Recently diagnosed with GD and I'm struggling to find the right balance between protein, carbs and fats. What do your meals look like? They just started me on Glyburide as my fasting numbers remained high even after trying different snacks etc..
I was told 1/4 plate carbs, 1/4 plate protein, 1/2 plate veges, which I try and stick to.
Interestingly if I eat fruit with a meal then it spikes my blood sugar levels, but I can eat it fine as a snack in between meals. I do think a lot of GD is trial and error, and finding out what works for your body.
When you talk about finding a balance, do you mean in terms of your blood sugars or feeling hungry or something else?
Tonight my dinner was a small tin of tuna, a boiled egg, two pieces of grainy bread toasted, a heap of salad and a glass of milk. My dietician wants me to eat 3 carb servings to be yoghurt or milk to provide for calcium needs.
Other nights I've had grilled steak, mashed sweet potato and steamed veges. or wholegrain pasta with chicken and mixed veges.
But I was only diagnosed last week, and am finding what works for me.
@KateLouise - I'm struggling with my fasting blood sugars. I've also followed exactly what the doctor gave me and have had blood sugars out of range. I have an appt. tonight so i will definitely speak with her about this too.
I have been diagnosed since 16 weeks. At first I was eating only a spoon full of carb and the rest was meat and veggies. Now I can only eat meat and veggies. I am also on two types of insulin because my body has become resistant. I was also struggling with fasting blood sugars and I was on glyuberide and it wasn't working so they put me on insulin. I drink so much water that I'm tired of it but since I can't drink juice, I am trying Gerber's Fruit Splashers that the babies drink. It only has 8 grams of carb in it. I wish I would have not forgotten about the Fruit Splashers through out my pregnancy.
The zucchini noodles are good as a pasta replacement that will add a nice flavor to your dish and won't spike your blood sugar. Very versatile!
The lasagna heats up well for leftovers too. (I will even go so far as to say its better the next day.) The family wants me to make it once a week now!
Also the pizza crust is amazing! You can make about four personal sized pizzas with one head of cauliflower.
I am a diabetic pre pregnancy. I eat any and all within moderation. For example, I know that eating pasta has a tendency to raise my blood sugars if/when I eat it. So if I eat that, I limit myself to 1/4 cup or less, which is pretty much 2 carbs. The other half of my plate is veggies. Since I have the pasta, that is my carbs for the meal. No bread or other carb side if that makes sense. You can eat the same foods and/or foods that you enjoy but based on how many carbs will determine what else you'll be able to have on your plate. Like another poster mentioned, you just have to find what works for your body. Also keep in mind that your sugars are going to fluctuate, especially the more pregnant you get. I know some weeks, I was good and then the following week, my sugar levels would go up and we would adjust my insulin accordingly. Sometimes it may have not anything to do with food.
