Smoking Neighbors

We live in a neighborhood where the homes are fairly close to one another. Recently a new family moved in next door and it seems like they are constantly smoking (pot & cigerettes). They smoke off their upper deck and the smell is constantly wafting in to our house. The office which is becoming my 2 year olds bedroom gets the brunt of the smoke. I am so frustrated. Any suggestions on how I can handle this? I know they have every right to smoke in their own back yard (well the cigs, pot is illegal here) but it literally smells like they are smoking in my home. They seem friendly enough, they have two young kids of their own. Do I approach them? Ugh, I hate confrontation!

Re: Smoking Neighbors

  • That totally sucks. Can you get a fan to blow the smoke out?

    Or maybe an air purifier.
  • I agree with PP approaching them in a nice way. I find bringing baked goods to new neighbors really gets you started on the right foot. Then maybe mention that you have been smelling their smoke and worry about the future when that room is the baby's nursery. Maybe they'll be super understanding and make some changes, or they'll be total jerks about it, but if that's the case you probably weren't ever going to be friends with them anyway and can resort to plan B--getting fans or an air purifier.
  • I live in a town house so i share a wall with my neighbour and they were smoking inside it was seeping into my house and you could smell it in the cupboards my sister went over and talled to them they denied it even though when they opened their door it wreaked. So i talked to my landlord she talked to them and it stopped for awhile then started again a couple days ago.. I guess because its raining so now i have to close all my windows every time theyre outside smokubg pot/cigarettes and i also get to smell cigarettes in the house.. Im just going to move when my lease is up i dont have the patience to keep complaining
  • I would try the air purifier and fans first. If that doesn't work then try to get real friendly with them and then mention to them nicely that the smoke seeps into the nursery. Perhaps bringing over some cookies or brownies when you have the talk might go over better. You could ask them if they could stand at the other side of their deck.
