STM+ who have had big babies

so we had an ultrasound done on baby girl a few days ago and the tech said she was measuring at around 5lbs already! I am currently 32w2d. I know ultrasounds can be +/- a few pounds but I'm nervous for a few reasons. Her head is measuring in the 97th percentile as well. I have a feeling she is going to be big like her daddy. He was 10lbs when he was born and has a big head! I also have GD which doesn't help matters. I'm aprehensive about being induced (and don't want a c-section!) but I'm hoping my OB will let me go full term. My wonderings for you STM+ is whether you were able to deliver a big baby vaginally and/or med free and what your experience was. I'm hoping to go without meds but I'm nervous about tearing or the baby not being able to come out! (This happened with my MIL when she was having MH and ended up having a c-section).

Hopefully the ultrasound is wrong and she comes out a peanut like me but I'm preparing myself for the inevitable now!

  • My son was 8.5 pounds and he was 6 weeks early. He was a huge baby. Went into labor on my own, labored 10 -12 hours, then was augmented with pitocin and had my waters broken. Labored another 10-12 hours. Delivered vaginally, pain med free with a small tear - only needed 3 stitches. You can do it!

  • My son and daughter were 8.3 & 8.2 not huge (IMO) but some people think so. I had no problems, I did get an epidural both times, but they both came after just 10-15 min of pushing and I only had 1-2 stitches both times!!! I was 9 lbs and my brother was nearly 10, my mom had us with no pain meds at all!!
  • My son was 9 lbs 14 oz and I pushed him out like a champ lol! My water broke and my contractions weren't consistent or productive so i was given pitocin. I was prepared to go med-free but stupid nurse kept upping my dosage without permission so the contractions made me uncomfortable and unable to sleep. I got an epidural and still felt contractions but without the pain. I pushed for maybe 30 minutes and I had a 2nd degree tear, but I didn't know until they told me.

Recovery was uneventful and the fact that I signed up to do this again proves the experience wasn't traumatizing lol
  • @ajhellmuth - not huge, i just was saying my son was totally huge for his gestation. He was a 34 weeker. We were expecting a 4 - 4.5 pounder. Hahaha
  • @SarahAnne1101 were your dates wrong or was he considered a preemie? That's a good size for that time!
  • I'm a FTM, but I have a friend who has had 4 babies, all naturally without induction and without pain meds. They ranged from 8-10lbs! She only had tearing with the last one, the biggest, who was almost 11 pounds.

According to my friend, tearing has more to do with the angle of the baby and the way that you push than with the size alone. Pushing slowly allows for the tissues to stretch.
  • My son was 9lb 11oz and was 23 3/4". He was a pretty good sized baby!

I was able to deliver vaginally and it was pretty uneventful. I had one small tear that required 1 stitch. Recovery was pretty smooth and I had no issues!
  • My son was 9lbs 3oz and I pushed him out with no complications. I didn't receive pitocin since I was contracting steadily and making good progress but I did have an epidural which was turned off once pushing started so I felt some pain but probably not as bad if I'd gone without one. I had a 1st degree tear so not too bad.

They are anticipating this baby is also big as I'm measuring a couple weeks ahead. I'll have an ultrasound next week to confirm but either way I do not want to be induced and hope to avoid pitocin
  • These stories are definitely making me feel a lot better! As a side note today the husband and I went to a nearby store to test out some strollers and he put on the ergo 360 and they had a "test baby" that was about 9 lbs and man it felt heavy! Haha but while I hope baby girl won't be huge in glad there are a lot of mommas out there that have pushed out big babies with no problems!

Yep. My itty bitty friend has only had 9 lb + babies and all but one came out easily at home. Her first was an old school, flat on the back, holding her legs near her head, purple pushing baby and she said that was the only tear and she pushed forever.

  • My first was 9 lbs 7 oz, 23 inches long with a head of 39.5 cms ! He got stuck and he ended up having his collar bone broke, and nerve damage up the left side of him... Other that that it wasn't super hard and my dr guessed he would he only 7.5-8 lbs and no bigger. I'm seeing a specialist this time around, and my dr is considering inducing me early or wanting to section me to avoid complications.
  • Baby was 9 lb 1 Oz and 9 days late. I attempted to go med free but at 20 hours in, my water still hadn't broke. I'd been at 9.5 cm for 3 hours and I opted to get the epi before they broke my water because I was so tired. I did have a second degree tear but it was not a huge deal to me. I'm thinking those new baby hormones just had me in a fog oblivious to much of my recovery lol
