22 wks, Dr said 17lb weight gain too much?

At my 22 week check up, i weighed in at 136 pounds, up 17 from my starting weight of 119 pounds. (7 in a month) When my doctor saw this, he scolded me pretty bad and said that I was gaining too much weight and to slow down with it. I'm 5'2" so it might seem like a lot, but I was pretty upset. Am I being dramatic or is he kind of right?

  • 17 lbs at 22 weeks is a little high, but it's the 7 lbs in a month that were probably the most conerning. If you put on 7 lbs each of the next four months, that's over 45 lbs for the whole pregnancy. That is not healthy for Mommy or Baby. Were you eating excessively for that month? I'm 23 weeks and up 5 lbs right now, but have been going up nearly a lb a week since starting my progesterone shots.

  • 17 at 22 is not that high at all. Some women gain in the beginning some at the end. I'm 23 weeks and have gained 13 pounds. My doctor doesn't seem concerned at all. With my daughter I didn't gain anything till the end. As long as you're eating some what healthy you should be okay. Recommended weight gain for someone like you is 20-30 pounds (says my doctor)
  • And honestly if my doctor scolded me for my weight gain I would be pretty pissed at him, we're already hormonal and vulnerable. That's just rude. There's other ways around telling someone to slow down.
  • I was told to watch my weight when at 18 weeks 6 days I was up 15 lbs. Granted I had only put on 4 lbs in the month before. I think the thing that upset me the most was the "scolding." I'm up about 17 total now at 21, eating right and exercising with walking and weights. I know I'm doing the right things. So I really get how you're feeling.

All you can do is eat healthy and exercise when you can. You'll be fine!
  • I would be pissed. I'm not sure what he means by "slow down" with the weight gain. Your growing a child? I hope he didn't actually say that to you. That's a really sensitive subject to be that harsh about and the last things he wants is for you not to eat because of harsh words.

7lbs in a month is a little high but have you been stressed? Eating more then usual? Exercising less then usual because of this pregnancy? There's a lot of factors to this I hope he actually discussed.
  • I've gained about 17lbs and I'm 21weeks and my dr didnt say anything...
  • That doesn't seem too bad, but it doesn't seem good, either. At least you're not like me, and went from 113 pounds, to 107 pounds in 2 weeks! I had the flu this past week. And 2 weeks before that, a severe sinus infection. Both making me throw up. :| But my OB told me that there was NOTHING to worry about in my weight loss, thankfully! Due to my other issues I have with my knees and ankles. He doesn't really want me to get too heavy/gain too much weight. But the baby is suoer healthy! Even better!

I'm 23+5 weeks pregnant and I've gained 15 pounds now I weigh 137 my doctor hasn't said anything yet , but like I tell everyone else I feel like I'm not gaining weight A lot compare to the girls on YouTube I watch a lot of YouTube. And compare to them I feel I need to gain more I don't know though but if my doctor isn't concern than I shouldn't be either.
  • At last months appointment, he seemed like he was hinting about saying something to me, but thought better of it. This time he actually did and really honesty scolded me like a child. Im not eating McDonalds 4 times a week, I am just honestly hungry! But @breezypip you're right, he is just looking out for me and it is his job. It just stung and I really didn't think it was that bad.
  • I gained a lot with my first pregnancy. I watched my calorie intake and did everything right but still gained. My OB never said a thing so I decided not to worry about it until my endocrinologist asked. He never said a word about it after hearing the OB wasn't concerned.

After that I went back and asked my OB. She said she felt like some women don't fit in their preferred normal weight gain. Some will gain less and some will gain more. I had gained the weight with healthy foods ( the biggest change was I was eating meat where I hadn't for two years before) and wasn't developing any complications to indicate a need for diet change such as GD.

She also talked about what others have mentioned, she'd rather the eating and gaining and knowing baby was getting enough than worrying about there being enough.

I would've been pissed with the doc as well for lecturing me. I'm upset enough with my mom being so relieved I'm not gaining weight, even with both my OB and WIC voicing concern about it. Weight is a sensitive subject for so many people.
  • You are not that far out of the range. I am a few pounds over the midwife recommended 10lbs by 20 weeks. When I asked her if it was a concern she looked at me like I was crazy and told me they were only guidelines. If you are eating healthy and excercising I wouldn't worry too much about your OB. And I am sure he could have found a more professional way to share his concerns than scolding you like a kid. Rude.
  • I've gained 23 pounds and I'm at 23.4. It is what it is. I can't stress anymore cause I'm doing the best I can with eating and excercise. If your doing your best then just forget about it.
  • I'm with some of the PP's, it's terrible to hear but sometimes doctors feel like they must be blunt because a lot of people ignore orders. Although he probably could have used more tact. Dr probably doesn't want you to develop GD. I wouldn't be concerned about the weight gain per se, just that 7 lbs in a month is fairly high, but if you're making healthy choices then maybe baby had a growth spurt. Not everyone gains evenly. May you continue to have a healthy pregnancy.

  • It's not ideal to gain that much so soon, especially when you look at how small the baby actually is right now and how much bigger they will get. I don't think he's trying to put you down but it's his job to help guide you to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby. I've gained 5lbs and I'm 23wks tomorrow but this is also my third and I'm not at small as I was with my last 2 pregnancies.
  • I had gained 17 lbs by 21 weeks. I wasn't worried and my midwife didn't say anything. If we stick to one pound a week for the rest of the weeks (which is what is recommended), then we are only about 36 pounds total weight gain which I would be happy with since the reccomended weight gain is 25-35 lbs!
  • I'm up 16 pounds at 20 weeks and my doctor didn't say anything yesterday. Remember they recommend 25-35 for the whole pregnancy, so you still have 18 more that you could gain and be healthy! I know it is hard, I've always watched my weight and it is hard to see my weight most mornings keep ticking up!

  • Dr being a little dramatic here, esp if you are small to begin with, not unusual to gain 30 lbs.
  • Thanks ladies, you made me feel a lot better!
