Breastfeeding length Shortened

My son has recently cut his feeding in half., we went from 45-1hour feedings to 12-40 minute max feedings. Mostly 15-30 minutes. He also is always mouthing, eating his hands or putting stuff in his mouth! So I never know if he is really hungry or just playing. He sleeps from 12-7 before he eats again.. I read he's suppose to start having shorter feedings because he is becoming more efficient, however I'm having a hard time coping I guess! I keep thinking something has to be wrong! He has to still be hungry. I also really miss my 5 am feeding! Anyone else have babies that have done this ? Im also super worried about my Milk supply! If this is a fluke for a few weeks.. My milk supply is going to go down and I'm scared I'm not going to have enough for him. I'm sure I'll adjust soon or he will go back to the way he was and I'll be like dang it I take this rant back.. Lol

    I worry about how much my DS eats on a daily basis. He is a FAST nurser - 5 minutes on each side at most. Sometimes he only eats on one side. He also loves to put his hands in his mouth so I never know when he's hungry. He rarely cries except for when he finished nursing (and for the life of me I don't know why he cries then!). I feed him on the clock every 3 hours during the day because otherwise I wouldn't know when he needs to eat!!

    I am reassured once a week when I weigh him (every Wednesday). He has been gaining weight like crazy. He's 12 weeks on Wednesday and so far has gained 5.5lbs since birth. It has definitely been my biggest source of comfort when I see the number on the scale go up each week. I highly recommend it just to give yourself some sense of peace.

    And yes. Between 2-3 months is usually when breastfeeding length reduces as babies become more efficient at the breast. But even though I know that, I still worry when he stops eating after 4 minutes. I sympathize with you!! You're not alone.

    Mine has been nursing for about 10m every 3hrs, then at least 7hrs of no nursing at night. My boobs always feel empty and floppy...but....she's happy, growing, and everything seems to be functioning so....nature works. I still have that nagging feeling that she's starving, but she's not.

    Sometimes I pump right after DS eats, just to see how much he ate. I know about how much my breasts can hold. When DS starting sleeping longer at night, I set an alarm so I could pump. Of course my DS started walking up again lol. Might be worth it to set an alarm for you. Worse case is you get extra to freeze.

    If babies are happy & gaining there's nothing to worry about. If you are concerned about supply dropping, add a pump session or two. Best wishes.
