  • Hahaha I loved Bernstein Bears! Good call!
  • All the Robert Munch books.
  • Not sure who wrote it, but a book called "A Fish Out of Water". Don't know why it always stuck with me, but I loved it.
  • The Eric Carle museum is pretty close to where I live, so I'm excited to take LO there for story time and all of their events when he's old enough. Does anyone else remember Maxi the Taxi Dog books? I can't wait to read to the little guy!

@ntyravgsp I tried to find a quality Berenstein Bears gif and instead stumbled across this article about the Berenstein Bears and alternate Universes... https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/berenstain-bears
  • The Giving Tree. Cats, Cats, Cats. Barenstein Bears. Frances. Winnie the Pooh (the classics, not the newer stuff).
  • The first book I remember reading was Screamy Mimi. It is no longer published but I was able to find it on eBay. It's in baby's library already.
  • Katie the Kitten was my favorite as a toddler, my Mom can still recite the whole thing! It's out of print now but DH found a mint copy a few years ago and suprised me!

Aside from that I loved the Boxcar Children and Nancy Drew.

I have an ongoing list of books I loved that I want to get for my children. One of them was Guess How Much I Love You. We gave it to ds in his Easter basket this year and I still can't make it through without tearing up.
  • Bears in the night! Its the first book I learned to read all the way through. I believe it's Berenstain Bears. As has been mentioned a few times
    1st child DOB 9/3/02

    SO and I met 6/25/06

    Married 9/2/12

Due date 1/16/16 with our twins!
  • Doctor De Soto by William Steig
  • Hilarious! I was just online searching for books last night and trying to figure out when I could raid my folks house for the good ones (they have kept sooo many things from when we were young). I've already bought the Peter rabbit collection and the dr Seuss collection but some of my absolute faves are Enid Blyton: the Enchanted wood, the folk of the faraway tree, the wishing chair and the wishing chair again. Hairy McLairy, Wombat Stew, golden books would be good too if I come across them. gosh so many!! I also want to find a beautifully illustrated 'children's bible' from my parents place... Can't wait to go searching. I love books too!! Also Can't wait to read before bed with my children. So much fun ahead!!
  • There's a good chance a lot of these are British, but they're the ones I grew up with...

    Janet and Allan Ahlberg books
Jill Murphy books (Peace at Last, Whatever Next, etc)
    Spot the Dog stories
    Mr Men books

And when they're a little older, Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, and the Harry Potter books.
  • The Little Critter books were my absolute favorite growing up. My parents kept a lot of the ones I had and gave them to me when DS was born. Now that he's almost 3, Little Critter is one of his favorites too and I always get super excited whenever he picks one as the book he wants to read before bed!

Something we have always done in my family is for the baby shower instead of a card bring a favorite children's book to help start their library.

My cousin did that! Such a great idea!
  • Another vote for the Little Critter books.  I also really liked If You Give a Moose a Muffin and the Frances books.

  • Scoot Doo mystery series were the bomb and the only way my mom could get me to read. I was part of a book club and every month they would send you a new "mystery to solve" and it came with clues and a Scooby stuffed animal, a Mystery Machine, and of course a magnifying glass that could decode special clues. It was awesome.
  • Oh, I forgot about Corduroy! I will have to try to find that one now!
  • Ah yes cordoroy!

Hmmm, if I did I don't remember it.  Agree that Corduroy is also a must-have.  The Velveteen Rabbit was just so sad. :(  Great thread @cali1710!  I'm getting so many ideas for LO's library.

  • I thought it would be good! I want to have some of the classics that myself and DH grew up with. But these posts have helped me remember many I forgot about! Same with videos. Not that Im going to stick them infront of the tv but for a movie here and there.
  • Where the Wild things are by Maurice Sendak. Also Dr. Seuss, anything Dr. Seuss.

  • Lovee dr seuss!
  • Okay guys. What was it? Berenstain or Berenstein?!!

Apparently this has been a huge debate.
  • Berenstain. I never spell it right lol
  • Robert Munsch! Paper bag princess was my favorite. He has lots of great books.
    Little Critter books too!
  • Thanks for this thread @cali1710 !!
    So many good ideas here!
  • Love this thread!  I was a voracious reader as a kid, so I have tons of books that my (saintly) mother kept all these years.  So, basically our little girl will be inheriting my whole kiddo book collection.  I am most excited for her to read everything Road Dahl when she's older, and of course, Harry Potter, but my random kid book I loved that no one else seems to have heard of is one called Mouse Tales.  It's just a little series of stories about mice living in this town but I just adored the illustrations and I hope that one is in good enough condition to pass down.

So many awesome ideas in this thread!  Gonna add some to my list that aren't in my collection!
  • I just found Dr. Suess' Oh The Places You'll Go while I was cleaning out my stuff from the soon to be nursery! My husband gave it to me when I graduated university and it's now the first item on the kids' bookshelf.
  • I loved Mercer Mayer books and books by Rosemary Wells. My current issue is the fact I teach kindergarten and so it is hard to keep from buying books. Thankfully I have a good used book store right by my house that has children's books for cheap.

    YES!!!!!
I loved this book. I can still hear my mom's voice saying "but NOOOOOO elephants"!!!!

We're these books part of a series? I had a whole bunch have and loved them. Of course I can't remember all the titles. My mom threw some away years ago when she cleaned out the basement but I got to save my favourites. I need to go see them again!

ETA: I was really mad at her for throwing away books. I don't remember if I made her take them out and give them away.
