Anyone have a nanny?

I'm going back to work in a few weeks when LO will be three months old. I'm fortunate that I work from home and will have 15 hours of "flex time" each week. STILL. I'm so heartbroken about returning.

We've hired a nanny part time to come to our home 5 hours a day while I work, and she seems great. Still, I just hate the thought of anyone else playing with LO, changing her diaper, etc. I plan to still change a diaper or two when nanny is here, and I will still nurse her during the day if possible. I'm thinking these things will help, but it's still another woman caring for her... After the nanny left from our play interview the other day, my baby smelled like her for hours. I couldn't help but cry and long for HER BABY SMELL, not another woman's.

I think it comes down to (in addition to other things) fear that my daughter will form mother attachments to her nanny... And that I want to be the one to care for my daughter (as I think most of us do!).

I know I have a great arrangement (I know, I know!), but I would like to hear from others how their nanny arrangement worked or didn't work.

  • Hi- I have a nanny who comes every day for 8 hours while I go to work. She's been coming for 3 weeks and it's going really well. My 3 month old DS adores her and I couldn't be happier. We still have our special time from 5-8 am and then from 6-8 at night. The little ones have no doubt who their mother is and I'm still clearly his favorite!

  • I had a nanny with my first and I know it's hard but as long as you trust the person and feel good about leaving your LO with them trust me it will get easier. Think of it as a partnership in caring for your LO and work as a team. You'll have so much peace of mind knowing you have one person focused on your child. Hope that helps!!
  • We have a nanny 2 days a week. Our hours just don't work with a daycare. I loved that my older son got 1 to 1 attention. Now he will be starting nursery school again soon my second son will have undivided attention for half the day. Catherine helped with setting up a schedule and play dates. She has become part of our family and both of our sons adore her. Just don't be surprised later if your child behaves better for her than you lol I left a flip camera for her to record things that I may of otherwised missed.

If anybody doesn't mind answering this, how much do you pay your nanny per hour? We are looking into getting one but we need them 40 hours per week
  • It all depends on where you live. For my area in Brooklyn the average for one child is $16 and two kids is $20.

  • I have a live housekeeper who is supposed to watch DD when i'm back to work so far she never fed or changed DD she plays with her during car rides and watches her if she's asleep and i need to do something. She's a really sweet and kind woman who obviously loves DD but i just can't imagine her changing DD's diaper luckily my MIL will be there most of the time so hopefully she'll be doing everything but even then i also worry about DD loving either of them more, or me missing a milestone..

I think it'll get easier with time, stay strong.
