Baby carrier and head rolling back when sleeping

So in all of my carriers, my 13 week old tends to fall asleep. When she does, her head rolls back and her chin lifts up and off my chest and she likes to stay in this position. Is this harmful? She is definitely visible and kissable and she has more than 2 fingers under her chin (it's way more obviously). Everytime I try to correct her so her head is not at a 200 degree angle from her chin, she wakes up and gets upset. But it just seems wrong to have her head dangle back.

We have the K'tan, a ring sling and a ergo. She screams when I put the k'tan cloth around her head, she still rolls back when I add the tail with the ring sling and her head flips back in the ergo when she sleeps. I don't know what else to do because I can't get stuff done without wearing her but then she sleeps and her head flips back. I'm afraid of causing some neck or spinal cord injury.

Here's a pic. Unfortunately it's not the most attractive pic of her but it demonstrates the problem. I try to support her with one hand whenever I can. But sometimes it's hard when cooking or typing. When I try to bring her forward so her head is back on my chest, she starts screaming. She will put her head back in this position no matter how tight I make the carriers.

  • She looks okay to me but you could always roll a baby washcloth under the top rim in the wrap for added neck support and use the infant insert with the Ergo. Also try getting the top part of the wrap as high up as possible just below the neck and tighten more by pulling out and over to get more of a snug fit.

DS does the same thing almost. If he's really leaning back I'll adjust via the ways listed above otherwise I just let him be. Since he was a premie with breathing difficulties when born he always prefers to tilt his head back opening his airways better to make breathing easier. As you mentioned it's more of the chin to chest to look for/be wreary of.
  • Can  you wait until a deep sleep to tuck the cloth around her head?  Mine screams bloody murder too in the Boba until she's right out, then I tuck her head in.  Or, can you add a little hood to the Ergo to support her head?  I'm luck that the Lillebaby I have too has lots of head support for different positions
  • Yeah I have tried everything. I guess the question is now if it's harmful to keep her in this position. The most I'm doing is walking around and cooking. It makes me nervous that her head gets bobbed back a bit while I'm walking around but she doesn't seem to mind. Every mom I have seen with a baby in a carrier doesn't seem to have my problem and just shrugs when I ask! Sigh.
  • Maybe show the pic to your pediatrician? They will probably be able to tell you if there could be any long term issues..
