Labor meds (Trigger warning: birth story)

hello all!
My friend gave birth yesterday at 12:44 am to a beautiful 9.25 ounce baby girl! She labored naturally for 23 hours and by then she asked for something to take the edge off. (She started to transition and began to shake a lot which made her feel like she was going crazy) so the birthing center nurses recommended her an intrathecal shot and less then 3 hours later her baby calmly entered into the world.
I'm TTC and before watching her give birth I was determined to have a nucb but now I'm more open to the possibilities of me changing my mind during labor. I want to be educated on the different drugs they offer and pros and cons of them. What did you use to take the edge off of the pain and how far into labor did you wait to get something? Thank you all!

As pp said, most of us have never been pregnant. Some of us are having a really hard time getting pregnant, so not only are we the WORST people to answer your question, it is hurtful to read about this from someone we do not know.

If you would like to join our community, lurk and read the rules. Thanks.

  • I got an epidural when the second phase of labor hit. The contractions hurt like hell and that shot felt glorious.

Once you get pg is a good time to research your options. Just remember that the end goal is a healthy baby and a healthy mom regardless of how it happens.

  • You'll find a ridiculous number of posts on this topic in other boards on TB.

FWIW, I tried to deliver DS without any pain meds. I labored for 12-15 hours before I had to have a c-section. The best laid plans....

  • You should do some research and talk to your doctor.  It is great to arm yourself with knowledge, but the dr is the one who is ultimately going to help you make those decisions.

  • Not to mention, as with fertility and pregnancy, my experiences have no baring on yours. This would be best discussed with your doctor, once you are pregnant.

  • A birthing class helped me a lot with this, because I could see it up close and decide from there. Although I had a natural labor I liked that I knew what I would chose if needed.
Plans change, things happen. I didnt even have a chance to think about my birth plan when it actually happened.

Agreed with pp that probably 50% of the people here are ftm and can't answer your question.

Previos child mentionex. Fwiw though I had an intrathecal. DD was born in Jan 2014. I had a 5 hour labor. I had stalled at 8 cm for a little over am hour. The intrathecal was suggested during the transitional stage for me. After getting it I was able to relax and progressed to a 10 in about 20 mins. I was still able to squat on the bed and feel everything, it just took the edge off and allowed me to progress a little quicker. Try not to buy the cart before the horse and be ready to be flexible.
  • PP are right.  You'll have more luck on another board. I would try the Birth Stories board.

However, FWIW, by the time I got to the hospital, I was in transition (fully dialated) and didn't get to choose.  I had a med-free birth, and it was fine.

I've never been pregnant and this is the TRYING to get pregnant board.... So I'd recommend trying the birth stories board, parenting, babies 0-3 months, or even one of the BMBs where people have given birth recently. There are quite a few boards where this Q will be more appropriate.
  • The epidural was my friend. I never considered natural, and I never would. Do your research, and figure out what's best for you. And then be open to throwing your plans out the window.

    A) Not everyone here has been through labor.

    B) I've had an unmedicated birth & a birth with an epidural. For #3 I'm probably going to get the dope.

DD was a 4-hour labor start to finish: I had no time to get the dope & didn't want it anyway. Shit was real, yo.

With DS: I waited until 9cm but the reason it ended up getting it was to allow my son to finish descending into my vagina. At the time my contractions were back to back. Yes, the pain relief was nice but the main goal was something else entirely.

    C) My only other experience was twilight sedation + epideral to give birth at 20 weeks. It was my second pregnancy & second miscarriage. Baby was born sleeping. I told them to give me all the drugs.

    D) Cart way before the horse! You'll get tons of info in third trimester and your doctor can give you tons of hard copies.

Do you think you could give us a warning if you are going to talk about someone having a child. I mean it's bad enough when its on my own facebook feed and it's a friend of mine. I don't come onto the TTGP board and expect to read random posts about other people's friends successfully procreating. Thanks for reminding me that I don't have one of my own.

Also I wouldn't be able to help you as I have never been in labour.

I'm sorry, but I think it's a little naïve to come to a TTC board and NOT expect to hear people talking about pregnancy, kids, success stories.

  • I've been there.  I just think it's a little unrealistic to censor the board in this manner.

I'm not getting self-righteous, I just wonder what you're expecting to read about when you're on a TTC board that is open to the entire internet?

ETA: I also don't understand the whole "we are trying to get pregnant, please don't ask us about being pregnant, if we were pregnant or had birth stories then we would be on another board" thing... Are we not supposed to post here if we're TFAS?

  • Oh dear lord.
My apologies to everyone I personally offended.
I'm going to stick to babycenter forums I think they are a little more open minded/friendlier to newbies.
Have fun and good luck to all.
  • What? Since when does TTGP need trigger warnings? This isn't the infertility board or loss board. It's for women of all ages and backgrounds trying to get pregnant. This isn't a board for only FTMs. It's not a board for butthurtedness.

The OP is not being hurtful or out of line to do research before pregnant. I think it's pretty normal to start thinking of these things and asking experienced mamas how they gave birth isn't out of line on a TTGP board.

  • Not trying to be snarky now, but if you're truly that affected by strangers on TB and FB mentioning pregnancy, then it may be time for a social media break.

This is coming from someone who tried 3 years to get pregnant, did all the fertility things including IVF and FET. You need to take care of yourself emotionally and if you're finding yourself being hurt by posts on TB then it's not a healthy thing.
