Canadian Moms: Child Benefits

FTM. Just wondering if anyone has received child benefits yet? DS was born May 20th and we haven't gotten anything yet. Does anyone know how long it usually takes? And when does it come? Is there a specific day of the month for everyone or does it depend on when your child was born?

Re: Canadian Moms: Child Benefits

  • I've gotten 2 so far, June and July. They come on the 20th each month, or if that falls on a weekend it comes on the Friday.
My LO was born May 12.

  • I still haven't received anything! My daughter was born May 13th, and I applied as soon as she was born. Will they send a lump sum cheque for months missed?
  • OK, I just investigated further.
Do you have a Canada Revenue login? If I login there, it gives me the payment schedule.

Universal Child Care benefit - I believe everyone gets the same amount. I did not get a June one, but was paid double in July. So yes, I assume you will get a lump sum for missed payments,
Canada Child Tax benefit - this one is based on how much money you brought in the previous tax year. I received June and July.

Try to log into your CRA account, then click on "Benefits and Credits" along the top. You can then choose which benefit to look at more closely. It should lay it all out for you. It tells me that my August payment is in progress.
  • Thanks @ernie9!!!

Now I have to remember my login information for CRA...hopefully DH remembers haha!
  • I've also received June/July's.  I signed up for auto deposit now.  Just waiting on her birth certificate still (Ontario).
  • We got the birth certificate and SIN. So just need EI and child benefits. All the money!! Haha. Oh. And health card. Shoot. Dropped the ball on that one...
  • It's really quick to get the health card @chambersbaby2015 I remember you are from Winnipeg too? Just go down to the office at 300 Carlton they will print one off right away. I took my daughter with me in the middle of a Tuesday and was in and out of downtown in less than 15 mins

We haven't received our benefits yet either (May 28) but it's because we had some troubles with the birth certificate. Because of mommy brain :/ lol
  • Gosh! Makes me wish I was living in Canada again! I lived in Victoria, BC for a little while and loved it :)
No govt support in the states- and if you do go looking for support you are made to feel like a bum asking for handouts! So glad that at least some places are supporting mothers. The work we do is so important!

Thanks!! I didn't even think about going directly to the office. That'll be so much faster!!
  • My babe was born May 22nd and I got my first cheque last month. They pay you for the months missed all at once.

    Daisypath Anniversary tickers
  • Ah, see, it's even easier in Ontario - they give you the health card form right in the hospital to fill out before you leave, and you get a temporary one.  Then you apply for everything else online in one swoop - Benefits, Birth Certificate, SIN, Birth Registration...  EI was the only issue since my computer wasn't happy doing it at home, I did have to go into an office to do it.
  • Just went and got DS's health card. In the pouring rain. Good planning on my part.

The Ontario system makes so much sense. We filled out paperwork at the hospital but our health care never sent us a card for DS so I assumed he didn't have one yet. When I went to get it today they said they usually wait a few months to mail it in case we decide to change his name or something. I found that very odd. Oh well. We got it now!
  • My daughter was born on May 7th and I looked today online an nothing! Just a message saying they have my application! Why is there such a lag for us but not for others!?! PS I'm in BC
