Traveling with baby

We are planning on taking a trip at the end of September and will be going to the beach for a week (LO will be 4 months) and need some help! For those that have traveled with your baby, do we need to check her car seat or will we be able to rent one (I'm assuming through the rental car company)? And if so, will it be one that we can take out and about (to restaurants etc.)?  Also, do most places or resorts let you rent a crib?  Sorry if these questions sound naive, but this is new to us!  Thanks for your help!  Any other advice is welcome:)

Re: Traveling with baby

  • Hello,

I have already taken my 3 month old twins across the country and we will be going to Europe in October.  Most airlines let you check a car seat and small stroller for free.  It's so handy to have your own things and you know they are safe. For Europe we bought the Kidco Peapod which is like a travel crib but packs up to the size of a dinner plate.  I would think that a resort would have  a crib for you though.

The best thing I had for my 5 hour flight was a sling.  This allowed me to have my hands free while putting luggage overhead, reading, making a bottle, etc.

In terms of making bottles (I breastfeed and supplement) our paediatrician says that bottled water is fine short term as long as it is distilled.

    Hope that helps

  • Don't rent a car seat! I did once from Hertz for my older son. It was so disgusting and looked old and unsafe. It was horrible. Bring yours if you can and practice installing it without the base. That way you won't be fighting with it later.

  • @DrD30 where are you going in Europe? We are traveling to Italy in December. I'm a little nervous about the trip- it will be me, alone, with my 8yr old and LO will be 7 months.
I plan on checking my stroller and car seat for sure. Also, in my experience hotels and resorts always have a crib or a pack n play. And baby wearing is key!
  • It'll make you feel better to check directly with the hotel and airline, but most hotels provide a crib free of charge and airlines will let you gate-check a stroller and car seat. I think babies are easy to travel with because they're so entertained just looking around they don't cause many problems. Our gal was great through a 9 hr flight this month- had a baby carrier but didn't use it, she just wanted to nap in my lap and look at a book every now and then.
I was glad I did have my own car seat instead of using a rental because I think I'd worry about how new it is and if it's the right weight group for the baby, etc. But in short, it can be done, and
  • Oops it cut off the end-- it can be done and is worth it to take a vacation with your babe! Don't stress, people are very accommodating of those traveling with infants.

Italy sounds great, I've always wanted to go!  We are doing France and Ireland.  France for fun and Ireland to visit family.
  • It is not recommended by car seat techs to use a rental car seat as you don't know the history of the car seat. The seat could have been in an accident or expired for all you know. I plan on traveling and will 100% be checking my car seat. I also saved the box it came in for easy packaging so it doesn't get bumped or damaged under the plane as they toss everything around like a game of basketball.
