossed my mind as a possible issue either.

  • I LOVE the name Gabriel and nickname Gabe. I fell in love with it when i watched the Patriot with Heath Ledger.
